Fairy Tail: I Don't Want to Be the Guild Master-Chapter 220: Not enough magic power?
Chapter 220 - Not enough magic power?
Liz's room was beautifully decorated.
The entire space was covered in shades of soft pink. The wallpaper was patterned with adorable animals, bunnies, kittens, bears, while star- and moon-shaped ornaments dangled gently from the ceiling.
A small bed was set neatly against the wall, dressed in fluffy pink sheets and a matching comforter. White tassel curtains framed the windows. Plush dolls shaped like bears, rabbits, and puppies were nestled among the pillows.
It was clear Mr. Jopa and Mrs. Ivy had poured their hearts into this room. They cherished their daughter deeply.
And yet, the little girl who should've been smiling in this cozy space now sat motionless on her bed, as still and delicate as a porcelain doll.
After receiving Jopa's approval, Wendy quietly stepped forward and approached Liz with gentle caution.
Rhodes followed silently at her side, and Erza stood behind them, watching Liz's every movement.
"Hello," Wendy said softly. "Are you Liz?"
There was no response.
"My name is Wendy. Would you like to be my friend?" She offered her hand with a warm, hopeful smile.
With her kind voice and gentle demeanor, Wendy was the type of girl most children would immediately take a liking to.
But Liz didn't respond. She didn't even glance in Wendy's direction.
"Can you hear me?" Wendy tried again, waving her hand lightly in front of Liz's blank gaze.
This time, Liz closed her eyes and slumped over without warning.
"Liz!" Wendy cried out, quickly moving to catch her.
"Liz!" Mrs. Ivy rushed over too, supporting her daughter with trembling hands.
Together, they gently eased Liz onto the bed. Her face remained pale, her breathing shallow.
"This happens often," Ivy murmured tearfully. "She just collapses out of nowhere... and lately it's happening more and more."
Rhodes furrowed his brow. He had never seen a condition like this. The only thing he could think to try was his healing spell, Blue Buff, but there was no telling whether it would help.
Erza, despite her usual confidence, was helpless too. Even with her nurse outfit from her Requip magic, she could do little more than take a temperature.
All eyes turned to Wendy now.
Jopa asked nervously, "Do you... have any idea what's happening to her?"
Wendy pressed her lips together in thought. "If Liz is simply unresponsive, it could be psychological—trauma, maybe."
She glanced at the unconscious girl, her voice quieter.
"But the way she faints so frequently, it's almost like she's being affected by poison. And given everything, a curse is still a possibility."
Ivy gripped her husband's arm tightly. "Do you have a way to help her?"
Wendy hesitated, clearly feeling the weight of their hope. "I want to try magic to remove abnormal conditions first. Then detoxification magic, and finally a basic healing spell. But..."
Rhodes chimed in, remembering the last time Wendy had gone all-out, "You're worried your magic power might not hold up, right?"
Rhodes remembered the last time Wendy used her healing magic, both of them had collapsed together in a corner afterward.
Wendy's eyes shimmered with worry. "I'm sorry. I can only use one type of magic at a time in short bursts."
Erza glanced at Rhodes and gave a confident smile. "If you're worried about your magic reserves, don't be."
"Yeah," Rhodes nodded, ruffling Wendy's hair. "Leave the magic power to me."

Wendy blinked up at him in confusion. "Huh...? But how—?"
He just smiled. "When can you start?"
Wendy didn't quite understand, but she didn't question him. "Whenever you're ready."
"Then let's do it now." Rhodes looked around Liz's room. The ceiling was low, and summoning a golem here would definitely wreck it. He'd have to use Take over magic and receive it instead.
That meant crouching down to avoid crashing through the roof.
"Mr. Jopa, Mrs. Ivy," he said, glancing at the couple. "Could you step back for a moment?"
"Of course!" Jopa quickly pulled his wife toward the doorway, though Ivy's eyes never left her daughter.
Erza stood protectively by Wendy, making space.
"Take over: Blue Sentinel!"
Rhodes half-squatted and activated his magic. A shimmer of energy erupted from his body as his form shifted, hardening into smooth, stone-like armor carved with glowing blue runes. A radiant core pulsed in his chest, like a magical heart.
