Extra's POV: My Obsessive Villainous Fiancee Is The Game's Final Boss-Chapter 245: The World Tree
The Blurred Man stared up into the sky, his eyes fixed on the remnant traces of Yggdrasil attention.
No mortal could see it but it was there.
The stench of blood. The slight change in the resonance of the world.
But what surprised him the most was the shielding. Even now, he couldn't tell where he could go to face the World Tree directly.
It was hidden so well, that it was a part of the world itself.
He chuckled to himself, marveling on how much his people's greatest mistake had grown.
It had started as a simple experiment. A map of roots that would connect their section of the Abyss to each other.
A means of communication and sharing of information. Something greater than the Akashic Records. Something more… personal.
And it worked!
They'd received everything they'd grown into Yggdrasil, and everything had been going smoothly.
Until the tree gained sentience.
Yggdrasil had wanted… more. It couldn't speak. No, not in the way a true being could. But it could desire. And it desired more than it had.
It desired a life of tyranny, not one of servitude.
And so, it escaped.
Of course, his people couldn't allow a creation of this magnitude, and with such cruel intent leave to gods knows where.
If their creation caused great havoc, it could lead the more dangerous beings of the Abyss to them. And that couldn't be allowed to happen.
And so, they'd sent a team after it.
But as they quickly came to learn, Yggdrasil was cunning. And its power was growing.
The more powerful gods of their civilization followed it. From universe to universe, it slipped away, setting traps and hiding its tracks.
And they lost it for a while. Until they discovered a universe that appeared dead. A universe that didn't leak even a single drop of energy.
An anomaly.
They investigated, and they found it. Yggdrasil.
It had entrenched itself into the world and grew Trees that bound the natives of the universe to it. And through them, it could both use and cultivate power.
It grew stronger with every variety of Tree it offered, bringing more and more people connected to it.
And when the time was right, it would harvest the world and all that lived in it, using it as fuel to ascend and become a greater being.
Yggdrasil had to be stopped. They had to destroy it before it destroyed them in turn.
And that was when they realized it. Yggdrasil had chosen well.
The universe he'd chosen was unique. It couldn't hold the gods of their civilization. Not while the World Tree was there.
Once they entered, they were within his domain. And that meant death.
And they couldn't destroy the universe. Not without doing it from the inside.
They couldn't close it off from the rest of the Abyss and seal the World Tree away forever.
Yggdrasil just had too many doors in and out of this universe. If they close one, it'll open another.
And so they decided. Instead of sending in the gods, they'll send in their best demigods.
And that was when the Three arrived in this universe.
They weren't strong enough to take on Yggdrasil. Not yet. But they had a plan.
They'll go into a deep sleep that would last centuries, and build their ascension spheres in this universe.
If they did it slowly like that, it would take time for Yggdrasil to notice them.
And when it finally did, they'll have integrated themselves into the frequency of this universe.
That meant they could safely ascend to become gods without standing out from the world so much that Yggdrasil could kill them.
If it did, it'll only hurt itself. After all, they were now a part of the universe it had tied itself to.
After ascension, they would bring up the Calamites. The Calamities would weaken the universe and at the same time, Yggdrasil.
That was when they'd kill the Tree.
The people of this world didn't matter either way. Yggdrasil would reap their souls as fuel when it was ready to emerge.
It was better to deny the World Tree that resource than to let him use it to grow stronger.
The Blurred Man sighed, his hands blurring its way out of his pockets. He'd ascended to godhood. The Forgotten had done the same.
But Lars had failed.
Now they were two.
And this was because of Yggdrasil's weapon.
The Stolen.
Yggdrasil had searched across the universes of the Abyss, and picked one that would serve as its sword, until it was ready to harvest this universe.
And the kid didn't even know.
The worst part? They couldn't come close to him.
The World Tree had built a failsafe into the mortal. Enough to make him as strong as a god.
Not enough to kill them, not yet, but enough to do damage. Damage that would make it easier for Yggdrasil to destroy them.
"He failed, didn't he?" A soft feminine voice floated to his ears.
The Blurred Man said nothing, his eyes fixed on the holy city of Edenhold in the distance.
"What do we do now?" The Forgotten asked.
If it was anyone else, they'd have Forgotten what she'd said immediately she was done, but he was a god. He was special.
"What we've always done." He answered without looking at her. He wouldn't have been able to look at her for more than a second anyways.
"Just because Lars is dead, that doesn't mean we can't continue with our work." He said, stuffing his hands back in his pockets. "We proceed with the Calamities."
"The World Tree already knows the Calamities are coming." The Forgotten observed. "It was created with unparalleled predictive systems."
"And that was why he brought the Stolen to this universe." The Blurred Man smiled to himself. "But I have another idea. Why don't we try stealing the Stolen?"
"What do you mean?" She asked.
He tilted his head in the direction her voice was coming from. "The Stolen doesn't want to die. That is why he is going after our Calamities."
He finally turned to stare at the Forgotten, meeting her gaze. "But he doesn't know the final use Yggdrasil has for this world."
Silence filled the air, a breeze blowing around the hill they were on. Edenhold still burned in the distance, even with the war over.
"Where are Lars' pets?" The Blurred Man suddenly asked.
"Nero and Contessa?"
"Yes."
"They're alive."
"Good." The Blurred Man turned away from Edenhold. "They'll be our agents. They'll help us steal the Stolen."
"Let's see how long Yggdrasil can keep its sword… once we make it ours."
And with that, he walked away.
