Forest Ranger, starting from Picking Up a Lynx Girl-Chapter 243 - : Parents Are True Love, Child Is an Accident
Chapter 243 -243: Parents Are True Love, Child Is an Accident
Old Gao needed to collect data on birds, so Chen Ying simply organized the plant distribution data for elevations above two thousand five hundred meters a bit.
He had come out with Yin Li a few times and roughly understood the type of data needed for plant protection.
Though it was a bit simple, all the basic data were there.
Traditionally, plant protection tended to focus more on issues of pests, diseases, and rodent problems, and the conservation of rare plants was generally a struggle that reached the level of a researcher.
Of course, researchers have people under them who do the work, and most of the specific tasks belong to the graduate students.
Relying on memory, he recorded and organized the data, planning to send it to Yin Li later to review on his own.
Brothers collecting data for him in the oxygen-thin high mountains—wasn’t their relationship ironclad?
After a day and a half, four robust men huffed and puffed up the mountain, their luggage and supplies likely enough to last half a month.
Chen Ying hadn’t met the leader, but Old Gao was very familiar with him and introduced him as Song Halu’s proudest disciple, ranking sixth in the lineage, and just as “sixth brother” in nature.
“He’s not of the Han Clan, his minority group’s name is particularly tongue-twisting, so we all call him ‘Sixth Brother,’ and you can do the same.”
Sixth Brother was very hearty, but Chen Ying didn’t know in what aspect he was a “six.”
Chen Ying didn’t chat with them much, having been out for so long, he was kind of missing his own little cabin.
Half of the summer had already passed, and most of the creatures on the mountain had finished mating and given birth to babies.
On this trip, Chen Ying basically didn’t come across any abandoned cubs, and it’s possible some young ones didn’t even leave bones behind.
In general, having encircled a great route, the ecosystem he saw was still relatively intact, much better than he had anticipated.
The data he collected this time was stored on a separate hard drive, including not just the data he needed, but also data on birds, plants, fish, and amphibians.
Although he had an encyclopedic knowledge base, recognizing and understanding some things were two different matters.
As an intermediate technical level veterinarian, generally speaking, he had not yet reached the stage of performing surgeries on amphibians.
A practicing veterinarian qualification is obtained through an exam, while technical titles are conferred through evaluation.
He estimated that upon his return, he could apply for the Senior Level Veterinarian title.
After sharing a meal with the brothers who came to support Old Gao, Chen Ying set off down the mountain the next morning.
He specifically went to the area where Mr. Lepus lived to find Jinya and Little Jin, telling them he had to head back first and also asking them to put in a few good words with the Snow Leopard Lady for him, so she wouldn’t trouble Old Gao and the others.
Jinya agreed quickly, but whether she would remember was uncertain, though thankfully, with reliable Little Jin there, there shouldn’t be too many issues.
As for Jinya’s idea of relocating their area’s burgeoning rabbit population here to reproduce, so the lynx family could satisfy their hunger without much effort, that needed to be studied.
Breeding wasn’t something that could be done so easily, an area’s ecosystem has its own balance, and human intervention could cause unpredictable problems.
It would be up to Jinya and Little Jin to run farther to catch prey to feed.
Mr. Lepus was still okay, being a warm-hearted daddy, and with Jinya as an enthusiastic girl, three fierce cats wouldn’t fail to raise the mother and her two kittens.
Chen Ying didn’t descend to the valley but backtracked and circled from the middle to the mountainside before heading down.
Little Jin escorted him part of the way until he found the old path, and then it returned to guard Jinya.
Finding the familiar path also meant encountering familiar beasts.
After being separated for just half a day, Chen Ying spotted that group of monkeys.
The group of short-tailed monkeys that liked to soak in the hot springs.
Chen Ying took a special look and didn’t notice the Monkey Grandmother.
The young female monkey, who had recently become a mother, was also missing; who knows whether she hadn’t come over or had left the group.
There were several other monkeys in the group that recognized Chen Ying, and one of the half-grown little monkeys even came over to greet him expressly.
Chen Ying stroked the little monkey’s fur, wanting to ask about the Monkey Grandmother and the young mother, but before he could speak, the little monkey was scooped away by its mother.
Was she guarding against him?
Chen Ying had no experience being disliked by animals and curiously observed for a while, but the mother monkey couldn’t seem to withstand his gaze and hid behind the other monkeys.
The troop of monkeys dispersed, seeking food among the branches.
Chen Ying watched for a while and was about to leave when he was startled by an old monkey that appeared behind him.
The aged monkey was slowly sucking on a piece of fruit, making low noises while feasting.
From a distance, that kind couldn’t be heard clearly.
“The Grandmother died, the young girl had a fallout with the Monkey King and went to another group, a fair distance from here, on the other side of the mountain.”
The old monkey finished the fruit in two sucks and left, focusing only on the fruit in its hand during the talk, not sparing Chen Ying a glance.
Chen Ying, feeling slightly somber, stood for a while, then exhaled softly and didn’t look back.
Some people, some animals, would eventually be lost on the journey forward.
As long as it’s still alive, that’s good news.
Chen Ying took two days to reach the hot springs.
In the same old place, he set up camp and rested.
