Evelyn and Lucia froze the moment the lone man opened his mouth to speak. Not because they cared to heed his words, but because his overwhelming presence demanded that they did.

'Mid-tier magi rank!' Evelyn thought, instinctively able to identify how powerful the human in front of them was.

At his level above either of them, it would have been easy for him to conceal his strength. Yet instead, he was hardly restraining his magical energy at all. He was laying himself bare for everyone to witness his power.

It was unsettling to have such a dangerous induvial suddenly appear before them, and even the normally calm and collected Lucia was stunned.

"Are the two of you hard of hearing? I've got some questions and having to crane my neck upwards to look at the both of you is a pain. That's why I want you to step down to the ground. Then we can have a polite conversation face to face, like civilized people." The man said flippantly.

Judging by his words and actions, Lucia figured that he had not discovered that they were not human. Had he, it was likely that he already would have attacked them.

"Our apologies. We were simply shocked to see someone walk out onto the road in front of us. We'd be more than happy to assuage any worries you might have." Lucia said, as respectfully as she could despite how obviously rude the man had been so far.

Still, he was too strong to upset by being brash and combative. Fighting him would be far from easy. It was highly likely he could take Evelyn and her companions down even if they worked together.

Following Lucia's lead, Evelyn got down from the coachman's stand.

She wanted to try and use wind magic to warn the others inside the carriage, but she feared doing so would cause more problems than it was worth. No matter how subtle her magic manipulation was, she felt that this man would notice.

Instead, she did the only thing she could without escalating the situation and carefully observed the man that had stopped them.

He was wearing long black pants that were clearly woven from the fiber of a powerful magical plant.

His torso was covered by a thin shirt of the same color as his pants, and a dark green, scaled jacket made from a powerful reptilian beast sat loosely over his shoulders.

On top of his head, resting on his slicked back red hair, was a pair of goggles that had dark purple crystalline lens in them.

From what Evelyn could tell they were some sort of powerful magic item, though she had no idea how anyone would be able to see out of them considering how thick the dark crystals were.

'He doesn't have any apparent weapons on him, and that jackets the only thing that could count as armor. There's a band on his left wrist and three rings on his right hand. I think they are all storage magic tools. No telling what he might have in them.'

Evelyn analyzed everything she could while Lucia talked to the man and attempted to get him to go away.

It was unclear what about them had seemed suspicious. Perhaps it might have simply been their higher-than-average magic abilities, or some other unimportant detail. Maybe the man was simply bored and felt like intimidating them a bit.

"I see. A group of upper ranking mercenaries and first-class citizens returning home from a completed job in the Miris Sect. Not too unusual. But there's still something about you both that strikes me as wrong." The man said after Lucia answered his questions. His eyes narrowing as he stared intently at Lucia and Evelyn.

So far, he had not been able to put his finger on the feeling he had, but his instincts were telling him that something strange was afoot.

It was only when Lucia asked if they were free to go that something seemed to click for him.

"Ah. Your magic energy doesn't feel right. It's like there are two layers. One obvious one on top, and a much subtler but stronger one layered below the first."

Realizing what had been bothering him, the man's face lit up like he had just solved a particularly difficult math problem.

Originally, he had stopped them since they were a lot stronger than anyone else that had been down this way so far. However, as he continued to observe Lucia and Evelyn, something about them had been off. Now he finally knew what it was.

"Those must be some pretty high-grade magic items you've got hiding your true ranks. Unfortunately, I'm going to need you to take them off. Lord Diomed told me not to let any of the Miris Sect's leaders get away. As much as it's been a massive pain in the ass sitting around here in the middle of nowhere, the boss' orders are absolute." The man said, shrugging his shoulders as he complained about the assignment he had been given.

It was almost as if he did not have a single care in the world. He was hardly taking things seriously

Of course, the instant that Evelyn and Lucia learned about the read-haired man's affiliation, they could not help showing a bit of fear and hostility to someone who was undoubtedly their enemy.

Lucia swiftly put a neutral mask back on, but Evelyn had a far harder time controlling her emotions. This man was definitely part of the upper echelon of the group of people she loathed the most.

The man seemed to not care about Evelyn's murderous glare and instead waved his hand, motioning them to hurry along so that he could get on with his day.

"Okay, you caught us. We were doing a bit of undercover work for the Usturg Federation and needed to conceal our true strength. But if it can let us avoid any trouble, we would be happy to clear up any misunderstand you have." Lucia said, making up a lie on the spot and continuing to act amicable.

She then held up her left arm where the disguise magic tool was located and appeared to be moving to remove it.

In that moment she shot her right arm forward and released a blindingly fast beam of light from her hand. The spell was aimed directly at the Deamhain Sect executive's heart with the intent to kill.
