Forest Ranger, starting from Picking Up a Lynx Girl-Chapter 308 - It Can’t Stand It Anymore
Chapter 308 -308 It Can’t Stand It Anymore
Was it because the weather was so cold that their brains had frozen into idiocy?
Jinya looked at Er Niu with an expression that spoke volumes.
Er Niu, having received no reply, turned to look at her with eyes of utmost clarity.
“Don’t you want to?” Er Niu’s tone sounded a bit dejected as she lay down, “It’s true, I’m not very capable, I can’t even catch a rock sheep.”
No, I haven’t even said anything yet, why are you blaming yourself already?
Jinya had never seen such a simple-minded Big Cat, and hurried over to lick its cheek.
“Next time the two-legged beast comes, bring the kid with you, and I’ll let it call you Mom!”
If it dares not to call you that, it’ll get a beating!
With the promise from her bestie, Er Niu foolishly grinned for a while before remembering they had come to patrol their territory and hunt.
Although this mountain was a bit small, it was still Er Niu’s territory.
However, it preferred to hang around the meadow area where catching rabbits, foxes, and ground squirrels was easier.
With some luck, it could even catch a Beishan goat and have a couple of satisfying meals.
There was a small group of Beishan goats active on the little mountain, but the male goats were quite formidable. Er Niu had once thought of hunting Beishan goats, almost costing herself dearly, and dared not try again.
This time, the pair planned to collaborate on a hunt, aiming to catch a Beishan goat for a change of flavor.
But unexpectedly, as they reached the foot of the mountain, they saw that male leopard on the mountain. Was it trying to claim this territory?
Although male snow leopards and female snow leopards’ territories overlap, this was a bit too much!
The two Big Cats hesitated at the foot of the mountain before trying to ascend.
One against one, they couldn’t win.
But two against one, they could at least try, right?
Besides, Er Niu didn’t really like living up in the mountains; she just wanted to catch a Beishan goat to see if it was really that tasty.
If she couldn’t eat it, then so be it.
The taste of wild sheep was good too, as were the wild donkeys and antelopes.
And at the very least, the mouse-rabbits and bunnies could fill their stomachs.
She’s really not picky!
After the male leopard’s tail was out of sight, Er Niu and Jinya decided to follow.
They walked until they could see the Beishan goats, without spotting any trace of the male leopard.
But in the air and on the rocks, the scent of the leopard was impossible to overlook.
Er Niu decisively led Jinya on a detour, approaching the Beishan goats from another side.
“Look, it’s that one.”
Er Niu swallowed, “The rams have very formidable horns, they even hurt when they kick leopards. The ones with smaller horns are ewes, but they run too fast.”
Even though Jinya was not particularly interested in Beishan goats, her hunting skills were a bit better than Er Niu’s.
Back when Mr. Lepus lived beside that douchebag snow leopard up in the mountains, he often hunted mouse-rabbits and other small animals in the rocky areas.
Jinya’s skills were taught by Mr. Lepus and further honed for a long time in the forest with Little Jin, she confidently felt catching a small mountain goat was well within her reach.
Chen Ying and Uncle Tashi didn’t go up the mountain, but the two cunningly monitored Jinya and Er Niu’s movements through a drone from the air. freёnovelkiss.com
Besides, the male leopard that the two Big Cats didn’t see was clearly visible within the drone’s view.
Across from the Beishan goats’ rocky area, the male leopard laid sprawled in a stone trough, its gray and white pattern blending perfectly with the background.
Plus, it was looking down from above, able to clearly see the movements of Er Niu and Jinya.
However, looking up from below, with limited visibility, the two cats failed to detect the male leopard quietly lying not too far away.
“Do you see that ewe? Let’s circle around from this side. I’ll go up top, you go below.”
Er Niu decisively chose the more difficult path.
Its body structure was different from Jinya’s, making it a lot more resistant to falls. A fall from the same height might leave it unscathed, while Jinya would probably need to spend a few days in an emergency station.
Having picked their target, the two cats split up, one going high and the other low, closing in on the ewe that was still absentmindedly digging for grass roots.
The lookout ram on the high ground noticed the approaching lynx.
(What’s that yellow thing, so conspicuous? You think I wouldn’t notice it?)
It was a bit confused, but quickly came to its senses and issued an alarm.
The herd of goats started running between the cliffs.
This herd of Beishan goats was somewhat small, with probably just eleven or twelve altogether.
The targeted ewe lagging at the back of the pack was young and visibly panicked.
During its frantic run, it slipped, nearly tumbling down the slope.
This should have been the perfect opportunity—Jinya pounced out, with Er Niu following suit.
But by some evil twist of fate, after a couple of slippery steps, the goat skewed its body just enough to avoid Jinya’s sharp claws and teeth.
At the same time, Er Niu’s lunge came to nothing.
That’s right, they collided!
Smack! Witnessing this scene, Chen Ying slapped his own face.
Too hard to watch.
On the opposite slope, the male leopard shocked, propped up its body, its pupils dilated: How on earth have you two managed to survive till now?
Having missed their chance, the goats managed to escape a deadly fate.
As Jinya fell to the ground, Er Niu nipped her by the scruff of the neck and held her in an embrace, breaking her fall.
Er Niu protected Jinya with her own body.
Chen Ying shuddered in fear, quickly running up the mountain.
After escaping, the herd of Beishan goats even stopped to look back, seemingly mocking Er Niu and Jinya.
