Chapter 79 - Sudden Assault

Shuri was shocked to see Sigmund standing there.

"Dr. Lee, what a pleasant surprise to see you here. I didn't know you're helping out in this shelter," Sigmund said as he approached her.

"I have been volunteering here for more than a year, and it's my first time seeing you here, Dr. Sung," Shuri replied, trying to mask her surprise and suspicion.

She didn't believe it was a coincidence and couldn't understand why Sigmund was there.

Was he following her?

But how could he possibly have known she was coming to the shelter?

Shuri had lots of questions and began to grow even more suspicious of Sigmund.

"Oh, I didn't expect both of you to know each other," Gina said, breaking the tension.

"Did you introduce Dr. Sung to come here, Gina?" Shuri asked, her voice steady but inquisitive.

"Jacob and I work as interns at the Sung Medical Hospital, and we met Dr. Sung there. We mentioned to him that we're volunteering in this shelter, and he got interested, so we brought him along," Gina explained.

"I see... such a coincidence," Shuri muttered slowly, still feeling uncomfortable.

Jacob added, "Dr. Sung might be the director of the psychiatric department, but he has surgical experience and knows a bit about taking care of animals, right, Dr. Sung?"

"Yes, I know a little about veterinary care. But nothing compared to how experienced Dr. Lee is," Sigmund said, his tone humble.

Shuri didn't want to continue with small talk and decided to steer the conversation towards work. "Alright, let's start getting the dogs checked. We have a lot to do today."

Gina and Jacob nodded, quickly moving to carry the sick dogs and cats out of their cages and onto the examination table for check-ups and treatment.

Sigmund stood beside Shuri, ready to assist her.

Shuri put on her gloves and began the check-up with a professional demeanor. She was so focused on her tasks at hand that she didn't notice Sigmund had been watching her intently the entire time he was assisting her.

However, Shuri had to admit that with Sigmund's assistance, the process became much smoother and quicker. He seemed to anticipate her needs even before she gave him instructions. If it weren't for her suspicions, she would have been more grateful for his help.

They continued working through the animals, providing vaccinations, medications, and treatments with the efficiency and care of seasoned professionals, and after more than an hour, they finished attending to all the animals.

Shuri removed her gloves and looked around at the team. "Great work, everyone. The animals are in good hands thanks to all of you."

Gina and Jacob smiled, pleased with their contribution.

"Thank you, Dr. Lee. I've learned a lot from you today," Sigmund said.

Shuri nodded, still wary but professional. "Thank you for your assistance, Dr. Sung."

Gina began to transport the smaller dogs and cats back into their kennels and enclosures, leaving Shuri in the room with Jacob and Sigmund.

As Shuri busied herself wiping down the examination table, she caught a glimpse of Sigmund leaning in close to Jacob, whispering something in his ear.

Her curiosity was piqued, but she brushed it off, focusing on the task at hand.

Moments later, Sigmund picked up the leashes of the remaining large dogs and walked them out of the room, seemingly to return them to their kennels.

He glanced back briefly and smiled mysteriously at Shuri through the door.

Shuri raised an eyebrow at the scene but decided not to dwell on it.

She continued cleaning and packing, her mind focused on the tasks at hand.

Suddenly, she heard Jacob murmuring behind her.

"Give her pain... Subdue her..."

She spun around, her heart pounding in her chest.

To her shock, she saw Jacob clutching a short surgical knife. His movements were disturbingly slow and mechanical, like a marionette controlled by invisible strings.

His eyes were vacant and glassy, devoid of any recognition or emotion.

"Jacob, what are you doing?" Shuri called out.

But before she could react, Jacob dashed toward her, raising the knife. Shuri dodged to the side, but not quickly enough.

The blade grazed her arm, and she felt a sharp sting as blood stained her white coat.

"Ah!" Shuri gasped, the pain searing through her arm.

Gritting her teeth, her mind raced to process the situation.

Jacob was clearly not in his right state of mind.

She tried to call out to Jacob, hoping to snap him out of his daze. "Jacob, snap out of it!"

Jacob's expression remained vacant, his movements eerily precise as he advanced on her again.

Shuri was in a dilemma; she didn't want to hurt Jacob, but she understood that if she were to remain passive, he would hurt her.

After the kidnapping incident in her past life that separated her and Noran, Shuri had taken precautions and taken up self-defense lessons from Karlene.

