Chapter 269 -269: Don’t think I’m big; I’m young, though, Niu Niu
“Uncle Tashi, I remember there are no records of the Golden Silk Yak in this area, right?”
“Golden Silk Yak?”
Uncle Tashi, who had been helping to move things, wiped his hands and took the binoculars from Chen Ying. After looking through them, he appeared even more stunned than Chen Ying.
A brown-yellow yak shimmered with a touch of gold in the sunlight, leisurely grazing on the grass by the lake.
But what was strange was that there was no Wild Yak Herd nearby, meaning this Golden Wild Yak had wandered over from who knows where.
“Currently, the only recorded Golden Wild Yaks are in the Qiangtang Nature Reserve, and their numbers are not many.”
Although Qiangtang isn’t too far from here.
But ‘not too far’ is relative to cars; on four legs, it would take several months, right?
The scientific research team also had unmanned drones. After deploying two or three to scout the area, they confirmed that aside from a wild yak herd ten kilometers to the northwest, there were no similar creatures within a ten-kilometer radius.
It’s manageable with a herd of yaks, but a lone one is much more dangerous.
And as they were discussing this, they saw the Golden Wild Yak suddenly charge at a vulture that was spreading its wings.
Under the sun, the Wild Yak lowered its head, its horns aiming at the vulture.
The vulture, clearly startled, quickly flapped its wings and took off.
The Golden Wild Yak, having failed to hit its target, ran in a small circle before gradually slowing down and nonchalantly walking towards them.
“What do we do, Director, what do we do, it’s really coming this way.”
A lone wild yak has a very wild nature; they’re the type that would charge at cars on the road.
The scientific research team had set up camp here after scouting the area and ensuring there was no danger.
Who could have predicted that they would encounter Lynx thievery first and then get targeted by a Wild Yak?
The yak approached the campsite along the lake shore, its pace not slow.
Uncle Tashi, with a serious expression, stepped to the front to observe the yak’s advancement route.
“This big guy seems to be heading this way. I’ll drive out to divert it, you all be on guard.”
Yin Li wanted to accompany him but was refused by Uncle Tashi.
“Director Yin and Dr. Chen, you two just need to protect the comrades from the research team. One person driving is enough.”
If the car got stuck, it’s better to have one person injured than everyone.
Chen Ying glanced at the two Lynxes, wanting to say something but ultimately holding back.
It would be foolhardy for the Lynxes to take on the yak; he couldn’t sacrifice them just to protect humans.
But Sister Lynx read his momentary thought, stood up, and trotted towards the yak.
The other Lynx watched for a while and, unable to hold back, followed after her ten or so meters later.
Lynx Sister sneakily stopped a distance away, lying low in the grass, observing the big creature’s movements.
Uncle Tashi drove a big circle around, preparing to approach the Wild Yak from another direction to attract its attention and see if he could lead it away.
Ideally, draw it towards the herd of Wild Yaks a few kilometers away.
When yaks fight among themselves, humans benefit.
Lynx Sister calmly watched and, seeing the yak slowly walking towards her, took a few steps back before running in another direction.
The movement of her running caught the Wild Yak’s attention.
The big creature stood in place for a while, hesitated, ran a few steps towards where she went, then turned back to look towards the humans and finally decided to continue with its original plan.
Lynx Sister, seeing that the ruse hadn’t fooled the yak, stopped after running a few yards and thought for a moment before trotting away.
The Large Lynx, not understanding what she was up to, kept on following.
At this moment, Uncle Tashi from the other side of the lake made a wide detour, gradually approaching the Wild Yak’s position.
The lakeside wasn’t entirely marshy; at least the ground where the Wild Yak was walking was firm, despite some water.
Uncle Tashi tentatively drew closer, using the engine noise to attract the Wild Yak’s attention.
It seemed to work a bit—the Wild Yak looked back a couple of times, then turned back and walked a few meters.
Just when everyone thought the plan had worked, the big creature seemed to notice something, continued to stand still for several minutes, then turned and trotted back toward the camp.
Chen Ying and Yin Li started sweating.
All the members of the scientific research team got into the vehicles, ready to evacuate the area.
Losing supplies was a minor issue, but human safety was paramount.
Just when they were within one or two hundred meters of a close encounter, the Lynx suddenly appeared, pouncing with its claws outstretched toward the Wild Yak.
With its thick skin and swift reflexes, the yak shook its head, and the Lynx only left a shallow scratch on its back.
Taking advantage of its agility, the Lynx used the Wild Yak’s back as a springboard to leap to the ground, then quickly dodged away.
The Wild Yak, angered, let out a “moo,” stamped twice and snorted heavily, but did not give chase and continued towards the lake.
Lynx Sister was stunned; what was this big guy’s deal, not taking the bait after such provocation?
At that moment, the Large Lynx seemed to have realized something.
Taking advantage of the Wild Yak’s caution towards Lynx Sister, it quickly dashed from another angle.
The Wild Yak was injured for the second time.
