Chapter 56: Audacity of Healer

Xion had first given the food to Noxian before calling Lady Nazia over for inspection. After filling his own plate, he made his way back to his temporary residence of four days.

It wasn’t until he was sitting on his bed, inhaling the tempting aroma, that he realized how hungry he actually was.

His stomach let out a loud growl, as though agreeing with his thoughts. It took him less than five minutes to gulp everything down.

Noxian and Rael’s food was on the lighter side, but Xion had added a touch of spice to his bowl. The familiar kick of chili brought immense satisfaction to both his stomach and tongue.

After finishing his meal, he opened the system interface, scrolling through the list of special herbs. He wanted to attempt making those blue pills Rael had been taking, but two ingredients were still missing.

The Ethereal Balm of Reprieve would not be easy to create. Such rare items were part of the higher tiers of the system, far beyond his current reach.

With a resigned sigh, he waved the glowing screen shut and turned his attention to the stack of books floating in the bought section.

About an hour later, a heavy knock on his door snapped him back to his senses. Even without hearing a voice, Xion instinctively knew it was Ray.

Allen would always knock gently, and as for Rael, well, Xion had never seen him knock at all.

Draping an overcoat over his shoulders, he set his feet on the floor. A chill seeped into his bare soles, making him shudder.

While the weather was not too cold, it certainly wasn’t warm enough to be wandering around barefoot.

Shuffling into his shoes, he opened the door, and sure enough, it was Ray.

Since the morning two days ago, when Ray had helped him taste the porridge, he had been unusually quiet.

He also had not been glaring at him as he often did, which Xion found rather nice.

With a smile, he waved, "Hi, you need something?"

Ray nodded, which Xion assumed was his way of greeting.

"His Grace is looking for you."

The words made Xion startle. "Is he alright? Is he in pain?" he asked with a frown, and before his mind could register he was already moving to the room opposite to him.

"No, His Grace has something to tell you." A rough voice explained.

"Oh," Xion’s footsteps which had risen in a haste slowed down. "As long as he is fine."

Xion watched as Ray knocked on the door, a motion that clearly indicated the required visitor had arrived.

It was only now that Xion noticed how Ray always maintained a standard knight’s posture. Straight-backed and rigid face, his expression always intimidating.

Even his knock was precise and practiced, almost as if it had been lifted straight out of one of those Victorian animes.

But then again, with kings and carriages, this world did have some resemblance to that era.

The door creaked open, and Ray motioned with his chin for Xion to step inside.

Xion complied, but mid-step, he turned to say thank you, only to see the constipated-looking Ray glaring at the... wall?

Ah, it seemed the knight had just hit his thumb on the surface.

Where was the promised intimidating knight?

Holding back his laughter, Xion walked in and the door closed behind him.

Xion did not wait for the child to speak. Instead, he moved toward the sitting area where Rael had been lounging.

His long silver hair almost concealed his entire face as he leaned over the huge piece of paper spread across the table.

"You should be resting," Xion chided as he took a seat.

Darius who had been busily staring at the map, finally looked up. He pointed to the area marked on the map, "We need to reach here as soon as possible."

Xion narrowed his eyes as he tried to read the map.

To him, it looked like snaky scribbles. Or the kind of patterns ants might make if they were dipped in ink and left to stroll across the paper.

For a moment, he really wanted to zoom the "triangle" Rael had pointed to.

"What is this place?" He relented. It was better to just ask than to waste time pretending to know.

"A royal capital."

Xion, "..." It is right in the middle of the scribbled map. What else could it be if not the royal capital?

I must be the only one too stupid not to know.

But to go there... Rael was technically a noble. There had to be something he needed to do in the royal capital. It was not his place to meddle, so he simply nodded.

"We need to leave tomorrow."

Now that caught him off guard. Were they not supposed to stay here for a week?

It had only been four days. He still hadn’t gathered enough Merit points!

How was he supposed to open the lab and start his experiments? fгeewebnovёl.com

Perhaps his doubts were clearly written on his face, because Darius took the initiative to explain.

"It’s a summon from the King. We can’t delay it."

Xion looked at Rael and could not bring himself to speak. Who knew what kind of burden this poor child had been carrying all alone?

Uzera city, the paradise of healers, was one of the best places for him to gather merit points this fast. But... would that not be useless if he could not even help Rael?

"Got it." That was all he could say.

Darius motioned to the hot tea on the table with his bony finger. "For you."

It was only after Xion picked up the cup that Darius spoke, explaining the reason for summoning him so late.

"Can you increase the dosage of the medicine-"

"No." Xion didn’t even let Rael finish his sentence. He casually took a sip, and soon came to a conclusion, he didn’t like the bland taste.

Refraining himself from showing it on his face he spoke, "Your body can’t bear it."

He had been too anxious when he first saw Rael’s condition, but after thinking about it all night, he came to a conclusion.

Rael’s body was actually faring far better than he had imagined. The constant decay and regeneration looked frightening, but Rael was not in too much pain.

The regeneration process was faster, sparing him from writhing in agony every second.

Only mana could perform such magic...

"We need to take it slow. Think of it as shaping a clay pot. The slower and more careful the process, the more beautiful the result."

Darius did not know what to say anymore. He had always been accustomed to giving orders. A single command and countless people would rush to fulfill it.

Yet here, even when he took the initiative to ask, the healer stubbornly refused to obey.

Darius discovered another facet of his healer, his audacity.

One might even call him brave.

Yes, brave. Had Xion not been brave enough to flee the Marquis’ estate? Had he not dared to strike a deal with him while casually calling him "scary" to his face?

So, Xion was either bravely audacious or audaciously brave. Though the difference it brought was almost negligible.

In the end, both would only lead to Xion’s death.

Darius shook his head. He had been far too generous, had he not?

After all, he had just spared Xion’s life once again.
