Chapter 31: Dungeon boss

He spun his blade around and went for a full slash, cutting the bat in two, splattering more blood. The body of the bat fell to the ground and what remained was the crystal.

He picked up the crystal and then looked up at the goblins that were struggling for their lives, an evil smile crept up on his face as he walked towards them. He stabbed all of them and killed them.

After killing them, he turned his attention to the bat crystal.

"Absorb," he said. He felt the same surge of energy as the first time, rushing into his body at a rapid pace, and then everywhere went dark.

The musty smell of a cave reached his nose soon after. The sound of dripping liquid got into his ear, dropping down in a uniform pattern.

Split-splat.

His eyes slowly opened, immediately met with the extreme darkness, yet he could somehow still see where he was. He was inside a cave, hanging from the roof of the cave.

’Did I become the blood bat? Does this mean I would be transported for every new dungeon monster I kill?’ he wondered to himself.

He looked around the cave to get an understanding of where he was, and there he saw it, a creature curled up on the ground of the cave, in a puddle of its own purple blood.

It was the same creature he had seen in the sky destroying the goblins. It was a giant lizard with four wings, its scales as black as the night. It looked like a mythical dragon, but different as well.

He stared at the beast, wondering what could have hurt a creature of this size. Suddenly, the sounds of footsteps filled the cave, there were whispers of a language Riven didn’t know.

He turned to the entrance, but saw no one, yet their footsteps got closer. The creature on the ground seemed to hear this as well, its eyes slowly opened, revealing the crimson eyes that glowed in the darkness.

In struggle and in pain, it rose to its feet. A massive gash lay under its stomach and blood poured out endlessly, yet it forced itself to stand on all four limbs.

It stared at the entrance, watching and waiting. And after a while, some shadows came into view. Riven could not even see what they were before all the bats launched off the ceiling, including his own, all charging at these shadows with hatred.

They attacked furiously, but before he could get close to even see these shadows as well, a blast of purple light filled the cave, and all the bats were evaporated into nothing.

Where did the blast come from? The intruders or the creature? He didn’t know. All he knew was that the blast killed all the bats there.

His eyes opened inside the dungeon once more. He let out a pained sigh, as he could not wait to see who those shadows were.

’The story didn’t have this before, there was no tale of what happened to dungeon monsters, this is a major change.’

He had come to the realization that if he continued to explore the dungeon, he would unravel plots that were never part of the story, a different side of things.

But that was not worth worrying about for now. He picked the rest of the crystals and placed them in his bag. He had been on the first floor for a while now. Though he didn’t know how big the first floor was, he would love to get to the second floor soon and see what was there.

He refrained from using the rest of his crystals because he wanted to gather as much as possible and see which he would sell and which he would keep.

He continued through the cave for a while. Suddenly, he heard the sound of swords clashing. He figured this was just another team fighting up ahead, so he didn’t hurry or anything. He kept walking at a steady pace, but after a few minutes, the smell of blood crept up into his nose.

He didn’t know how it was possible, or if it was because of his blood affinity, but he could tell that human blood was spilled, and it was a lot of it—a life-threatening amount.

Curious, he sped up, running until he got to a large room in the cave. It was lit up more than the others, and inside was a party of four: a man in silver armor and a longsword, a lady mage with a staff, a male support mage, and another lady with a greatsword and full armor.

Looking at this team, you would think they were strong, but the support mage was heavily injured and bleeding out, while the second mage did all she could to heal him.

Riven was immediately thrown off by this dynamic, because why would the person that was to be at the back be the one that was suddenly injured gravely? But it all made sense when he looked at their opponent.

Standing at seven feet tall, with glowing eyes and overflowing dark mana was an orc, with puke green skin, large tusks, and a hunched back stance. Its only covering was a small cloth at its waist.

In one hand was a mace, and in the other was a blade tied to a chain—probably what was used to injure the support.

Riven stared at this monstrosity, and he knew he was in deep shit right now.

’This is a dungeon boss.’

Dungeon bosses were special creatures that spawn in the dungeon and are always too powerful for the floor they spawn in. They normally block the route to the next floor or treasures of some sort.

Meeting one unprepared was a very bad occurrence, because within the dungeon—their home—they were catastrophic-level monsters.

Riven knew he wasn’t ready for this fight. He turned around slowly to leave, but the path he used had vanished.

He immediately swallowed hard. "Oh shit."