Jinya felt both embarrassed and angry, also worried her new bestie might be injured, her mouth twitching.
At that moment, the male leopard opposite them made a move.
It traveled along the cliffside, within the shadows, its thick footpads silencing the sound of its steps on the stones.
Slowly and steadily, it approached the flock of goats that was still on the lookout for Er Niu and Jinya.
It was too late before they realized, the goat, which had a narrow escape before, ultimately couldn’t save its life.
The sudden appearance of the Snow Leopard sent the Beishan Goat herd into another panicked stampede.
That’s when the unexpected happened.
Two nearly grown kids, vying for the same foothold on a stone, caused the one on the outer edge to lose balance, knocked down by its brother behind. After a miserable cry, the kid tumbled down the slope.
Its final resting place was right beside Er Niu and Jinya.
The cliff wasn’t very tall, but the kid was unlucky—its neck broke against the cliff during the fall, and it was already lifeless when it hit the ground.
“Ow-er?”
“Roar?”
Both cats were stunned; what was this, guarding the slope and waiting for the goats?
They exchanged a look and decided to go and take advantage of the situation.
They had only taken a few steps when they saw the Male Leopard dragging the caught female goat jumping down.
With those skills, Jinya felt it was best to persuade her girlfriend to give up the territory.
They couldn’t win, not at all.
Er Niu was scared inside, but still summoned the courage to stand in front of Jinya, crouching low and watchfully eyeing the Male Leopard.
So it knows how to hunt, what’s the deal? Why show off? o(╥﹏╥)o
Er Niu felt wronged inside. If it hadn’t been born weak and without a mother to teach it, it sure could have caught goats on its own!
Unexpectedly, the Male Leopard placed the doe next to the kid after jumping down and then gave Er Niu a deep look before leaping back up the rock wall, disappearing in a few swift movements.
Chen Ying maneuvered the drone higher and, as expected, saw the Male Leopard hiding behind another stone, quietly watching Er Niu and Jinya below.
“What does it want to do?”
Er Niu turned to ask Jinya.
Jinya opened her mouth but didn’t know what to say.
Forget it, there’s food to eat, and those words wouldn’t make sense to Er Niu anyway.
Jinya went up and started tearing and biting the little goat kid.
The doe was left for Er Niu.
For two reasons.
First, Er Niu was larger than her and needed more food.
Second, it was a gift from the Male Leopard, and Jinya feared that if it took a bite, she’d have to sprint across the snowy plains the next moment.
Er Niu was simple-minded. When Jinya let her eat, she indeed ate heartily without worry.
Watching the ravenous Er Niu from behind a rock, Chen Ying and Uncle Tashi didn’t quite know what to say.
A single kid was just enough for Jinya, but she still left half of it, planning to bring it back for Little Jin to try.
After eating its fill, Er Niu, seeing Jinya preparing a takeaway for Little Jin, thought about it and also picked up the remaining quarter of the goat.
“I’ll take it back for the Two-legged beast; he’s never tried this before.”
Upon hearing this, Jinya’s ears twitched.
Darn, lost to this silly girl!
After spending a long time with Chen and knowing that he wouldn’t eat foreign food, Jinya had gotten used to ignoring the issue of what Two-legged beast ate.
But Er Niu was different.
Whether the Two-legged beast ate or not had nothing to do with whether she brought food to him.
What if, just what if the Two-legged beast couldn’t find food, wouldn’t the food she brought back come in handy then?
Seeing the two cats carrying food and heading back from the drone’s view, Chen didn’t need to think twice about what they were up to.
By the time they carried the food all the way back from there, their teeth would have frozen off.
After assuring Jinya he would take the lamb to Little Jin, Chen Ying and Uncle Tashi mounted their horses and galloped back.
As for the two Big Cats, they sprinted behind the horses, frightening the steeds into racing with the spirit of a derby.
When they reached the outskirts of the Pasture, Er Niu refused to go any further and slammed on the brakes.
Jinya didn’t understand why, but Er Niu explained that the Female Lynx had told her not to get close to the Two-legged beast’s territory, or they would get captured.
Jinya glanced at the tents, then back at Er Niu.
“Don’t be afraid, as long as the Two-legged beast is here, they won’t capture us. But once the Two-legged beast leaves this place, you better stay away.”
Er Niu suddenly lay down in silent thought.
Jinya circled around her a couple of times, a bit anxiously nudging her belly.
“What’s wrong with you? Are you hurt from before? I’ll call the Two-legged beast to come check on you.”
“Don’t, don’t go.”
Er Niu blocked Jinya with its long tail.
“I’m just thinking, he’s going to leave again.”
Er Niu’s voice was a bit melancholic, and her expression somewhat aggrieved.
Jinya opened her mouth but suddenly didn’t know how to respond.
When Little Jin was pulled out of the blankets by Chen Ying, the cat was still lethargic.
“You’re still sleeping, Jinya might be hurt.”
Chen squatted by the bed, and with a gloomy remark, he shocked Little Jin’s fur to stand on end.
“Meow-ow? Hurt, what hurt, where is she?”
While asking, she was ready to run out, but Chen stretched out his hand to stop her.
“Go eat first. Jinya asked me to bring this back for you.”
Little Jin anxiously tried to break free from Chen’s hold but didn’t dare to struggle too mightily, fearing to hurt him, and let him carry her out of the tent.
Stepping out of the warm indoors, Little Jin sneezed violently.
Regaining composure, she looked up and saw Jinya and Er Niu quickly approaching along the edge of the tent.
