Be Careful What You Wish For: A Zombie Apocalypse-Chapter 270: Understand Now?
Chapter 270: Understand Now?
It took Gideon and his men and the Scavengers who wanted to go with him five days to walk what should have only taken them an hour.
He really didn’t know how it happened or why, but every time he thought he was going in the right direction, he ended up almost on the opposite side of the Region than where he wanted to be. While the days were spent futilely walking, the nights were the worse.
Each one of his men was having the same dreams...
Blood pouring down the walls of the Blackguard Compound while Lucifer’s giggles echoed around them. Everywhere they looked, they could see the bodies of their friends and families being eaten by different Z-packs or mutated zombies.
It got to the point where most of them refused to even close their eyes to blink in fear of seeing their wife or daughter being slaughtered in front of them.
The only ones not affected were Harper and those who stood beside him. They slept the sleep of the dead, waking up every morning happy and alert. Even their backpacks had unlimited supplies in them, so they never had to go hungry.
One of Gideon’s men had tried to steal a protein bar from Harper’s bag, only for it to disintegrate in his hands the second he opened it.
It wasn’t fair, and it was driving Gideon and his men insane. They started carving symbols on their arms, chests, and legs, trying to keep the evil away from them. But no matter how much blood was shed, the dreams returned, worse than the night before.
Finally, having enough, Gideon snapped for Harper to lead them back to the compound, and within thirty minutes, they were at the front door of the gates.
"What the fuck?" grunted the guard, his eyes going wide as he took in the soldiers in front of him. "We expected you back a week ago. What happened?"
Gideon was pretty sure how he looked. The hot sun had completely burned his face, hands, and any other part of his body not covered in clothes. It was so bad that he could feel the flakes of his skin coming off his face as it tried to heal himself. The fact that they hadn’t eaten for days made them lose so much weight that their uniforms were hanging off them as their body started to consume their muscles for energy.
"I’ll explain to Raines," interrupted Harper, his eyes narrowing on Gideon as if daring him to say something. "But the captain and his men could probably use a decent meal."
"You mean, you didn’t bring back food and supplies? You know what that means... I can’t let you in," sputtered the guard, his eyes going wide as he stepped back like not bring back supplies was contagious. "Have you become one of the walking dead?"
"Hardly," sneered Harper. Pulling off his backpack, he opened it wide and showed the guard the contents. "But the world has changed a lot in the last few days, and it is important that we speak to Raines before things get worse."
Gideon shuddered, dropping his head so that he was no longer looking at Harper and the rest of his men did the same. It seemed impossible for things to have changed on a dime, but Harper wasn’t wrong.
Going against Hattie... Lucifer was the worst decision that he ever made. Now, he just had to hope that Commander Raines had the ability to go against Harper and set everything right again.
If he couldn’t do that, then there really wasn’t much hope for the human existence.
Seeing the food in the backpack and multiple other men doing the same thing, the guard swallowed the saliva forming in his mouth. It had been almost 24 hours since he last had something to eat, and those bars would get him through another 24 hours.
"You must be hungry," smiled Harper softly. Reaching into his bag, he pulled out a bar and handed it to the guard.
Gideon wanted to warn the guard that there was no point. That the bar would disappear the second he opened it, but he didn’t have the energy to waste. The guard would figure it out the hard way.
Hearing the crinkling of the wrapper being opened, Gideon looked up, only to have his mouth drop open as the guard took a giant bite of the bar. Moaning as the chocolate and caramel hit his tongue, the guard’s eyes closed in ecstasy.
"I don’t think I have ever had something so good," he murmured, quickly finishing off the rest of the bar. "Thanks."
"No problem," smiled Harper as he shot Gideon a look. Did he understand now? Everything that Harper had been given was done quietly by Lucifer; of course no one could take what she had given. Was he stupid?
If anyone wanted to survive what was coming, they were going to have to choose sides, and only one side came with the ability to survive.
"Where is the Commander?" asked Gideon, his eyes never leaving the fingers of the guard that were now covered in melted chocolate. "We desperately need to talk to him."
"He’s in his office. After you drop off your bags of supplies, you can head on in," shrugged the guard, no longer worrying about the fact that not everyone had supplies. That one bar from Harper had filled him up better than any meal he had had lately.
Harper hummed, but the moment the gate was opened, he and a large group of men walked past the building where he was supposed to leave the bags.
"Can you get word to the Commander?" whispered Gideon harshly, his eyes never leaving Harper’s back. However, the moment he spoke, Harper turned around and smirked at him as if he knew exactly what Gideon was doing.
But that was impossible. There was no way he could hear it from all the way over there... right?
"Harper has been compromised," continued Gideon quickly, like the faster he could speak, the less chance he had of Harper coming over to kill him. "He has made a deal with the Devil, and he is now the Leader of L City. Anyone who stands in his way will die."
Gideon’s eyes became bigger and bigger the more he spoke as his words started tumbling over themselves.
The guard, not knowing what to do or say, simply stepped back and turned his back on Gideon. Harper had fed him, and that was enough to earn his loyalty.
