Forest Ranger, starting from Picking Up a Lynx Girl-Chapter 298 - : The Surgery Was Very Successful
Chapter 298 -298: The Surgery Was Very Successful
Chen Ying leaned against the door, anxiously watching Xiao Shen.
“You keep rinsing and wiping your lips, you’re going to rub the skin raw.”
“It’s alright, Brother Ying, don’t worry about me. I’ll be fine soon, yue~”
Did it look like he could be fine soon?
Throughout the day, Xiao Shen had been in a weakened state, unable to stand the sight of even a half-dead mouse.
He had even canceled his favorite activity of kissing the lynx.
He knew that lynxes ate rodents, but each time he took the lynx out, he would wipe down its mouth upon returning before giving it a kiss.
But, hiding the body of a wood mouse was something he’d never considered!
Just thinking about that wood mouse, dead for who knows how long, being hidden away, and the little lynx occasionally going to lick it, and then turning to lick him…
Ugh, can’t think about it, yue~
The little lynx incident passed quickly, and that evening, as everyone chatted on the second-floor balcony, Old Gao saw Chen Ying endlessly scrolling through tumor information at home and abroad.
“What’s wrong? Does someone suspect they have a tumor?”
“The young female bear,” Chen Ying put down his stylus, pinched the bridge of his nose, “She was found to be pregnant during her last checkup, but she’s been unwell these past few days. When I was in Xiaozhai Village heping with surgery, a street rat came to me for help.”
Chen Ying sent the examination results stored on his phone to the group chat.
“Now, the Bear Garden has taken them both in and has scheduled a CT scan for tomorrow evening. I hope the results will be good.”
“An abdominal CT? Then…”
Little Sen said half of what he meant, then stopped talking. Truly fond of giant pandas, he had grown fond of the several black bears that had helped care for the panda cubs.
Especially the gentle young female bear, which would even voluntarily come to help Mendun’er with the babies.
“We have no choice, compared to the babies, her health is more important.”
“I discussed it with some people today and also sent an email to Professor Everett, hoping he could help me determine the nature of the tumor.”
At the moment, Professor Bai and the domestic black bear experts all believed there was a high likelihood it was benign, but they also felt that it was better to do the surgery first before having the babies.
Some humans consider their children more important than their own lives, and the same is found in the animal kingdom.
The young female bear was one such case.
Of course, it might also be because the female it had been in contact with had given birth to children sequentially over the last couple of years, which stimulated its maternal instincts.
Little Sen opened the information in the chat group, primarily to learn how to diagnose the health problem, as his skills were not yet at the level of independently performing tumor removal surgery on a black bear.
Chen Ying wouldn’t lead the surgery either. With Bear Garden experts present, it wasn’t his turn to step in.
But he also hoped he could be present in the observation deck during the surgery, just in case.
After two days of nervous waiting, the results finally arrived: it was a tumor, but the analysis suggested that the probability of malignancy was not high.
The veterinarian at the Bear Garden said they would arrange the surgery as soon as possible, hoping to allow the young female bear to have her own little cubs next year.
The surgery was scheduled for a week later, and the Bear Garden’s veterinarian hoped Chen Ying could come and help soothe both the young female bear and the street rat.
Especially the street rat, which seemed to sense something and had become very irritable lately, not allowing others to approach the young female bear.
“It has no appetite and doesn’t want to move, curling itself up in the corner, hugging its stomach, looking very vigilant.”
The Bear Garden’s veterinarian sent a video to Chen Ying to show him.
In the video, the young female bear had obviously lost a lot of weight.
The visible emaciation and listlessness happened in just a week.
Just then, Ding Wen sent a message saying that a wealthy individual had hired a renowned international veterinary team to treat a white lion, meaning that extra income opportunity was gone.
Hearing about Chen Ying’s side arranging a tumor removal surgery for a black bear, Ding Wen immediately said he wanted to come and observe.
The operating room at the Bear Garden was basic but had everything that was needed.
Chen Ying did not take the stage; instead, he led the street rat into a separate rest room to watch the surgery through a camera.
He couldn’t help it. From the moment the young female bear was taken away for preoperative preparations, the street rat became extremely anxious and agitated, almost to the point of madness.
Chen Ying was originally in the operating room, but when he heard from the keeper that the street rat was not doing well emotionally, he immediately came out to soothe it.
There was a large iron cage in the rest room. Chen Ying guided the street rat inside to settle down and gave it a full basin of fruit.
Then he dragged a table over, put the display on it and showed the street rat some beautiful pictures of the young female bear.
Seeing the scrolling photos on the screen, the street rat gradually calmed down.
In fact, black bears don’t have good vision, and it couldn’t really see such small images clearly, but accompanied by the young female bear’s grunting sounds coming from the video, the street rat sat down, clinging to the bars, ears pricked up, earnestly looking at the display.
The camera in the operating room was linked to Chen Ying’s phone, and he sat down cross-legged next to the cage, eyes glued to the small screen.
The process went smoothly.
The veterinarian’s skill at the Bear Garden was truly impressive, and with careful analysis of the surgery’s key points beforehand with Chen Ying and Professor Bai, they had practically memorized the procedure.
When they began to separate the tumor, Chen Ying became so nervous that his breathing nearly stopped. He subconsciously lifted the phone screen higher to see the incision process more clearly.
