I kept quiet as Aunt K finally finished her story, the mood suddenly shifting.

"I had so much to tell her, so much to show her, so, so much... but now." Her words died down as her head fell.

"Don’t worry."

"Hm?" She looked at me.

"Don’t worry." I repeated firmly, "they’ll pay, they all will, that’s a promise."

A beat passed and then, "heh! You really are your father’s son aren’t you?" She smiled.

"I guess I am." I smiled back.

"Now, tell me about this abyss."

"Oh, that? Well, I still don’t understand it fully myself, in fact, nobody does, it’s an endless realm filled with an innumerable number of creatures we call infernals, but what stands out most about the abyss, is that it connects to multiple other worlds as I’ve seen people, beings that look nothing like the ones on terra in there."

My eyes widened, "are you serious?"

"Of course. Although for some reason it’s impossible to cross worlds through the abyss, but interacting with others in there is always possible." 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

"Wow! That sounds like somewhere I’ll love to see."

"What about the abyss sounds like that? It’s a place of hellish madness with no day and no night, the skies are always red, and the creatures that roam the abyss, the Infernals, are unlike anything you’ve ever faced."

"But you just said..."

"I said you can meet beings from other worlds there, I never said it’s a cozy gathering spot, the abyss is place filled with death, madness, and despair, nothing else."

"So why would you willingly go to such a place?" I asked, confused.

"I had nothing else to do anyway, I couldn’t go back to nightingale since that’d be a shitshow, and old Tian was droning on about tasting an infernal dragon, so I just decided, why not?"

"After all, it was either the abyss or the core region of the land of the damned, and I had no intentions of dealing with those freaks at that time."

Hearing that name, I paused, "land of the damned? You’ve been there too?"

"Hmm? Of course I have, it’s the second most dangerous place on terra, why wouldn’t I go there?"

"Second most dangerous? Why? Isn’t the biggest threat there those hulking abominations? They didn’t seem that threatening."

"Ahh... yes, I forgot. I didn’t attend the academy myself so I missed these things, but according to the others, you guys were sent there on some excursions huh?" She asked.

"Yea, to inner region."

"Inner region? How many Unique Abominations did you guys find in this inner region?"

"Unique abominations?"

"The ones that had eerie abilities."

"Oh those? They weren’t many, was quite the bummer actually."

"Hah! Yea right! The academy really knows how to act shit out."

"What? What do you mean?"

"What I mean is, you guys never made it to the inner region, at best, you were at the outskirts to the inner region, otherwise, a few Unique abominations wouldn’t be what you would’ve come across."

My eyes slowly widened at that revelation,

"You don’t mean..."

"That’s exactly what I mean, the true inner region of that godforsaken place is crawling with unique abominations, some with abilities that terrify even the old monsters on terra."

"But, how? Wasn’t the land of the damned created during the demon’s invasion? Because that place became too saturated with corruption and mutated?"

"Yes. That was it initially, until the place evolved and became something much nastier. In fact, the only reason I say it’s second to the abyss is because we still have some understanding at least of what to expect from the land of the damned, whereas the abyss is a total mystery, with new types of infernals being discovered everyday."

"Damn! That abyss sounds fun."

My remark was met with silence.

I looked at Dakota, "what?"

"Didn’t you just hear a word I said about how dangerous the abyss is?"

"I did, why? What happened?"

"Why are you still so excited?"

"Because it sounds fun! I mean, it sounds like a place I can go on a rampage with no consequences, hehehehehe, I’ve got a lot of things to figure out and that place sounds like the perfect training ground."

"Unbelievable..."

"What ?? You went there yourself knowing how dangerous the place was, so why is it so difficult to believe that I’m excited?"

"Because I don’t think you fully understand the horrors of the abyss, just staying alive in there is a challenge. The land of the damned had corrupted mana that well, corrupts your mana and poisons you, which is why it’s environment is deadly on its own, but the abyss? The abyss doesn’t corrupt, it eats away at everything."

"Everything?"

"Everything! Mana! Soul! Body! Anything that can be taken, the abyss takes, until only a husk remains, survival there is already a feat worthy of being proud of, let alone using it as a training ground!"

"So, a place that fights back?" A wild grin slowly surfaced.

"Now you’re speaking my language! Let’s see if the abyss is tougher or if my devouring is tougher, hahahahahahahahaha...." I laughed, suddenly very eager to test this place out.

"You’re impossible.." aunt k smiled, readjusting her position as she leaned her back on me and closed her eyes once more, not before adding, "don’t worry, I’m sure you’ll get a chance."

"Hmm?"

"I heard from raven and the others that those wanting to ascend the ranks in Aeternum are always sent to the abyss, since they need the students to be acquainted with the true threats to this world."

"True threats huh?" I muttered quietly, "and the land of the damned is such a threat because of these Unique Abominations huh?" I asked.

"Hah... HAHAHAHAHAAHA.." aunt k burst into laughter all of a sudden..

"Oh, my sweet dear Dante, if the unique abominations were the sole threat, then the land of the damned would have been raided and conquered ages ago, after all, although the abominations are powerful, there are still enough forces on terra that can wipe them out easily." She explained.

"So, if the abominations aren’t the threat, what is?"

"That, my love, would be the monsters that reside within the core region."

"And those monsters are?"

"I don’t think you’d have had the unfortunate experience of facing one, and I hope you don’t, at least until you’re ready."

She paused, weighing her words, before she continued, "the monsters within the core region, the true threats to terra, they’re known as....

Faceless Spawns."

My body shook softly as my eyes slowly widened upon hearing that name...

"Well, that was quite something, huh?" I muttered, sitting cross legged on the floor of the training room within my academy manor.

Aunt V and Aunt K had decided they’d had enough outting for one day, making their way back home, of course I’d have loved for them to stay, but the two women seemed to have other things planned, hence I could only reluctantly let them leave..

"Haaaa... now it feels like things have gotten so much bigger."

I now knew exactly where I wanted to visit next, even if only to see what’s so special about these places for even Dakota to give them such attention.

"I guess it’s finally time for that ascension exam huh?" I had more than enough academy points.

My mission to execute the executioners more than qualified me.

So all that remained was taking the actual test, and if that meant going to the abyss, then I was even more eager to apply, but first,
