Forest Ranger, starting from Picking Up a Lynx Girl-Chapter 301: The View from the Tree is Pleasant, Stay a While Longer
Under the tree, two people and a bear looked up in unison at the two little bear cubs in the tree.
Big Yueya was a good child, she climbed up to console the anxious Third cub, and then climbed down a bit and looked up, calling out to Cui Shao.
Cui Shao, trembling with fear, let go of her paws and climbed down two steps, imitating Big Yueya's movements. Suddenly she slipped and yelped like a dog, quickly hugging the tree trunk tightly.
Big Yueya wanted to bite her feet to encourage her not to be afraid and continue downwards, but after tentatively trying for a long time, the little feet couldn't even touch the next branch.
After trying for a while, not only did she not come down, she climbed higher instead, wedging herself at the fork of the tree trunk and humming non-stop.
Big Yueya had no choice but to climb down first, circled around the mother calling out for a while, and then prepared to go back up to find the Third cub.
At that point, Mendun'er couldn't stand it any longer, she squeezed past Chen Ying and scrambled up the tree, reaching the Third cub's feet in two or three movements and bit down, dragging her directly down.
"Hey, no need to be so rough, Mendun'er, slow down."
Chen Ying got a fright and quickly opened his hands, afraid that Third cub might accidentally fall from the tree.
Perhaps the mother's authority was greater than the fear, or perhaps with the mother there, the Third cub became much braver.
In any case, under the watchful eyes of everyone, Third cub imitated her mother's movements and slid down little by little.
Before she could fully touch the ground, Chen Ying reached out his hand and plucked the cub from the tree.
Mendun'er bared her teeth behind him, huffing and puffing before going off to crunch on a carrot.
All three cubs were fine; Mendun'er might have slapped them around, but she knew when to stop.
After receiving three sweet pieces of "Little Apple," the three panda cubs regained their energy.
Big Yueya and Little Yueya each had a whole apple, which they crunched into quarters in one bite.
Having finished their own "Guoguo," their gazes turned to their three little friends.
Third cub guarded its food fiercely. When Big Yueya's gaze came over, its food-defense radar suddenly kicked in, and with its bottom as the pivot, it stubbornly turned around, showing its back to Big and Small Yueya.
Big Zai struggled to bite the apple and ended up just holding it and eagerly licking the juice. Unwary, he was robbed by Big Yueya.
But robbed, he didn't make a fuss, shook his head, and pounced on Little Yueya.
Second cub was not interested in bamboo shoots, preferring the sweet fruits, and had already started trying to snatch and lick mother's bamboo.
Its tiny teeth couldn't bite through the bamboo stalks. At most, it could eat a bit of the bamboo leaves, which was more for playing than actual eating.
Seeing Big Zai give his "Guoguo" to Big Yueya, he held up his little bear paw to stop Big Yueya from grabbing the fruit in his paw, then turned and handed it to Little Yueya.
Little Sen gave them apples that were more accurately described as thicker slices rather than chunks, to help them grind their teeth and scrape a bit of apple puree to taste.
Currently, they were still primarily fed milk, with the number of feedings reduced to about three or four times a day.
Because Little Sen and the panda team fed the three cubs bowls of milk, Mendun'er's life had improved a lot recently compared to before. Her food intake increased, her output decreased, and she started to store fat, waiting for the coming cold winter.
After making sure the three cubs were fine, and although Big and Small Yueya had been punished, their condition was better than the three panda cubs, the humans withdrew from their side.
"Big Yueya is simply a little Bear Spirit. Given her physique, she's sure to be the boss of the forest in the future."
Little Sen, with an empty basket on his back, collected some bamboo shoots and branches on the way back, planning to store them in the cold storage for when a few Giant pandas came to visit, to ensure there would be food to offer.
Halfway back, Chen Ying saw Jinya circling in the tree.
"Jinya, what are you doing?"
Hearing Chen Ying's voice, Jinya whimpered and sped up, one swipe and she knocked out the squirrel she was toying with.
"Why the sudden interest in catching squirrels?"
Jinya hadn't eaten "Mouse Bars" for a long time; with autumn's plump rabbits, one rabbit was worth three "Mouse Bars."
Little Jin was accompanying Jinya in rabbit hunting, and he settled for rabbits to satisfy his hunger.
Recently, there were more squirrels in the forest than last year, attracting a greater number of medium and small predators that hunt squirrels.
Jinya carried the squirrel in her mouth without killing it right away; she planned to bring it back for the Little lynx to practice hunting.
She really was a good aunt!
Upon their return to the infirmary, Old Gao summoned them for breakfast and inquired about the situation.
Hearing that the little ones got up to mischief last night and were punished by their mother, Old Gao laughed so hard he nearly rolled off his stool.
"Come, take a look at what they did last night."
Old Gao brought up the surveillance video from the infirmary, which had already been edited.
Clicking play, they saw five little "Dumplings" with guilty expressions moving stealthily in the dark, each mouth carrying something. Under Big Yueya's lead, they skillfully avoided the lit areas and arrived outside Xiao Shen's room, beginning to set the scene.
Everyone knew what happened next, but the captured images of the five "Dumplings" under the spotlight with their little expressions were priceless.
Little Sen quickly snatched a photo and then uploaded it to his own social media account.
