Fairy Tail: I Don't Want to Be the Guild Master-Chapter 150: A Small Accident
Chapter 150 - A Small Accident
Mrs. Weiss opened the door and welcomed Rhode and Elfman inside, offering them tea with practiced hospitality.
Though the house was modest and neatly kept, it gave off the impression of a family that had once been stable but had recently fallen into hardship. This assumption was quickly confirmed.
The person in need of the herb was Mr. Karut, who lay bedridden in the adjacent room, too weak to get up. As Mrs. Weiss explained, Karut had worked as a long-distance coachman, taking freight and passenger routes that earned him a decent living. His strategy had always been to take one big job and rest between trips, rather than hustling daily at the local market or transport guild.
However, he had fallen ill after returning from his most recent assignment. Their savings had already been drained in attempts to treat him, and in desperation, the family sold their carriage and horse. Despite all of this, his condition continued to deteriorate.
Only yesterday did a doctor from another town diagnose Karut with a rare pulmonary infection, likely caused by inhaling miasma during one of his journeys. The only known cure was Divotian grass, a rare herb that grew solely on the treacherous Galantos Snow Mountain.
Unfortunately, that mountain was home to a vicious beast known as the Labon. For ordinary people, venturing there was a death sentence. Their only hope now lay in the hands of mages from the guild.
"The current reward is all we have left," Mrs. Weiss admitted, her voice shaking slightly. "I know it's not enough for the danger you're facing, but..."
She bowed her head and clenched her fists tightly.
"If you would allow us, I can work to repay the rest over time. I'll do any job, as long as you accept the commission. Please..."
Rhode observed her quietly. Her face was drawn and pale, her fingers worn and cracked from housework. Her clothes had a smudge on the hem that suggested she had neither time nor strength to care for herself. Despite her exhaustion, she remained composed, her desperation muted by dignity.
Mr. Karut, it seemed, was fortunate to have such a devoted partner.
Elfman was visibly moved. He wiped at his eyes and declared, "Mrs. Weiss, you're a true man!"
Seeing her startled reaction, Rhode smiled gently. "Don't worry. That's just his way of expressing admiration."
He turned serious again. "As for the payment, we've already accepted the commission. We don't change the terms unless absolutely necessary. Our job is to retrieve the Divotian grass quickly and safely. That's what matters now, isn't it?"
Mrs. Weiss nodded, her eyes glistening.
"You can count on us," Rhode said. "We've already done the research and know what we're looking for. We won't fail."
With a confident tone, he rose to his feet. "We'll head out immediately."
"Right behind you!" Elfman shouted, full of spirit, ready to take on the mountain.
In Mrs. Weiss's eyes, one of them seemed calm and dependable, while the other radiated energy and determination. Both appeared capable and trustworthy. A sense of relief settled in her heart.
As she watched Rhodes and Elfman leave the courtyard, Weiss leaned gently against the doorframe, glancing back at her bedridden husband. Despite her exhaustion, a faint smile surfaced on her face.
As long as Karut could be cured, everything else could be endured.
She braced herself and stood upright. It was time to prepare a meal. When the mages returned, she needed to welcome them with a proper show of gratitude.
Jenny and Hunter should be returning soon as well.
"Weiss! Weiss!"
The sudden, urgent voice made her heart jolt. She stepped outside quickly to see what was going on.
Mrs. Nepol, a neighbor, came running toward her in a panic. Rhodes and Elfman halted in their tracks at the sound of someone calling their client's name.

"Weiss, something's happened!" Mrs. Nepol gasped for breath. "Someone saw Jenny climbing up the mountain alone!"
Weiss staggered, taking two steps backward until her hand found the wall for support. Her breath caught in her throat.
"Jenny... why would Jenny...?"
She didn't need anyone to explain. The answer was obvious. Her daughter must have gone off on her own, trying to help by searching for the herb to save her father.
It was reckless. It was dangerous. It was exactly what a desperate child might do.
But the news wasn't over.
"Hunter went after her!" Mrs. Nepol added, her voice rising with panic.
Weiss's legs gave way. She collapsed against the wall, sliding down to the ground in shock.
The world around her seemed to blur.
Her husband was gravely ill. Now both her children had disappeared into a treacherous mountain. Days of fatigue, grief, and stress had already worn her down, and this final blow stole the light from her eyes.
No, they weren't lost yet. There was still hope. They could still be found.
"I'll get them back." Weiss whispered, struggling to her feet. She didn't even notice the dust clinging to her skirt as she stumbled forward.
"Weiss, no! Don't go up there! You'll die!" Mrs. Nepol cried out.
Weiss didn't respond. Her mind was consumed with one thought: bring Jenny and Hunter home.
"Rhodes!" Elfman called, his fists clenched in frustration.
"I know," Rhodes replied sharply, stepping in front of Mrs. Weiss. He looked her in the eyes and said, "We'll find them."
Those were the words Mrs. Weiss had been desperate to hear. They echoed in her mind like a lifeline, and she looked at the calm young mage with a face full of sorrow and fragile hope.
"Find me two pieces of clothing they've worn. Anything that still carries their scent," Rhodes said, not wasting another second. He clutched his pendant and called out firmly, "Murk Wolf!"
In an instant, a massive two-headed shadow wolf appeared in the courtyard, flanked by two smaller wolves formed from shadow magic. The sheer suddenness of their appearance sent a chill through Mrs. Nepol, whose legs trembled as she stumbled backward in fear.
But Weiss didn't flinch. Her eyes remained fixed on Rhodes.
"Their noses are extremely sharp. If your children are anywhere nearby, they'll find them." He gently ran a hand along the side of the larger wolf's head, repeating calmly, "I need the children's clothes, or anything with their scent."
His composure, his quiet determination, and his decisive action pierced through the fog of panic. Weiss snapped out of her daze and bolted into the house. Moments later, she returned with two sheets from Jenny and Hunter's beds clutched tightly in her arms.
"Please... bring them back..." she whispered, her voice cracking as tears welled in her eyes.
Rhodes had the wolves sniff the sheets to lock onto the children's scent, then gave a sharp signal. The three wolves dashed off without hesitation, noses to the ground, tails low, tracking through the village snow.
"Trust in the power of Fairy Tail," Rhodes said with confidence as he reached once more for his pendant. "Scuttle Crab!"
Two Scuttle crabs burst from the light, their powerful legs already bracing for travel. Elfman didn't wait for instructions. He climbed onto one with practiced ease.
Rhodes mounted the other, and just before taking off, he looked back and spoke gently to Mrs. Nepol.
"I'm sorry if I startled you earlier. Everything happened so quickly. When we return, I'll apologize properly. But for now, could I ask you to stay with Mrs. Weiss?"
Mrs. Nepol, still shaken, nodded quickly.
Rhodes offered Weiss one last smile—soft, reassuring, sincere.
"Please prepare something warm for when we come back. It's freezing in the mountains, and the children might catch cold."
