Enemies Are All Nourishment for My Fungi-Chapter 310: Heading Straight to the Baron’s Rural Estate
After more than ten minutes and perusing several books, Ye Nai gave up, unable to continue after the beginning.
The vocabulary was too obscure, every single word a baffling novelty; the text constantly used long sentences, some paragraphs appearing as three lines, but lacking any punctuation in the middle, forming a complete sentence.
The popular novels weren’t much better, equally disorienting her.
The content summaries promised popular romance, a tangle of men and women loving you, loving him, him not loving her, and her loving him again, but reading them was excruciating; the nobles’ favored popular novels had noble backgrounds, with the first chapter laying out characters, each followed by a lengthy string of names, family history, and titles.
Twenty pages in, still on the first chapter with just character introductions and no actual plot, Ye Nai immediately gave up after forgetting the beginning while reading the end.
After some rifling, she finally found the textbooks the little witch had brought back—Witch Language, Witch Patterns, Witch History, Mathematics, Astronomy, Geography, Basic Alchemy, Introduction to Witch Doctoring, Zoology, Botany, and more.
Ye Nai reclassified the textbooks by grade from the covers, then slowly flipped through the textbooks for first-grade subjects.
As she read, she put down the textbooks—the sentence structures were too complex, and she couldn’t understand many of the words.
Eventually, she turned her attention to the documents and letters gathered from the study.
The handwriting was a bit sloppy and hard to discern, but more comprehensible than the textbooks; even with some wild guesses, she managed to understand a few sentences.
Ye Nai took out a bowl of chilled Translation Mushroom salad and ate while reading; as she munched and browsed, she found reading became easier and easier, the words and grammar simpler, making her progress through the pages of documents more quickly.
When she picked up the textbooks again, she did understand more words than before, but the complex sentence structures hadn’t changed, and she still struggled to read, having to reread a descriptive long sentence several times to vaguely grasp some meaning, which wasn’t even guaranteed to be correct.
Ye Nai promptly gave up and packed the book box back into Space, no longer troubling herself and focusing solely on the handwritten documents.
Once immersed in reading, she went on for over three hours, her eyes sore from fatigue, but of course, her vocabulary had increased significantly.
The written language used in the handwritten files was very simple; the sentences were all short, with few long sentences in an entire document, which was very user-friendly for someone forcibly comprehending a foreign language with the help of Translation Mushroom; Ye Nai felt it could be promoted heavily as an experience upon her return to Blue Star.
Moreover, after reading a lot, she discovered some amusement; whether it was a Knight’s Wife or a Baroness, with the man of the house on the battlefield and the heir too young, daily management of the estate and household chores all rested on the wife’s shoulders, a veritable powerhouse of a woman. It’s a pity they never got the chance to show their mettle, becoming captives instead.
It was simply because they were only formidable in speech; in the face of Ye Nai’s absolute force, the cleverest of minds were of no use.
After tidying up, Ye Nai took out a foldable bed and placed it on the floor; she was not interested in the ladies’ beds—who knew what their hygiene habits were like. When away from home, it felt safer to use her own things.
Ye Nai had a good night’s sleep, and as the sky began turning the pale color of a fish’s belly in the early morning, she opened her eyes.
After quickly freshening up, Ye Nai performed Space Teleportation and went directly from the attic to the main road outside the city.
The farmers waiting at the city gate to enter and sell their wares were frightened into screaming when a person dressed strangely suddenly appeared.
Ye Nai got into the SUV, set up the sports camera, and drove off, leaving the foreseeable chaos of Dakler City behind her.
According to the butler last night, to go to Marabene Military Fortress normally took three to five days on horseback; Ye Nai pressed the accelerator to the floor, heading straight for the Baron’s countryside estate.
The city mansion was limited in space and storage capability; bulk supplies like grain, cloth, salt, and sugar were all stored in the barns of the estate.
With only one major road outside the city, Ye Nai drove from the early morning till noon and finally spotted the fork in the road and sign with the noble’s crest mentioned by the butler.
She turned the corner and drove for another hour, eventually arriving at the sprawling countryside estate. She did not hesitate to drive in, knocking down with spores any servants and soldiers who tried to stop her.
The estate lacked the grand iron gate of the city mansion’s front courtyard; the SUV stopped directly in front of the estate’s door, and two male servants shaking with fear came out from inside while the maid hid behind the door, not daring to show their faces.
"Respected guest, hello. You’ve come all this way, is there something important? Our masters are all in Dakler City; this is just the old house where we come back for the holidays," said one of the male servants who came out, both quite old, bowing courteously, as did the butler the day before.
"I know."
Ye Nai stepped out of the carriage and didn’t waste any words. She directly pulled the Baroness out of the Space and let her upper body lie on the hood of the car.
"Ah!"
The male servants let out a short, sharp scream, then fell silent all at once, dropping to their knees on the ground, looking up at Ye Nai with panic and bewilderment, paying their respects more devoutly over and over again.
Their tall statures were still level with Ye Nai’s line of sight even as they knelt.
Ye Nai looked at them indifferently.
"You have only lost your voices temporarily. Go and bring out everyone from the house, and don’t make me do it myself."
Two male servants hurriedly stood up, but before they could enter the front door, the maids and lower-ranked male servants came out in single file from inside, standing stiffly yet submissively on both sides.
Only then did Ye Nai restore the voices of those two male servants.
"Is everyone here?"
"Yes, Great Witch, all the servants of the manor are here. The soldiers and gardeners are outside; should we also call them back?"
"No need, just confirm for me, is that your Baroness?"
Ye Nai pointed at Lady Dakler lying on the hood of the car.
The male and female servants craned their necks to look and nodded one after another.
"Yes, she’s our Baroness."
"Good, as servants, you know the Baron is fighting in the war, right?"
"Yes, we know…"
"Oh, my God!"
"You are, you are the enemy?!"
The servants employed at a nobleman’s manor were not fools; they quickly began to catch on, especially after someone shouted out, becoming even more afraid to move.
"You are servants; I won’t kill you, but don’t get in my way, understand?"
"Understood, understood."
The male and female servants all nodded continuously, shoulders quivering like quails.
"I have heard that this manor stores a large amount of resources like grain, fabric, sugar, and salt. Is that true?"
"It’s true, the storeroom is at the back."
"Is there anything valuable in the house? Like gold and silver utensils, precious furniture, and the like?"
"No, the countryside manor only stores grain. Valuables are in the city mansion. They bring them back when they stay for a few months at the end of the year, and they take it all back again when they return to the city in the spring."
"Good, have someone take me to fetch the stored grain. Take inventory of the things inside the house. After I’ve looked over them, the rest will be yours."
"Many thanks, Great Witch, we appreciate your generosity."