Even while crouching, he nearly brushed the star-and-moon decorations dangling from the ceiling. He had to remain perfectly still just to avoid wrecking the room.
"Mr. Rhodes?" Wendy asked, wide-eyed.
She wasn't the only one surprised. Jopa and Ivy stared at him in disbelief. They had expected a wizard, not a walking statue glowing with arcane power.
Rhodes said nothing. He simply reached out, his palm glowing with soft blue light. "Blue Buff."
Three shimmering orbs of blue magic floated around Wendy. The energy swirled into her like calm streams feeding a lake.
Wendy felt her body grow lighter and nodded. "I'm ready!"
"Begin," Rhodes said.
"Status resistance up- Liliege!"
A blue magic circle formed under Liz's bed. A translucent field shimmered around her like a bubble of protective light.
"Dispel abnormal condition- Disperu!"
Wendy pressed her glowing hand gently to Liz's chest. Light flared across the shield and into the little girl's body.
The spell lasted only a few dozen seconds, but Wendy's small frame wobbled as the magic faded. She was already running on empty.
"Wendy!" Erza stepped forward, catching the girl in her arms before she could collapse.
Rhodes watched silently. A part of him wondered if letting her fall might have been easier, at least the floor was wooden.
Healing magic required a considerable amount of mana, something Wendy, like Rhodes, still struggled with. Even under the effects of the Blue Buff, her total magic reserves simply weren't enough to cast multiple spells in succession.
After waiting several minutes for Wendy's mana to recover, the effect of Blue Buff wore off.
Rhodes immediately reapplied the spell.
"One more time." Wendy steadied herself, stretching out her hand. A soft green light began to glow from her palm. "Ditox!"
The green aura washed over Liz's body, gentle and steady. It was the second step in Wendy's plan, an effort to eliminate any possible toxins.
They repeated the process once more after a short rest. Wendy then used standard healing magic to stabilize Liz's condition.
From the outside, it looked like a flurry of spells and bright lights, a real effort.
Mr. Jopa and Mrs. Ivy watched anxiously from the doorway. Seeing the intense work Wendy and Rhodes were putting in gave them a glimmer of hope.
But when Wendy collapsed in Erza's arms for the third time, Rhode calmly reapplied Blue buff to support her, then released his Take over form and returned to normal.
Mrs. Ivy's emotions were already in turmoil. She stepped forward nervously to check on her daughter. Mr. Jopa, more composed, first checked Wendy's condition and then turned to Erza.
"I-is there any improvement? How is Liz?"
Wendy wiped the sweat from her forehead and spoke apologetically. "It's still too early to tell. Liz should rest. Let's come back tomorrow and see if there's any change overnight."
"Of course, of course! You're welcome to stay here, we have plenty of guest rooms," Mr. Jopa offered quickly.
"No need," Erza replied politely. "We've already booked rooms at the inn, and our companions are waiting for us there."
She could tell that Wendy had something she wanted to discuss privately. But as she stood to leave, Erza gave a reassuring smile and added, "If anything happens, don't hesitate to call on us right away."
...
By the time they stepped out onto the street, the sun had already set and warm lamplight spilled from windows and street lanterns. The town of Poppy was quiet under the blanket of twilight.
They hadn't gone far when Happy and Carla flew over to meet them.
Carla landed neatly on Wendy's shoulder and immediately asked, "So? How is the child? Did you figure out what's wrong?"
"I don't know yet," Wendy said softly, shaking her head. "None of my healing spells worked on her."
Erza frowned. "Not even the first two?"
Wendy looked down. "I tried Liliege to raise her resistance and Disperu to dispel any status effects. But neither seemed to help. Then I used Ditox, and even that didn't do anything." Her voice trembled as she covered her face with both hands. "I'm sorry. I'm useless.
wuwuwu..."
Carla immediately stepped in. "That's not true! Healing magic isn't all-powerful. Don't blame yourself."
Even though she didn't fully understand the illness, Carla refused to let Wendy carry the weight of the failure alone.
"She's right," Rhodes added firmly. "There may be something deeper going on here, something outside the scope of healing magic. We'll need to dig further."
Carla glanced at Erza, recalling what she'd said earlier.
"What do you mean by 'the first two spells'? How many times did Wendy use magic today? Why does she look so drained?"