There was a signal here, so he called Little Sen to report safety, and also reported back to his teacher.
“No problem then. Your recent fieldwork with Little Gao was very successful. After you get back, find the time to return to school, and I’ll take you to a place.”
“Nah, teacher, I don’t really wanna…”
“Don’t be an idiot. Last time that Song guy was out to get you, and only because someone else spoke up for you did you scrape through. Otherwise, before Song left, you’d have been in trouble. Besides, with Xiaozhai Village planning on getting into animal rescue and shelter, you’ve got to make good connections with others, right?”
Professor Bai knew his star student’s weaknesses very well and never expected him to pursue a political career.
But in our society, good skills alone aren’t enough; without the knack for networking, someone could trip you up over the smallest issue.
It’s okay not to be ambitious, but you can’t cut yourself off from the world.
He wasn’t young anymore and could look out for Chen Ying while he was around, but if anything unexpected happened, with this kid’s temperament, he’d probably have no choice but to go home and mooch off his parents.
Without another word, Professor Bai hung up. The matter was settled.
Chen Ying put down his phone with a heavy sigh, feeling somewhat irritable.
He understood the rationale but that didn’t make him any less annoyed.
He lay down and scrolled through his phone for a while.
He saw photos and a short video of Yin Li horseback riding on his social media feed, with comments piling up fast.
Yin Li had gone to a new protection zone, fitting in like a fish to water, totally at ease.
The leadership at that reserve was decent, they respected professionals, and there were hardly ever any cases of amateurs instructing the pros.
Chen Ying sent a sarcastic comment, and just as he was about to put the phone away and sleep, Yin Li called.
“Do you want to come over for a visit? I promised before that you would come over to give us some guidance. Now’s your chance, come join me on a mission.”
“What mission?”
Updat𝓮d fr𝙤m ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com.
“Assisting with the Tibetan antelope migration and birthing.”
“Holy crap, wait for me, I’ll file a report once I get back!”
Yin Li said he was arranging work with the report in hand, and if Chen Ying was coming, he would need to get his name on the medical protection group’s list.
Shouldn’t be a problem, the head of the medical team there was Duanmu’s uncle. Duanmu and Xiao Song had previously taken on a separate veterinarian rescue job at a protection zone, thanks to his uncle’s recommendation.
Of course, it also depended on Duanmu and Xiao Song’s own capabilities; if there was any issue, his uncle could end up out of a job too.
After chatting with Yin Li, Chen Ying looked at the time and decisively called his teacher.
“So, you’re saying you can’t come for now?”
Hearing Professor Bai’s tone, Chen Ying felt a chill down his spine.
Was the teacher brewing some kind of master move?
“It’s fine, just come over; you need to pass by my place anyway to get to Yin Li’s. Think it over if you decide not to come.”
With the storm brewing in his calm tone, after the call, Chen Ying silently sent a message to Professor Bai’s eldest daughter.
“Ha ha ha, come on, Little Ying. My dad won’t hurt you, there’s good news for you.”
The more she said, the more uneasy Chen Ying felt.
This cryptic stuff is torturous; why can’t they just speak clearly?
With his mind in turmoil, he endured a restless night, and by the following evening, he had rushed back to the rescue station’s small building.
Lin Li and Feng Xin had already left.
Their time at the rescue station hadn’t done much for their technical skills, but it opened up new horizons for them.
They were planning to join the local volunteer team in Dian Province.
After their last trip there, the captivating rainforest made Feng Xin linger in thought, and upon his return, he convinced Lin Li to go with him.
About a week after Chen Ying and the others had left, a new exploration operation was launched in Dian Province. Feng Xin managed to sign up successfully, and since he couldn’t wait for Chen Ying and Old Gao to return, he had to ask Little Sen to explain, and then he dragged Lin Li away.
It was a relief that the protection zone had been peaceful recently.
The pandas with cubs were specially taken care of by the protection center’s staff, not needing Little Sen to intervene.
He just handled making some cornbread, fixing some bottles of milk for the babies, and occasionally checking in on Mendun’er and her three cubs.
But there was also a somewhat dramatic development.
Foodie Fu’s temporary husband, that Jianzi Meat panda, actually turned up.
He was wandering around the semi-wild area on the periphery of the center.
Initially, the center staff thought it was a wild panda that had come down the mountain for help because of an injury or illness.
They joked in their group chat that even giant pandas knew to seek professional help when sick these days.
But when Little Sen saw someone’s social media post, he quietly mentioned that it seemed like Foodie Fu’s husband, the father of her chubby cub.
Once the center heard the news, there was quite a commotion. After a tentative meeting was arranged between Foodie Fu and the wild panda, they witnessed an overly mushy scene that was simply too much love to handle.
Curiously, Foodie Fu also tried to sneak the male to see her precious baby, didn’t succeed, got mad, and even tried breaking the iron bars to snatch her cub.
It took Daddy Xu to courageously allow the male panda to glimpse at the baby through a glass window without any direct contact, because nobody could afford the responsibility if anything went wrong.
Luckily, after just one look at its cub, the Jianzi Meat panda lost interest and turned back to affectionately cuddle and lick Foodie Fu, as attentive as an old house on the verge of catching flame again.
