GREED: ALL FOR WHAT?-Chapter 2131: Giving Up.
She wants to draw with her divine flesh and be at peace with it. Unfortunately, her inner demon is not willing to make things easy for her.
Her inner demon is the manifestation of the will of the divine flesh. It wants to turn her into the true image of justice or become her and execute justice for her.
She was able to stave off those two outcomes for now, but she is already tired.
She said to herself, "This is it. I will go no further."
She has already made up her mind to remain at rank 4 forever. Things are already bad for her at rank 4. She can't imagine getting through ranks 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. Even if it is possible for her to get through them, she doesn't want to suffer anymore.
All she wants is to serve as a captain for the rest of her life in this town or any other place that needs her. And she hopes that when she dies, she will find peace in the kingdom of the god of justice.
With this thought on her mind, she fell asleep on her desk.
In the meantime, Legion was receiving a tour of the prison. The prison wasn't what he thought it was.
The prison itself was very long. It was 100 meters long, but it was still small and cramped. It is because instead of jail cells and rooms, prisoners are stored in lockers.
There is a walkway in the middle of the prison. On both sides of this walkway are two giant drawers that fill up the whole space. The prisoners are kept in these giant drawers in a state of suspended animation.
The prisoners are made to lie down in a drawer that looks like a coffin. The coffin is sealed, and something is done to put the prisoners contained within asleep. Then the coffin is pushed into the locker and locked with a key.
Both sides of the walkway are full of sealed coffins, sealed and locked like feet in shoes. There truly isn't any space for the prisoners to move in. They are completely cramped.
All of these were demonstrated to him by the current guard. This guard's name is Janus.
Janus said proudly to him after showing off, "The prisoners are forced to sleep, and the security is tight. This way, it is nearly impossible for them to escape. So being a guard is the easiest job ever."
Legion said in awe, "This is all impressive. The prisoners are more like files being stored in a cabinet, not the unpleasant troublemakers that I expected them to be."
Janus laughed heartily. He rubbed his large belly as he laughed a throaty and unpleasant laugh.
Janus was big and fat. His belly was huge. Even his shirt couldn't contain his belly. His figure interested Legion a bit as they wondered if his shape was natural or due to mutation of divine flesh.
He said, "We are godclads, not mortals. Godclads are too dangerous. If we don't do this to them, we will need too much manpower and a lot more investment in infrastructure to keep them imprisoned. It just isn't worth it."
"Rather than waste money and time to keep criminals, we should just kill them. But we didn't kill them. We put them to sleep with a divine artifact and make them dream in hopes that they will be rehabilitated. They are lucky to have us."
The two of them resumed their walk down the walkway. Janus explained many things along the way.
"The dream looks like a real world. We use the dream to punish them and also make them rethink their ways."
"The dream is created by a divine artifact. This divine artifact takes what it needs to run from the prisoners themselves. So it doesn't cost anything to run at all."
Legion asked, "Has the dream ever rehabilitated anyone?"
Janus shook his head, which made the jowls of flesh around his neck shake too.
He said, "It does happen, but it is very rare. It is very difficult to be rehabilitated because anyone that comes here usually loses their mind soon after. Once they lose their minds, it is nearly impossible for them to recover."
"Even if they recover, it is unlikely that they will see the errors of their ways and repent. Most of them just use the dreams to indulge themselves."
Legion said in understanding, "Not many of them want to be rehabilitated in the first place, so very few will be rehabilitated."
Jason nodded and led him away again. After the tour, the two of them spent the remainder of Janus's shift together. Then they were replaced by someone else.
The person that came to replace them was very happy when he heard that Legion would be replacing him. Even though being a prison guard is the easiest job to have as a lamp bearer, the man wasn't happy with it.
Only someone like Janus, who was lazy, fat, and doesn't want to fight, or someone like Legion, who likes easy work and free money, is glad to be a prison guard and do nothing for 12 hours every day.
On the way home, Legion thought back on what they had seen and experienced earlier.
Legion-6 said, "It goes without saying that we are stealing that heart in Sheckel's head. It is a powerful divine artifact, and it likes us, so we should have it."
Legion-7 agreed. "The heart does like us. It is practically begging us to take it. But it will take more than affection to get the heart. An epic being is not so easy to kill."
Legion-9 wasn't so concerned. "Easy or not, we should be able to kill her and take the heart from her if we reach rank 3 in all our pathways."
Legion-12 said in agreement, "No matter how powerful she is, if she only has one pathway and it is the pathway of justice, then we should be able to defeat her when we have four pathways at rank 3."
Legion-1 added another goal to their agenda, "We shouldn't forget about the prison. I believe that the prison will be critical in turning the lamp bearers upside down."
