Chapter 841: Atlantic City Racing Club Opens

1923, May 20th, clear skies!

On this day, Atlantic City was adorned with colorful flags and teeming with people as visitors from all over the country filled the city to the brim.

At this time, the busiest naturally were the forces responsible for public order in Atlantic City.

Eli Johnson and John Block led their teams in person, one responsible for the safety within Atlantic City, the other for the security along the route from Atlantic City to the Atlantic City Sports Stadium, which of course included the stadium itself.

Fords, Chryslers, Cadillacs, Buicks, Rolls-Royces, and other vehicles moved slowly and orderly towards the Atlantic City Sports Stadium.

Al Capone sat in a black Cadillac, watching the crowded vehicles around and the police maintaining order, couldn’t help feeling a bit emotional.

When could he himself achieve such influence in Chicago?

By now, Al Capone had indeed become the de facto number two man in the Chicago Torrio-Capone Group.

After Johnny Torrio joined the American crime syndicate alliance, using the bootleg liquor provided by Donnie, he quickly took over the entire Chicago bootleg market. However, Johnny Torrio did not attack other gangs but chose to ally with them, which also allowed him to unify the Chicago gangs in the shortest time.

At that point, Johnny Torrio felt somewhat overwhelmed, so he called Al Capone to Chicago. Initially, Al Capone was just an assistant and driver for Johnny Torrio, but as Al Capone began to show his capabilities, his prestige and power within the Torrio Organization grew tremendously. Within just two years, Al Capone had become the number two figure in the Torrio Group, which outsiders began to call the Torrio-Capone Group!

This time for Donnie’s Racing Club opening, Johnny Torrio and Al Capone both came to Atlantic City, now on their way to the Atlantic City Sports Stadium.

The opening of the Racing Club also signified the beginning of betting ticket sales, these gambling-natured tickets were bound to become one of the significant revenues for the local gangs.

“In just four short years, Donnie went from a discharged soldier to being the president of the ninth-largest financial group in the United States, it’s really a wonder how he did it!”

Sitting on the other side, Johnny Torrio spoke with a touch of emotion.

Although the bootleg business in Chicago made Johnny Torrio a true millionaire, he was very clear that his wealth came from Donnie. Without the support of Donnie’s bootleg liquor, he could not have amassed such a fortune.

But the more he understood, the more he lamented. Four years ago, Donnie wasn’t even qualified to sit at the same dining table as him.

Now, he had to look up to him!

“It’s just a bit of good luck, nothing more!” Al Capone retracted his gaze, his eyes carried a trace of disdain as he spoke, “If it weren’t for relying on Nucky’s influence in New Jersey, how could Donnie ever have connections to people in the White House? If the White House people had gone to Chicago, we could have achieved what he has now!”

Johnny Torrio reminded Al Capone disapprovingly, “This is Atlantic City, I don’t care what you think inside, when we meet Donnie later, you better keep it honest. I don’t want to offend him!”

Johnny Torrio had mixed feelings about Al Capone’s character; Al Capone was impulsive and hot-tempered, prone to physical confrontation at the slightest provocation. People in Chicago feared Al Capone but did not respect him.

This gave Johnny Torrio a headache; he was always worried that Al Capone’s temperament could bring trouble to their group.

“I know!” Al Capone sitting in the car with a flickering gaze said, “But Chicago is much larger than Atlantic City, we can catch up to Donnie sooner or later. Isn’t Donnie just thriving by handing out money to those government guys? He can bribe, we can too!”

Johnny Torrio, feeling helpless, glanced at Al Capone, knowing that the latter had not taken his words to heart.

At that moment, he even somewhat regretted bringing Al Capone to Atlantic City.

The car arrived at the Atlantic City Sports Stadium.

In the massive parking lot outside the stadium, there were already many vehicles parked, and finding a suitable parking space was very challenging.

It took several minutes for the car carrying Johnny Torrio and Al Capone to find a suitable spot.

“This is how Donnie arranged it, he should have arranged for someone to wait for us outside the stadium!”

As Al Capone got out of the car, he continued to grumble dissatisfied.

“Keep your voice down!” Johnny Torrio reminded him in resignation.

However, they did receive some preferential treatment; they didn’t enter through Gate A like ordinary visitors, but rather through the VIP entrance.

At the entrance of the passage, Johnny Torrio presented his invitation.

“Mr. Torrio, welcome, I am Dick Hoblatt, in charge of receiving the guests for this event, and my colleague Philo will take you to your box!”

In preparation for the opening of the Racing Club, Donnie specifically brought in the best chip handlers in Atlantic City for hospitality, and Dick Hoblatt had now become one of the top four leaders among Atlantic City’s chip handlers.

This status allowed him to earn hundreds of thousands of US Dollars a year, solidly placing him among the high-income earners. If Dick Hoblatt’s son grows up, he could even become a spotlight-stealing rich second-generation in other cities, the sort who wouldn’t blink at smashing a luxury car.
