Becoming a God Starts with Acting-Chapter 43: [Frog] - The Prophet’s Part (18)
Chapter 43: [Frog] - The Prophet’s Part (18)
Before Drake could erupt like a mobile volcano, Prophet swiftly pushed him aside and said, "Gon isn’t lying. He is human."
The moment he finished speaking before Drake and the others could react, the comment section in front of Silvanus exploded.
[No way, how does he even know this?!]
[This is terrifying—so this is Prophet, huh?]
[This isn’t good. At this rate, humanity is going to win soon! Ahhh, I don’t want that!]
[Look at that—someone siding with those disgusting monsters...]
[I don’t think Gon will be taken down so quickly. He’s the biggest believer in the Frog God. Even if he is human, being the monsters’ leader means he’s far from ordinary.]
[Exactly. How could there be a human in a dungeon? At best, it’s just part of the dungeon’s setup.]
The discussion was heated, but Silvanus remained calm. In truth, the comment section had never outright revealed that Gon was human. It was all a deduction he had made based on various comments and Gon’s peculiar traits.
And in the end, he was right. Gon was humanity’s sole way out—a sliver of hope the dungeon had granted them, however small. Because, as the comments had stated, whether the sacrifice ritual succeeded or not, the most incredible monster would still appear. The ritual was simply a necessary step. Even if they managed to complete it, there was no telling if they could defeat the final monster.
Prophet looked at Drake and Silas, his gaze devoid of emotion.
Silas, deep in thought, eventually nodded. "That’s right. Every clue seems to lead to this conclusion. Gon doesn’t have the same disfigured face as the others in the village."
The child who led them to the village was the same, though that child was rarely seen, making it difficult to find them even within the town. But right now, they needed a scapegoat—someone to take their place. And that person could only be Gon.
"Will this be okay?" July asked anxiously.
Hearing that, Alice couldn’t help but chuckle. "It’s just the dungeon’s setup, July. A human living among monsters has already become a monster themselves. Do you even know how many people have died at their hands?"
Based on the recent research conducted by the center, they speculated that this dungeon’s forces were constantly invading other worlds. Their continent was merely one of many that had been conquered.
Who knew how many worlds had already failed and been devoured?
"Then tomorrow, the one to be placed on the sacrificial altar will be Gon." Silas made the final decision in a solemn tone.
With everything decided, they rested. Even if they couldn’t sleep, they had to conserve their strength for the next day.
—
The following day, the sky never brightened. It remained dark and heavy, like an afternoon moments before a torrential downpour.
The weight of the sky felt like it was pressing down, ready to crush everything beneath it. Then, without warning, the rain began to pour—harsh and relentless. But this wasn’t just rain. Mixed within were thick, viscous fluids coating the entire ground.
The land, already muddy from the previous downpour that had only stopped for less than two hours, became even more of a quagmire.
And within the sticky sludge covering the earth were massive frog eggs, nearly the size of a human fist. Inside, the embryos wriggled restlessly, eager to break free from their shells.
Unlike other days, frogs echoed everywhere as if celebrating something.
Drake irritably scratched his head. "Those damn frogs croaked all night. I swear, I will pound them into mush and swallow them whole!"
Alice imagined the scene and instinctively stuck out her tongue in disgust.
At that moment, Damian’s frustrated voice suddenly rang out. "Robert has escaped!"
Austin, Alice, and July frowned upon hearing the news.
Drake waved a hand dismissively. "Forget about him. For all we know, he’s already turned into some low-level monster, happily prancing around in the rain."
—
But Robert, the man they assumed had turned into a mindless creature, was inside Gon’s house. His entire body trembled uncontrollably, his bloodshot eyes filled with madness.
His hands, shaking at his sides, refused to stop quivering. He didn’t dare look at his body—because he knew. He knew that his mottled, slimy skin must look no different from that of a grotesque monster.
"You said... you had something to trade with me?" Gon smiled at Robert, maintaining the friendly demeanor of a village chief—just as he had on the first day they arrived here.
But to Robert, that warm smile was terrifying. He stammered, "Y-Yes... as long as you let me live, I’ll tell you everything! I know... I know you’re human too! You must know how to turn back! You wouldn’t be living among these monsters without a reason! Please—I don’t want to become a monster! You have to save me!"
Gon listened with a smile. The curve of his lips stretched wide—too wide. Like an unnatural arc drawn onto his face. Looking at him like this, how could anyone say he was human?
"Alright then," Gon said. "Speak."
Hearing those words, Robert was overjoyed, too desperate to notice anything else. He blurted out, "The others—they’re plotting against you! They want to sacrifice you on the altar! You have to be careful! —just turn me back into a human, and I’ll help you escape from them!"
Even in his madness the previous night, Robert had overheard Drake and the others discussing their plans.
Of course, he had no intention of helping Gon. The moment he turned back into a human, he would run. He didn’t care where—he just had to escape this cursed village. The farther, the better.
But Robert failed to realize—his crazed, desperate eyes had already betrayed his thoughts. freewebnoveℓ.com
Gon curled his lips, and at some point, a half-meter-tall statue had appeared in his hands. Twisted and grotesque, it was neither fully human nor fully frog. The sight of it made Robert’s heart seize with fear.
But before he could say anything, Gon spoke: "Alright. Pray with sincerity, and the god will hear the plea of the wretched."
At this moment, Robert does not mind whether the statue is terrifying. He immediately shut his eyes, clasped his hands together, and began to pray.
He didn’t know that the moment he closed his eyes, Gon let go.
The statue didn’t fall. It hovered in midair.
Its crimson eyes snapped open.
Its body was still frog-like, but its neck began to swell—growing larger and larger. The grotesque, vaguely human face on its head twisted and expanded, its swollen, protruding eyes narrowing into slits. The nose had nearly disappeared, leaving only a massive, gaping mouth stretching across its head.
It parted its lips.
Thick, black-green drool dripped down, splattering onto Robert’s forehead.
Feeling the strange, slimy sensation, Robert shuddered. His breath hitched as he slowly opened his eyes—
Only to see the ghastly, pallid face of the statue looming over him.
Robert screamed. He fell backward, scrambling to escape, but the wooden walls of the hut were as solid as stone. No matter how he thrashed, no matter how he clawed, he couldn’t make a sound—other than his meaningless, choked screams.
The statue squinted, narrowing its eyes until only the thinnest slits of crimson light remained. Its twisted lips curled into a maddened grin. Then, it opened its mouth.
The last thing Robert saw—
—were rows upon rows of jagged teeth, layered endlessly within the gaping maw, stretching down into the creature’s throat—perhaps even into an abyss with no end.
"Splat!"
Robert’s headless body crashed to the ground, convulsing violently. Bright red blood spurted from the severed stump of his neck, soaking into the wooden floor.
The monster loomed closer to Gon, smiling obediently. Blood and flesh still clung to its massive jaws, fresh crimson droplets trickling down in a steady rhythm—
Drip. Drip. Drip.
Gon smiled and gently patted the monster’s head. His eyes were filled with warmth as he gazed down at Robert’s corpse.
And then, a voice, layered with countless overlapping whispers—filled with myriad emotions—like a swarm of buzzing insects, murmured:
"No matter what... humanity must perish."
He had prepared this fate for anyone who dared step into his domain.
