Chapter 69: A Horrible Disease
The moment Adam asked this question, Keira’s eyes opened widely.
A cold sweat ran down her cheek as her fingers instinctively tightened around the feathered cloak draped over her small frame. She swallowed hard, forcing herself upright, though her limbs trembled from more than just exhaustion.
It was as if she just remembered about her sister, as the shock from nearly dying twice was still very much active, but, she calmed herself down quickly, as she began to recall what had happen to Adam.
"I...I was chasing after her."
Keira murmured.
Her words were soft but very clear as she continued.
"I tried to catch up... I really did, but then I saw her."
Keira’s hands clenched into a fist as the memory clawed its way back.
"Nyla...she was surrounded. Those damn Antment, they were everywhere. She fought, but there were too many, and as a result, she was easily overwhelmed. I..I couldn’t reach her in time."
Said Keira, as Adam listened calmly.
"Is she?...
He asked, assuming the worst, given her tone.
But those though quickly left when Keira shook her head so quickly it almost looked frantic.
"No, No!... She is alive; that much I am at least sure of."
Adam exhaled, but the tension in his shoulders remained, but he also had to ask.
"How do you know?"
"I mean, those things were not so merciful the first time around, you know."
To answer this, however, Keira looked in front of her; the large hole was still there, then she looked back at Adam replying as such.
"Because... I saw her and the others went that hole over there."
Keira explained while gripping the feathered cloak tighter.
Upon hearing this, Adam turned to the direction she was pointing at, but his mind was focused on something else.
"Others? So she wasn’t alone?"
Keira just shook her head while saying.
"No, she wasn’t alone...I don’t know who took her, but that bastard was strong."
"By the time I reach here... She was already unconscious... and that person already had her in his clutches."
Adam’s eyes sharpened more, something wasn’t adding up.
"Can you tell me how this person looks...was it really a dude, or maybe it was a woman?"
"I don’t know... They were wearing a long black robe, and their face was completely hidden behind a strange white and black masks."
Keira said in annoyance as she bit her lip.
"I don’t know who they were... but they just picked her up and took her, and by the time I reached, they looked like they were about to leave, but I did catch some words, but it was kind of distorted... But I think it is a dude behind that mask."
"But the weird thing was what he said, like he was expecting Nyla... I think he said something along the lines of... "How curious...Yarquela was right. She did survive."
"And the next thing I know, he took Nyla inside that hole, are the army of Antmen all followed behind. It was almost like he was their leader or something."
But the moment, Adam heard that name, his voice, ran cold, as he said.
"Wait...wait... did you just say...Yarquela?"
"Ha... Yeah why... you know who that is?"
Keira asked, given Adam’s reaction, that this so-called Yarquela was bad news, although it was the first time she herself had heard of the name.
But Adam quickly brushed it off by saying.
"Don’t worry about it, I will save your Sister, although I am confused. How the hell did that thing end up attacking you is what I want to know. Hell, what the hell even is that thing to begin with?"
The moment asked this question, Keira had a sad face, as she began to explain.
"Well... before I explain how I ended up being attacked by that thing...
Keira’s voice trailed for a moment, her expression darkening.
"You should know...it wasn’t just a thing like I called it, that man used to be a loyal member of the clan gate guards... That thing...it is an infected."
She looked away, eyes fixed on the dead body of the Malformed wolf, and she closed her eyes.
Then, opening them back up, turning to Adam to explain, as she said...continuing her explanation.
"The virus has three stages. The first is Seeding. That’s when the virus lies dormant inside the body. Most people don’t even realize they’re infected yet. But slowly, it begins suppressing their natural abilities... or worse, puts them into a coma, and that’s when we know it is too late."
A cold chill crept into her voice when she explained this, and then she moved on to the next stage of the Bloom Virus.
"Then comes Stage Two: Spread. By that point, it is already too late. The host is technically dead in body, or rather becomes a prisoner in their own body. The virus feeds off their life force but anchors the soul as it starts to weaken the body even further, hijacking the brain functions. And that is when an individual stops being themselves, as they no longer have control over their bodies."
Said Keira, as her hands trembled slightly beneath the feathered shroud, but she continued.
This was what has been plaguing her people for weeks.
But she pushed on, explaining the last bits of it.
"Then there’s the final stage: Bloom. That is when the virus matures. You’ll know it’s reached that point when you see the flower burst through the infected person’s eye. By then, its roots have already spread throughout the veins and arteries, taking over everything. The body becomes a husk...and the flower just keeps growing... it also take control of it, to defend itself, given it still has a purpose even after that point."
She paused, her voice just little bits away from being a low whisper.
"The bloom eventually drains every last drop of essence from the body. Once it’s done, more of those flowers sprout across the host’s skin... and then detach, floating off into the air like spores. No one knows where they go. But...
She swallowed, her throat tight.
"My mother once told me... it doesn’t leave anything behind. Not even your soul."
"And worst of all, there is no cure for it. We have tried everything. But the moment you try to remove the seed, the infected dies instantly for some reason, like the seed itself becomes their new life source. Ironic, isn’t it? What keeps you alive only exists to kill you later; that’s what makes the Bloom so scary."