Over the past year, he had taken care of the pandas and posted many cute, funny, and amusing videos. He had already gained over a million followers and become a well-known panda influencer.
Chen Ying edited the video of Big Yueya teaching Third cub how to climb down the tree and uploaded it, once again going offline without waiting for any blowback.
Just after finishing breakfast, Ding Wen arrived with the ranger.
He had made a last-minute trip down the mountain to buy supplies yesterday and only followed the Protection Station's vehicle up the mountain this morning, perfectly missing out on the fun from earlier today.
After watching the video, Ding Wen slapped his thigh, "I want to apply to work at your place, it looks like so much fun!"
"Scram," Chen Ying gave him a sidelong glance, "You can apply to the rescue center at the foot of the mountain or sign up at the Xiaozhai Village shelter, but we don't need you here."
"You're heartless!"
Ding Wen attempted to throttle Chen Ying, but just as he reached out, a threatening growl came from nearby.
Looking up, well well, two Big Cats to his left and right were already in attack posture.
"Okay okay okay, I get it, I can't offend you guys."
Ding Wen was actually joking, but after seeing Jinya and Little Jin protecting Chen Ying, he seriously began to consider the possibility of a secondment.
He didn't belong to any specific agency, teaching at two vocational colleges and mostly traveling around the country, even the world, for research exchanges.
"Let's talk business. The school where I work has opened a veterinary medicine program. Do you want me to scout some talented students for you?"
"No need for now, we have enough people here."
The first aid station was truly on the front lines, releasing any rescued animals back into the wild once their injuries were treated.
Those that couldn't be released back but didn't require a long recovery could temporarily stay at the first aid station until they recovered.
Animals that lost the ability to survive in the wild would be transferred to relevant units for further treatment after being saved and given emergency care at the station.
So actually, the workload here was not that large. With Little Sen and Xiao Shen taking care of the animals and Old Gao responsible for the birds, the first aid station was running smoothly.
Ding Wen was tactful. Since Chen Ying didn't want greenhorns, he dropped the subject.
As for the previously mentioned rescue center and Xiaozhai Village shelter, he could handle them on his own, without needing Chen Ying's help.
By evening, the weather changed abruptly, with the wind howling fiercely, swaying the tree shadows, foreshadowing bad weather on the horizon.
Chen Ying returned from the uninhabited region in August, took a ten-day half-month trip around the Beilu Mountain Area, and then wandered off to West Africa; before he knew it, two months had passed, and it was officially October.
For them involved in rescues, the October Golden Week had nothing to do with them.
This place was not a tourist spot, no one came here for leisure, and ordinary tourists couldn't be allowed in.
As for the animals, they had no concept of a Golden Week; to them, it was work every day, yet a holiday every day.
As for Chen Ying and the others, did the animals think they couldn't fight, injure themselves, and ask for help during the Golden Week?
Usually, it wasn't until mid-October that the cold truly set in.
But this year, the temperature was unusual.
It had already cooled down sharply in the Beilu Mountains, causing Brother Chi to catch a severe cold, nearly developing into emphysema.
After getting out of the mountains, he fully recovered only after staying in the hospital for more than ten days.
They all thought winter might arrive early, but after more than twenty days of high temperatures, biologists started worrying about ecological issues, then suddenly one night, it began to snow the next day.
Chen Ying woke up in the morning, pushed open the window, and cold air swept in instantly.
He took a deep breath, the cold air stung his trachea, and he coughed twice before he got used to it.
Ding Wen was staying temporarily in the room above Xiao Shen's.
The wooden corridor between the two small buildings was set up as a small reception room.
Enclosed with glass, the corridor was three or four degrees warmer than outside.
With an electric heater on in winter, it could maintain around ten degrees Celsius.
Wrapped in an army coat he had scrounged from the Protection Station, Ding Wen shivered as he went downstairs for breakfast.
He had anticipated that it would be cold on the mountain, but he hadn't expected it to be this cold.
He had originally thought about staying longer, until just before the end-of-semester exams, to sort out those "little rascals," but now it seemed best to head back sooner.
Most of his courses were theoretical, and before this trip, he had given his students two months of assignments, with term-end grades primarily based on papers.
"You're planning to leave the day after tomorrow?"
Chen Ying took a bite of a dumpling and pulled out his phone to look.
"I'm probably departing for River Source on the first of next month. I was saying I could drop you off on the way, but it looks like you won't need a ride from me."
Ding Wen hit him with a light punch and turned to look at Little Sen.
"When your Brother Ying goes to River Source, he won't be back for a while, so if you need any help, just call me. Even if I can't make it, I can still send someone over for you."
They exchanged phone numbers and added Ding Wen to their group chat, then discussed the future development direction of the first aid station.
"Beautiful Dao's suggestion is good, but it's better to ask me than her. She has connections, true, but she's not in the veterinary clinical field after all. To design and equip new devices, she'll have to ask others."
Ding Wen patted his chest, "After breakfast, Little Sen, Xiao Shen, help me take some measurements. I'll design it and make a list of what to upgrade and what equipment needs replacing. Just follow that."
Over the past few days, he had realized that the folks at the first aid station, except maybe for Little Sen being the least wealthy, were all financially secure.
He loved such friends the most—without economic entanglements, their friendship could go a longer way.
