Harry Potter and the Secret Treasures-Chapter 1248: No Comparison
Chapter 1248: No Comparison
“What is that?”
“They’re definitely owls,” said Ron hoarsely. “And there are four of them, for sure.”
“One for each of us,” said Hermione in a terrified whisper. “Oh no … oh no…”
She gripped Evan’s arm tightly, using a lot of force.
The owls were flying directly at the Burrow, four handsome tawnies, each of which, it became clear as they flew lower over the path leading up to the house, was carrying a large square envelope, and everyone was nervous.
To be honest, Evan was a bit nervous too. This was the first time he thought about his results since the exams.
He wasn’t too worried about passing, but how many ‘Outstandings’ would he get?
Evan thought he did fairly average in History of Magic, and as for Divination, that was purely guesswork.
Hermione squealed again and there was a commotion in front of the window.
Mrs. Weasley squeezed past them and opened the kitchen window.
One, two, three, four, the owls soared through it and landed on the table in a neat line. All four of them lifted their right legs.
“Okay, children, look at the names on the envelopes,” said Mrs. Weasley tremblingly. “Ron, let me see your grades…”
The first letter brought in was Evan’s. He took the envelope down.
Evan didn’t look at it right away. Beside him, Harry and Ron were busy untying their letters with fumbling fingers.
Hermione’s hands were shaking so much she was making her whole owl tremble.
In the end, it was Evan who helped her detach the envelope.
“Thank you, Evan. I don’t dare to look. Can you check for me…?” said Hermione, but before Evan could answer, she quickly took the envelope back from him. “No, I’ll do it myself.”
Nobody in the kitchen spoke, everyone was looking at their own results.
Evan slit the envelope open and unfolded the parchment inside. It clearly read:
ORDINARY WIZARDING LEVEL RESULTS
Pass Grades: Fail Grades:
Outstanding (O) Poor (P)
Exceeds Expectations (E) Dreadful (D)
Acceptable (A) Troll (T)
Evan Mason has achieved:
Astronomy E
Evan’s heart sank suddenly. His Astronomy grade was only “Exceeds Expectations.”
But that was understandable — he hadn’t spent much time on this subject, only vaguely learning the positions of the stars.
He had often used Hermione’s notes for his Astronomy homework.
Though it was an unfortunate start, Evan continued to read on.
Care of Magical Creatures O
Charms O
Defense Against the Dark Arts O
Ancient Runes O
Not bad — four consecutive ‘Outstanding’ grades, which was in line with Evan’s expectations and made him feel relieved.
Especially in Ancient Runes, Charms, and Defense Against the Dark Arts, Evan’s performance couldn’t just be described as ‘Outstanding.’ If the exam results allowed for more than just grades, the examiners would have written long notes praising his extraordinary abilities. His performance was beyond what was typically expected of a wizard. ṙåƝOᛒƐ𝐬
Not just for the O.W.L.s — even at the N.E.W.T. level, no one would have performed as Evan did.
But then, he only got an Acceptable (A) in Divination, which was just enough to pass.
It seemed that the prophecies he had made up hadn’t won Professor Marchbanks’ approval.
He could already sense this from the way she looked at him after the exam.
The fact that he passed at all was likely an act of leniency. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm
Evan felt that he neither possessed the “Inner Eye” required for Divination nor had the potential to become a charlatan.
What stood out the most in his years of studying Divination was, oddly enough, the few minutes he spent airing out at the top of the tower with Gabrielle.
Then, they had swapped clothes and identities and went to the second task of the Triwizard Tournament…
It was no surprise that next term; he would be saying goodbye to Divination, which did not seem to be a bad thing.
Continuing down, Evan saw that his Herbology, Potions, and Transfiguration grades were all O.
Surprisingly, he also got an O in History of Magic, a subject he thought he had performed just average in.
Out of the ten subjects Evan took, he received eight ‘Outstandings’, one ‘Exceeds Expectations’, and one ‘Acceptable’. That was an excellent result.
He felt that he had performed very well. After all, he skipped a year to take the exam and had one year less to study than Harry and the others. In addition, over the past two years, Evan had spent less and less time on his schoolwork, instead focusing on the ancient magic books he found in the Black family library, as well as the complex Ancient Runes and advanced magic. Right before the exams, he had also spent over a month on an adventure.
To still achieve such results, anyone would marvel at Evan’s abilities and wouldn’t care about the fact that he hadn’t gotten ‘Outstandings’ in Divination and Astronomy…
But Evan quickly realized he was wrong — there was someone beside him who did care.
When it came to exam results, Hermione was a perfectionist.
Evan tilted his head to look at the parchment in her hand. It was all ‘Outstandings’…
He thought it would be best not to disturb Hermione for the time being and let her digest the good news alone.
Evan looked up and saw that Harry and Ron also had happy expressions on their faces.
Obviously, both of them had done quite well, or at least better than expected.
“Only failed Divination and History of Magic, and who cares about them?” said Ron. “Here, let me see your grades — swap —”
He placed his results on the table, and Mrs. Weasley, Ginny, and Fleur gathered around.
Evan glanced down at Ron’s grades. There were no ‘Outstandings’ there, and most of them were just ‘Acceptable’.
The best one was Care of Magical Creatures, where he got an ‘Exceeds Expectations.’
It was true — without comparisons, there was no disappointment.
Compared to Ron’s grades, Evan’s were simply unbelievably good.
He turned to look at Harry’s results. Out of the nine subjects, Harry had failed Divination with a ‘Poor’ (P). He got ‘Outstanding’ in Defense Against the Dark Arts and Care of Magical Creatures. For the rest, aside from an ‘Acceptable’ in History of Magic (A), he received ‘Exceeds Expectations’ (E) in all other subjects.
Mrs. Weasley looked at Evan’s results and then carefully at Ron’s grades.
“Not as good as Evan’s, but well done!” she said with satisfaction, ruffling Ron’s hair. “Seven O.W.L.s, that’s more than Fred and George got together.”
For most wizards, just passing their exams was all that mattered.
“Your results are nothing short of remarkable,” said Fleur, eyeing Evan’s results critically before finally exclaiming, “Ten certificates! Sometimes I can’t ‘elp but wonder ‘ow your brain works.”
“As long as you’re willing to spend time and study hard, anyone can do it,” Evan replied.
The secret was to apply for a Time-Turner and use it to endlessly go back and forth in time.
“I’ll write to Gabrielle — she’s been eagerly awaiting your results,” Fleur added.
“Hermione? How did you do?” said Ginny tentatively, for Hermione still hadn’t said anything, she was staring at Evan’s results in a daze, holding her own grades tightly in her hands.
“Not bad,” said Hermione in a small voice.
After confirming her own results, she no longer seemed as eager as before.
Because her results were so good, she now felt too shy to mention them…