Recalling her training, she knew how to disable an attacker without causing permanent harm.

As Jacob lunged at her once more, Shuri sidestepped and used her uninjured arm to deflect his attack.

She grabbed a syringe filled with sedative from the nearby table, her mind focused and clear despite the adrenaline surging through her veins.

"Jacob, please, stop this!" Shuri pleaded one last time, but his empty eyes showed no recognition, his movements robotic and unyielding.

As Jacob advanced, his hand raised to strike, the dogs outside suddenly erupted into loud, frantic barking.

The noise seemed to penetrate his mind, breaking through the fog of control for a brief moment. Jacob's expression flickered, confusion replacing the blank stare.

Seizing the moment, Shuri moved swiftly. With practiced precision, she twisted Jacob's arm and jabbed the syringe into his neck, pressing the plunger to inject the sedative into his bloodstream.

Jacob's movements slowed, his body swaying as the drug took effect. He collapsed to the floor, unconscious.

Shuri stood over him, her chest heaving with exertion and fear. She clutched her bleeding arm, the pain now throbbing more insistently.

She bent down to check on the unconscious Jacob, her focus entirely on his condition. The loud barking of the dogs outside filled the air, masking any other sounds. She didn't notice a figure silently entering the room.

As she continued to examine Jacob, a sudden, sharp jab pierced her back.

She gasped, the pain searing through her.

Her vision blurred, and she struggled to stay conscious.

"Who...?"

Desperately, she tried to turn and see who it was, but her body betrayed her. She managed only a fleeting glimpse of a shadowy figure before darkness began to engulf her.

As her vision faded completely, she thought she saw a familiar face, but the sedative took full effect, and she collapsed.

Sigmund stood over Shuri's limp body on the floor. He slipped the used syringe back into his coat pocket, a sinister smirk curling his lips.

Kneeling down, he gently touched her warm cheek with his finger.

"I didn't expect you to put up a fight, but I still got you..."

As he was about to reach out to lift her into his arms, his body suddenly froze.

An eerie, chilling presence descended upon him, sending a shiver down his spine.

Then, he felt a cold breath on the back of his neck.

"Don't touch her," a cold, menacing voice commanded.

Time seemed to slow down.

Sigmund's eyes widened in shock as he looked down and saw that Shuri was no longer lying before him.

Panic set in as he scrambled to understand what was happening.

He turned around, his heart pounding.

Standing there was a tall, imposing man with piercing, ice-blue eyes, cradling Shuri protectively in his arms. The man's gaze was filled with a deadly intensity that made Sigmund's blood run cold.

Sigmund instantly recognized him—it was Noran Kingston, Shuri's fiancé.

The name alone carried weight, but seeing the man in person, exuding such a powerful aura, made it all the more daunting.

"What did you do to Rin?" His voice was as cold and sharp as a blade.

Sigmund swallowed hard, his throat dry.

He had never seen Noran up close before, and the sheer power and presence the man exuded were overwhelming.

His instinct told him this was not someone to be trifled with, but he was confident that he could handle Noran by brainwashing him with his power.

Channeling his ability, Sigmund commanded in a firm voice, "Mr. Kingston, give Dr. Lee to me."

The atmosphere grew tense as his power attempted to take hold.

Sigmund sneered when Noran took a step closer, seemingly succumbing to the brainwashing.

But just as quickly, Sigmund felt a sudden, sharp pain in his stomach.

Before he knew it, his body flew back, slamming into the wall.

He gasped in shock and pain, struggling to comprehend what had happened.

Looking up, his eyes widened at the sight of Noran, who was glaring coldly at him, his expression a mask of controlled fury.

"You dare covet Rin?" Noran's voice was deadly calm, each word dripping with icy resolve. "If you ever come near her again, I won't be so forgiving."

Seeing that Shuri was hurt, Noran didn't waste any more time on Sigmund.

He turned and carried her out of the room, his protective hold on her never wavering.

Sigmund sat there in shock for a while, the throbbing pain in his stomach a stark reminder of his failure. Slowly, his lips curled into a sneer.

"Heh! Another one who is immune to my power?" he muttered to himself.

"This couple... Haha... Hahaha! How interesting!"

Suddenly, he burst into laughter, the sound echoing through the empty room, the thrill of the challenge igniting a twisted excitement within him.
