Chapter 104: For the First Time, She Rejected Lana’s Request
"Hell, Boss Lana, you’re so heartless! How could you say that to me in the middle of the night?" Abigail pretended to be annoyed. "Ugh! Congratulations, Boss, you have definitely succeeded in making me want to meet my man. I want to cuddle with him now..."
Abigail paused when she heard Lana scolding herself from the other end of the line.
"Oops! Sorry, girl. I didn’t mean to forget that you’re still single. I was just too upset with Kian..." Lana took a deep breath, and eventually, her light laughter could be heard, enough for Abigail to sense how happy she was.
Abigail smiled, pinching her eyebrows. Hearing how happy and passionate Lana was made her suddenly want to meet Sawyer.
She wanted to correct Lana that she was no longer single and tell her about Sawyer, but somehow she hesitated.
They might talk about it until morning if she mentioned it now, right!?
"Tsk... Tsk... Lana, are you upset or grateful to him?" Abigail asked.
"Damn, girl! You’re making me puzzled now. Ugh, well, I’m so grateful to have a man like that on my side."
"You’re so lucky, Lana. You have such a beast man who could warm your bed." Abigail silently swallowed hard as she heard her own words. She felt goosebumps at the thought of Lana and Kian passionately making love. Quickly, she shook her head to dispel those thoughts.
"Hahaha, you’re right, girl. I’m so lucky to have him. That’s one of a thousand reasons I can’t let him go, even though he’s upset me countless times. He is my treasure..."
A sour smile appeared on Abigail’s lips as she listened to Lana praise Kian. She felt strange hearing those words because, in her mind, Kian’s behavior had been off. The way he looked at her made her feel uncomfortable like a predator watching and taunting its prey.
If it were possible, she would avoid meeting him again. But how could she do that when they worked in the same place? She felt conflicted.
When Abigail wanted to end the call, Lana’s sudden request made her flinch.
"Girl, I’d like to ask if you can work a full shift tomorrow with Kian. I have a personal matter to attend to, so I won’t be able to stay at the café all day," Lana pleaded softly.
The thought of spending the entire day working with Kian sent a chill down Abigail’s spine. She didn’t mind working half a day, but an entire shift? She worried about losing control over how to handle his attitude, as she had done today.
"Lana, I’m sorry, but I can’t help you. I have a plan to meet with my co-worker from my old office, and I can’t cancel it..." Abigail said regretfully, or at least she tried to sound that way.
Although Milan had not replied to her text yet, Abigail believed that once Milan read it, she would agree to meet her for lunch tomorrow.
Abigail planned to invite Milan to work at the company she intended to build. She appreciated Milan’s sincerity and meticulous work ethic. Most importantly, they had known each other for a long time, so working with Milan would be more comfortable than recruiting new people.
"Oh, that’s okay, girl. I will ask Kian to handle it alone," Lana laughed on the other end. "Alright, girl, we need to get some sleep now. I’ll talk to you tomorrow. Bye, Abigail!"
Abigail couldn’t fall back asleep. Her sleepiness had completely faded after her conversation with Lana.
Turning off her phone, she got out of bed and headed to the kitchen, aware of how dry her throat felt after chatting with Lana.
Abigail’s mind flooded again with memories of the unpleasant incident at the café. Although she didn’t want to recall it, it just popped into her mind and was hard to ignore.
After feeling slightly better, Abigail returned to bed. She slipped under the warm, soft blanket, trying to find rest in the darkness of her room.
***
The following day, Abigail was awake when she heard the doorbell ring.
This was a rare occurrence in her house. Someone had woken her up in the early morning with the doorbell. She remembered that in the past, Brody had come early to give her the revised house contract—even though he had only knocked.
"Who could it be now? Sawyer?" Abigail wondered, but she immediately dismissed the thought. It seemed impossible that he would fly all night just to meet her; she remembered that he needed to take her mother to the hospital.
After washing her face and ensuring her appearance was decent enough to greet someone, she walked to the door.
...
Abigail was stunned as she looked at a middle-aged man in a black suit standing at her front door.
The man held a box in his hand and smiled politely at her. He appeared harmless, which made her feel at ease even though he had never seen her before.
Since moving to this rooftop, Abigail had never encountered this man around the property.
’Who is he? Is he the actual owner of this house?’ Countless questions raced through her mind as she stared at him.
Before Abigail could ask anything, the man spoke. "Good morning, Miss Snow. I apologize for waking you so early."
"It’s fine. I’m already awake," Abigail replied, not wanting to admit how he had disturbed her sleep. She worried that this man might indeed be the homeowner. "I’m sorry, sir, but who are you, and why are you here?"
"Ah, my apology if I disturbed you, Miss Snow. Also, my apology for forgetting to introduce myself first." He smiled before continuing, "My name is Paul. I am the homeowner’s butler. My master sent me here to bring you your breakfast..."
Abigail was speechless and confused. Why would the homeowner send her breakfast, and he sends it by his butler, too? It seemed too friendly and suspicious.
When Paul noticed her confusion and the hint of suspicion in her gaze, he hurriedly explained, "Miss Abigail, my master is celebrating something today. He threw a party for all the staff who work in this house, and he also instructed me to bring you breakfast to share in his happiness..."
Paul tried to explain casually, even though he felt anxious about following Master Sawyer’s instructions.
