Chapter 204: Wedding Day (8)

Abigail smiled, even though she felt like groups of butterflies were flying aerobically in her stomach. She was utterly nervous, and she had never been like this before.

She hadn’t imagined herself walking down the aisle today. Just moments ago, Sawyer told her that Grandpa Philips would walk with her instead of his father or Grandpa Nathaniel.

’Why did he do that? Why didn’t he ask Grandpa Nathaniel?’ She tried to find the answer, and it didn’t take long for her to remember something.

Abigail looked curiously into Sawyer’s eyes. "Sawyer, did the DNA test results come out? Is that why you let Grandpa Philips walk me down the aisle?" Her heart raced, eager to hear his response.

Although she had already suspected that James Philips was her grandfather, she needed solid proof to confirm her guess.

"Yes, we received the test results before I came here to meet you," Sawyer replied. He paused as he felt Abigail’s grip tighten on his hand. He smiled and continued, "Abby, James Philips is your grandfather. Biological grandfather."

He stopped speaking when he noticed tears welling up in Abigail’s eyes. She was on the verge of crying.

A few moments later, Sawyer added, "Abby, I wanted to tell you about the DNA test results later because I was afraid you would cry and mess up your makeup if I told you now."

Despite his attempt to lighten the moment, Abigail struggled to compose herself. She forced a laugh, trying to hold back her tears as she found humor in Sawyer’s words. Looking up at the ceiling, she hoped her tears wouldn’t fall and ruin the perfect eye makeup the artist had created.

After a moment, Sawyer gently tightened his grip on her hand and asked, "How are you feeling now, dear?"

Abigail turned her gaze to him and replied, "Sawyer, you said James Philips is my grandpa? I just want to confirm that my ears are not playing tricks on me."

"Mmm, the DNA test results confirmed it!" Sawyer responded.

Abigail fell silent again, but her expression conveyed a mix of fear and happiness that Sawyer couldn’t help but notice.

"Now that I know he is my biological grandpa, it’s difficult for me to express my feelings, Sawyer. I feel strange finally finding someone I have wanted to meet since childhood..." She smiled at him, though her smile didn’t reach her eyes.

Sawyer gently tapped her hand and said, "I understand how you feel. There’s no need to rush. You have plenty of time to process your emotions and don’t need to feel scared about it." He smiled reassuringly. However, his smile faded, and a frown creased his forehead when he noticed her eyes widen as she stared at him.

"How do you know I’m scared?" she asked.

"My dear Abby, I can see it in your eyes and face. What are you afraid of?" Sawyer wanted to know her worry.

Abigail was hesitant to answer, but eventually, she said, "His family—" and shrugged.

She couldn’t ignore the fact that James Philips was Serena’s grandfather, and that woman was also her soon-to-be husband’s first love. How could Serena accept her as a cousin? She could imagine Serena throwing a tantrum and making her life difficult in the future.

As if sensing her unease, Sawyer felt his heart sink. He had been worried ever since he learned that Grandpa Philips might be related to Abigail, and he feared Abigail might feel uncomfortable around the rest of the Philips family.

His worst fears were confirmed: not only did Abigail feel uncomfortable, but she was also scared of them. He silently took a deep breath, struggling to find the right words to comfort her.

Before Sawyer could speak, Abigail continued, "I worry that Grandpa’s family will hate me." She lowered her gaze, not wanting Sawyer to see her emotions as she tried to suppress her sadness.

"Abby, they won’t. Trust me and Grandpa Philips..."

Abigail lifted her head and looked Sawyer in the eyes. "I don’t mind if they hate me, but I’m so worried and scared that they will hurt my grandma. I don’t want Grandma to suffer again; she has already endured so much in her life. It’s better not to expose my relationship with Grandpa Philips to anyone else than to see my grandma—"

Her voice trailed off as James Philips’ voice echoed from the door. "Oh dear Abigail, I promise no one will hurt you or Sophie... please don’t ever think that, okay?"

Abigail turned her gaze toward James, who stood by the door. Her heart raced as she felt nervous about finally meeting him again, now that she knew this old man was actually her real grandfather. They are bound by blood.

As she saw the sincerity in his words and gaze, her worries began to fade, replaced by a sense of calm as he saw him step closer to them.

James smiled and stopped a few steps away from her. He was speechless when he saw how beautiful she looked. He felt happy and proud to finally meet his granddaughter, and soon, he would meet the woman he always loved, Sophie.

"Don’t worry about anything, dear Abigail. Today is your big day, so please just focus on your wedding and your happiness with Sawyer—"

"Yes, Abby. What Grandpa Philips said is right," Sawyer agreed with James. He smiled lovingly at her and said, "Alright, it’s time for us to go down..."

Abigail smiled, knowing that their advice made sense. She needed to set aside her worries about her newly discovered family and focus on her wedding.

However, her nervousness about walking down the aisle with her grandpa began to churn her stomach again. She tried to calm her mind and heart as she heard Sawyer ask James Philips to walk her down the aisle.

Looking at her grandpa’s shocked expression, she felt amusement. But seeing the old man cry tears of happiness for the first time made her heart swell and her eyes misty; she could genuinely feel his joy.

"Sir, we need to go now. It’s eleven—" Paul’s voice echoed from the door.
