Chapter 223 - 223: Longevity and Children

Looking up, he saw Selene standing at the hatch, cautiously extending her hand, then staring blankly at the sunlight reflected on the back of it.

To Loki and Diana, Selene's behavior was strange and incomprehensible. Only Ethan understood. Selene had been turned into a vampire as a child and had lived for hundreds of years in a sunless environment, only going out at night.

For centuries, she had never felt what it was like to have sunlight touch her skin. For a pale-skinned vampire who hadn't been exposed to sunlight for hundreds of years, the sensation was novel but not pleasant. Their skin was highly sensitive and not suited for direct, prolonged sun exposure.

"In this world, you'll have plenty of time to experience sunlight. Now, let me introduce you to everyone on the ship."

Selene withdrew her hand and finally began to look at her surroundings.

Yesterday, she had already noticed that it was a wooden sailing ship. Having lived during that era, Selene was no stranger to such vessels. In fact, she was more familiar with these types of warships than most people here.

As one of the strongest warriors in the vampire clan, she had even experienced naval warfare during the age of sail. She recognized immediately that this ship was a warship.

However, many things aboard did not match her knowledge, and she couldn't figure out their functions.

"Logan, the current chief mate of the ship."

Ethan pointed to Logan, who was steering the ship. Upon hearing Ethan, Wolverine raised his hand to greet Selene.

"Diana, she's only staying for a while and will return to her own world later."

Selene looked at Diana. It was Diana who had helped her find a room last night and brought her that small bottle of blood this morning. Since they were both women, Selene felt slightly more 'familiar' with Diana.

At first, she thought this woman might be Ethan's wife or something. But now she knew that wasn't the case. Diana wasn't even a permanent crew member. She was just a guest on the ship.

"That's Loki. He came aboard not long before you."

It really had only been a short time. Ethan had brought Selene back not long after Loki arrived in this world. It might have been ten minutes or less between Loki going to rest and Ethan bringing Selene aboard. Those few minutes had only been delayed by Ethan and Diana's conversation.

"There's one more..." Ethan looked around and didn't see her, so he went up to the poop deck and asked Logan, "Where's Laura?"

At the mention of her, Logan sighed, took a deep puff of his cigar, and helplessly complained to Ethan, "When I went to wake her this morning, I found out she'd stayed up all night playing video games. She fell asleep just before you came out."

"..."

After the trip to the Marvel Universe, the happiest person wasn't Ethan or Logan, but eleven-year-old Laura. The little girl had finally experienced a relatively normal childhood. Every day, Logan took her around to experience ordinary life, and with Ethan's "financial support," she bought everything she wanted—food, toys, and more.

Both of them had returned with huge bags and boxes. Many of them were Laura's toys, some were clothes and shoes from Pepper, and there were lots of electronics from Tony. Among them was a small Arc Reactor as a power supply, so Laura could use the electronic devices Tony had given her.

Tony had won her over, and Laura had played all night on their first night back. This discovery left Logan exasperated, but like most fathers, he didn't know how to deal with the situation at all.

"Congratulations, you've finally experienced what it's like to be a father."

Ethan wasn't going to offer advice. It wasn't his child, so it wasn't his problem. If things went wrong, Logan would only blame him anyway. Why ask for trouble?

"Did she eat anything?"

"She had some milk and fruit before going to bed." It wasn't healthy to eat too much before sleeping, but skipping food altogether wasn't good either. Laura was in a growth phase, so nutrition was important. Fortunately, Logan understood this and made sure she ate something before resting.

"Then let her sleep. We're drifting at sea anyway... nothing to do."

The temporary fleet led by the Eternal would take quite a while to reach the central island. It was a long, uneventful voyage with little to see. Even Laura had grown tired of the endless sea.

"My bigger headache now is that she's at the age where she needs formal education." Logan had ignored this issue before, until he took Laura around New York. During casual conversations with strangers, someone asked where she went to school—and that's when he remembered.

"I wouldn't have thought of it unless you brought it up."

Diana, standing nearby, didn't say anything. Hearing their conversation, she could only vent in her heart with Selene beside her, "Men are so careless."

"For now, I'm not in a rush to return, and I don't have anything urgent. I can teach Laura some basic knowledge during this time."

It was the most practical solution for the moment. But Ethan still gave a reminder: "Just stick to basic subjects. Stuff like the legends of the Olympian gods can be bedtime stories."

Diana rolled her eyes at him. She already knew many things her mother had told her weren't suitable for teaching Laura. Besides, she'd only be teaching for a short period and wouldn't cover much.

When Selene heard there was an eleven-year-old girl on board, she also offered to teach some basic knowledge.

Given Selene had lived for centuries, she had more than enough experience to teach a child. As for higher-level education? No one present was concerned. After all, standing right there was a mage.

Whether in films or novels, mages were always portrayed as highly knowledgeable. After spending some time with Ethan, Logan and Diana realized he had hoarded an incredible number of books. His Book of Inheritance alone held the content of a small library.

In addition, Ethan traveled between worlds and constantly learned new knowledge. Even if Laura learned just a fraction of it, it would be enough for a lifetime.

Logan didn't want Laura to become a mage. He only hoped she could receive a normal education.

With that, Laura's education plan was settled. For now, Diana and Selene would provide some basic instruction. Later on, Ethan might take over, depending on their circumstances.

After the discussion, Diana brought out breakfast. Everyone gathered on the poop deck, enjoying the sea breeze while chatting and eating.

Loki didn't wander around the deck. He stayed there too, holding a piece of fruit and nibbling slowly.

As the prince of Asgard, Loki's etiquette was impeccable. Even when eating fruit, he looked refined. On the other hand, Ethan didn't know if it was Arthur's influence or something else, but Diana was the boldest eater among them—both in manner and in quantity.

After everyone had finished eating, Diana was still wrestling with a piece of steak, yet still found time to chat with Ethan.

"I noticed you and Laura don't seem very close. Don't you like children?"

Ethan sipped his juice, leaned against the railing, and gazed at the sky as he answered her questions.

"Not really."

In his previous life, Ethan hadn't liked spending time with children. Ironically, children always liked to get close to him. He wasn't sure if it was some strange aura, but it drove him nuts.

"Seeing you like this, I'm really curious how you'd act with your own kids someday."

Ethan hadn't imagined that scenario. He responded directly.

"In a way, children are a continuation of life. But my goal is to become immortal. Since my life will be endless, there's no need to have another life to continue it."

Ethan's goal had never changed, and he had always worked toward it. At this point, everything was going well. At the very least, his lifespan would far exceed that of an ordinary human. If he could break past his current limits, even he didn't know how long he might live.

From another angle, he didn't know what changes his body would undergo during this process. Though he firmly believed he was still human in spirit, the objective truth was unavoidable. Even without any virus or serum, once his magic reached the point where his body was saturated with energy, transformation was inevitable.

Those changes would be irreversible. Whether he could have children at that point was a complete unknown.

Diana was a little confused after hearing Ethan's answer and explanation. She had never really thought about these questions before. She just understood things based on her own knowledge. She didn't realize how different she was from most people.

Ethan was striving to become immortal, while she had been born a demigod with eternal life. According to Ethan's reasoning, she too didn't seem to care much about children.

Diana felt she couldn't relate to the discussion about being different. But when she looked around, she realized Ethan was the only one who could still be considered a normal human. Logan, Selene, and Loki—each of them had longer lifespans than the last.
