Chapter 273: Nothing To Worry About

It took longer than it should have until we found a door. In fact, I didn’t know if it actually qualified as a door since it was the only thing standing in a pile of rubble, but I wasn’t actually going to complain.

Dante was the first to try it. Turning the knob, he pushed open the wooden barrier and stepped through. Desire, always the comedic, leaned to the side to see if he could see him going through, but when he gave me the thumbs up, I knew it was fine.

Who knew that a door didn’t need to be attached to something to still be considered a portal to another realm? You really do learn something new every day.

"It’s safe," called out Dante, the door still open. Shaking my head, Tank let us through next and I could finally breathe easy. While it might have seemed like only a day since I was last home, it also felt like forever.

"I’m putting you to bed," announced Tank as he walked over the bridge toward the door. Tink slapped his tail happily, letting me know that he was glad to have me home, and I couldn’t agree more.

"I’m good here for a while," I said softly. Hazel-Anne had pushed me past my comfort zone, and I couldn’t be more grateful for experiencing the Carnival, but now I was happy to veg at home for a while.

I was peopled out.

"Whatever you need," purred Dante as he kissed my forehead. "Unless it involves more men... then we need to have a family conversation."

The look on his face made me want to laugh. They still hadn’t gotten over me calling Harper mine, but he was. Just in a different way.

And different wasn’t always bad.

"Are you saying that you would tell me no?" I asked, cocking my head to the side as Tank came to a sudden stop. "Are you saying that you would deny me something that I really, really, really wanted?"

"No, Cher," grunted Ronan, clutching his hand to his heart like it was breaking. "We would never say non to you. You want more men? We can get you more men."

The rest of the guys were frantically nodding their heads to Ronan’s words, and I couldn’t help but laugh.

"Relax," I assured them all. "I have my hands full with you nine. There is no way I want to add anyone to anything. You’re it for me... even if I can’t..."

"Shhh," murmured Beau as he gently stroked my cheek. "You don’t have to worry about anything. Even if it takes you until the end of time to reach that level of comfort with us, we are more than happy to wait." frёewebnoѵēl.com

"You might be okay waiting," I grumbled, "that doesn’t mean that I am. I want it, I just..."

"And until you no longer ’just’, we will go on your timeline," murmured Dante as Beau stepped back. "We live to serve."

Humming softly, I could feel my cheeks heating up. These types of conversations always made me feel uncomfortable, like I was wanting something that I shouldn’t, but it was also reassuring to know that the guys were always there for me when I wanted more.

"Enough," smiled Chang Xuefeng. "Time for bed. Everything will make more sense in the morning. Until then, there is nothing you need to worry about. We are here, and we will never let you go."

"We need to find that bitch and the rest of your so-called best friends," snapped Alicia as she paced back and forth in front of Rene’s desk. "It’s been too long since we have heard from them, I know they are plotting something. There is no other reason."

"We don’t know that for sure," sighed Rene as he looked out of the window of his office. The naval base that they had first taken over when the apocalypse came had been completely transformed into one of the biggest cities left in the world.

They had over 3,500 survivors living within the newly expanded walls, and more were seeking shelter every day. Thanks to the elemental power users, there were now high concrete walls separating the city from the outside world. Guard towers were the only thing higher than the walls, ensuring that the horrors of the world were well and truly away from the survivors.

Like Alicia had said, out of sight, out of mind, and the men and women who had been here since the beginning now knew nothing outside of their lives.

That being said, there was a 20km zone around the city where there was nothing but flat land. Nothing grew there; Adam had made sure of it. Without buildings or anything obstacles, there was no place for the zombies or Scavengers to hide.

In fact, life was back to normal, or at least as normal as it could possibly be. Sophia was now the principal of the elementary school, and a high school was being built at this very moment. They had created a hospital and filled it as much as possible with doctors and healers who worked together for the betterment of the people.

Food, while not as plentiful as it was before the ’Fall’, as Adam called it, was still available to everyone. They had multiple greenhouses that grew everything hydroponically and a marketplace where people could buy trinkets and anything else that took their fancy.

In fact, things at the New Dawn Sanctuary were practically perfect in every way. There was no need to risk everything simply to fight a war they might not win.

Besides, they had already gone back to where the house had been, and there was nothing there. Not a single moat or ruin to point at where over 200 men and women had lost their lives. It was like the guys had never existed, and Rene was more than willing to not stir up shit that didn’t need to be stirred.

"Just leave it," sighed Rene, turning around and looking at the love of his life. "They probably pissed off the wrong people and died a long time ago. There’s nothing to worry about."