Endurance is fine, but yaks are intolerable.
The wild yak was now angered, chasing after the large lynx.
But after running for over a hundred meters, the wild yak stopped again.
Gasping for breath, the large lynx also halted, unable to initiate another chase – it would cost her life!
The wild yak stood still for a while before suddenly turning around and continuing towards the lake.
“Don’t you think that this wild yak seems to have a very clear goal? It seems to chase the lynxes only to drive them away, not letting them obstruct its own path,” said Chen Ying, forming a thought after watching carefully.
“Ali, I don’t mean to be presumptuous, but could it be that the wild yak is coming specifically for me?”
The intention of the yak was too obvious.
Solo yaks like this one are the least tolerant to provocation.
If they or other animals disturb them, the yak will bravely launch an attack.
Yet, this yak had been provoked several times, bearing injuries, but hadn’t been enraged to the point of losing its mind; on the contrary, it steadfastly continued on its precise goal.
He really started to feel that the yak was indeed coming for him.
“So, I’ll go and test the waters. You back me up from behind.”
“Are you insane? This is a yak, not the tame old buffalo from back home! What if it hurts you?”
“Don’t worry, I’m sure nothing will happen to me.”
Yin Li grabbed him, his expression stern.
“Chen Ying, don’t risk your life just because you think you have a bit of talent. You only have one life, and once it’s gone, it’s gone. You can’t just load a previous save like in a game,” Yin Li warned.
Chen Ying knew Yin Li was worried about him, but someone had to deal with this issue; they couldn’t just let the yak destroy the camp.
“Relax, I’m just going over to see if we can communicate without it losing its mind.”
Chen Ying patted Yin Li’s hand off his arm, freeing himself, and slowly approached the wild yak.
As expected, the yak stopped moving when it saw Chen Ying approaching, quietly observing him.
When he was about a dozen meters away, Chen Ying’s back was covered in sweat. He tentatively stretched out his hand.
The wild yak slowly approached, gaily wagging its tail, seemingly in a stable mood – not of a disposition to face death nonchalantly.
“Mooo,” the wild yak’s voice was deep as it came closer and licked Chen Ying’s hand.
The yak’s tongue was rough but lacked the barbs of a carnivore, its warm touch took Chen Ying by surprise.
He tentatively reached to touch the yak’s head. Niu Niu didn’t shy away, even tilting its head to make it easier for him.
“Moo, are you the ‘Two-legged beast’ they say can help Niu Niu?”
Incredibly, he was actually able to communicate, and judging from the voice, it was of a youngster!
This voice did not match its formidable appearance at all!
“Moo, I want to find my mother. Can you help me find her?”
“When did you last see your mother?”
“I don’t know, it’s been a very long time. I’ve been wandering around the grasslands for many suns and moons.”
Niu Niu’s tone was a bit somber.
“My mother disappeared all of a sudden, during a snowy day. I looked for her for a long time and couldn’t find her.”
“What about your herd?”
“They didn’t want me to stay, they drove me away, so I left. I will find my mother on my own.”
Is there a possibility, young one, that your mother hid on purpose, intentionally driving you away?
But he couldn’t say that directly, he had to be more roundabout.
“But I’ve heard it’s common for many yaks like you. The mothers leave because they feel their children can stand on their own. It’s time for them to live independently and reproduce.”
“Is it really so? But why didn’t mother tell me directly?”
It sounded like it was about to cry.
Who would have thought such a massive beast like Niu Niu could still be such a crybaby!
Plus, even among a wild yak herd, this youngster’s size was notable. Perhaps its mother really didn’t want to nurse it any longer – the burden of feeding it might be heavier than Kunlun Mountain itself!
The calf bowed its head, tears rolling down in large droplets.
Seeing this, Chen Ying couldn’t bear it – how had he become the creepy guy who bullies kids?
He quickly extended a hand to soothe it.
“It’s okay. If you can’t find your mother, you can find a mate. When you have your own children in the future, you can show them to your mother and let her see you can take care of yourself.”
On the grasslands, as long as a wild yak grows up, there are few fierce beasts that dare claim they can capture a yak.
Seeing the calf’s despondency, Chen Ying put his hands on his hips and thought for a moment, patting its head and leading it by the horns towards Uncle Tashi.
“Uncle Tashi, I’d like to ask you something.”
He stopped at a distance, seeing Uncle Tashi unable to close his gaping mouth, Chen Ying gave an awkward smile and patted the wild yak’s neck in passing.
“Uncle, does your farm need a wild yak like this? Or is there a herd of wild yaks there? This is still a young calf. When it grows up, it could become a quality breeding bull.”
Upon hearing Chen Ying’s words, Uncle Tashi took a while to close his mouth.
A Golden Wild Yak! Of course he wanted one, even in his dreams. But he was also sensible: it wasn’t proper to have a Golden Wild Yak in their ranch, it could attract the wrong kind of attention.
However, regarding the Wild Yak Herd, perhaps he could be of some help.