Suddenly, a bear paw reached through the bars, snatched his phone, and imitating his posture, placed the phone against its chest and stared intently down at it.
“Street rat, give it back to me, right now. You can’t understand a damn thing, why bother?”
The street rat didn’t give it back; instead, it sat there, spun around, leaning against the iron railing, clutching the mobile phone tightly.
Chen Ying searched for quite a while, and when threatened by its bared teeth, she grabbed the phone and ran to the other end to fiddle with it.
Chen Ying gritted her teeth in frustration but couldn’t do anything about it.
“Are you going to give it back or not? If you don’t, I’m taking your fruit bowl away, understand?”
Chen Ying went to move its fruit bowl; the street rat swiftly slid over, tucked the bowl in its chest, and ran back to the corner.
It juggled the phone while sneak-peaking Chen Ying’s movements.
Hearing the squeaking of the screen being scratched, Chen Ying felt as if her heart was bleeding.
Though it was a domestically made phone, she had gotten used to it and had no plans to switch just yet.
After finally wrestling the phone from the street rat’s claws, she saw, well, the tempered film was shattered!
Fortunately, the screen itself was still intact, but the case needed changing, scratched up with several marks.
Bootting the phone back up, the critical steps were already done; the vet was cleaning the abdominal cavity, readying for suturing.
“Stay put here; I’m going to check on your wife. If you cause any more trouble, I won’t let you see her!”
Hearing Chen Ying say this, the street rat barked out in anger.
“Hey, did you learn that from Great Bai or Mendun’er? Come on, bark again, I want to hear it.”
Ding Wen, who had been standing at the door for a minute watching the interaction with the street rat, couldn’t help but chime in.
“You know, you’re more of a dog than it is!”
Chen Ying, hearing Ding Wen’s voice, turned around, “You’re out? Was the surgery successful?”
“Very successful; it’s been sent for biopsy already, and the results should be available soon.”
The biopsy samples would be sent over to the rescue center laboratory; results could take about three days.
Although they as clinicians suspected it to be benign, definitive results could only be confirmed after the biopsy.
Forty minutes later, the Bear Garden Medical Team notified them that the young female bear had been moved to the observation room. Chen Ying, with the street rat in tow, decided to check on her before returning the street rat to the animal shed to rest.
Perched on the glass window, the street rat never blinked, staring at the unconscious young female bear on the bed, softly growling.
It was calling for the young female bear, asking if she was in pain.
Chen Ying rubbed its ears, “Your wife’s still weak, it’ll be several days before she can go back to the animal shed to recover. Be good, and I’ll come to check on you again, okay?”
The street rat howled, wanting to stay but was rejected mercilessly by Chen Ying.
Other bears were manageable, but the street rat was a genuine wild bear.
It seemed calm now, but if it got provoked, the Bear Garden would struggle to subdue it without extra measures.
Perhaps sensing the young female bear’s stable condition, the street rat gradually became quieter.
After letting it stay outside the observation room for more than ten minutes, Chen Ying escorted it back to the animal shed.
Ding Wen accompanied them the whole time, deeply moved by the interaction between them.
“Junior, I’m truly impressed. From my student days to now, I have seen many vets and keepers, but I have never seen anyone in China interact with animals so harmoniously. I’m not counting those raised from infancy; those animals are solely attached to their keepers.”
Chen Ying simply smiled, didn’t reply, patted the street rat’s head, placed its unfinished fruit bowl on the ground, then left the animal shed and locked the door.
Knowing that the young female bear was alive eased the street rat’s worries.
It hadn’t rested well for days, and after Chen Ying closed the door, it yawned, curled up, hugged its head, and quickly fell into a deep sleep.
Leading Ding Wen to the doctors’ office, the vet who performed the surgery was already sitting down to rest.
“Dr. Chen, having observed the surgery, how do you feel?”
“Brilliant!” Chen Ying gave a thumbs up, “Next time there’s a chance, we should collaborate.”
That vet’s surgical skills would stand out even in a human hospital.
“I have a lynx that might need heart surgery, nothing too complicated. The chief surgeon is expected to be a cardiology expert we will invite from another hospital, but I think we should take the opportunity to observe.”
“Sure, just let me know when, and I’ll definitely go.”
While he mainly focused on treatments related to black bears, observing animal heart surgeries would be hugely beneficial for his future treatments of black bears with cardiac issues.
Who would complain about having too many skills?
The surgery went smoothly, and the Bear Garden Medical Team’s mood also lifted considerably.
Being a natural at networking, Ding Wen quickly hit it off with the members of the Bear Garden medical staff.
They chatted enthusiastically, while Chen Ying had an in-depth discussion with the Bear Garden’s chief vet.
He would have to go to River Source soon, and it’s uncertain whether he would encounter brown bears needing rescue.
Although the Bear Garden vet primarily dealt with rescuing Asian black bears and Malayan bears, they would also rescue brown bears.
After acquiring some confidential information about brown bear diseases and common rescue treatments from the vet, Chen Ying reciprocated by sharing his method for accelerating wound healing during the post-operation period.
For him, it was all about reducing animals’ suffering; Chen Ying didn’t feel he was at a loss.
Just as he was about to leave, the veterinary office phone rang; a small, injured black bear had been found in a village forty kilometers away. The local Protection Station couldn’t handle the injury, and after some searching, they contacted the Bear Garden for help.
