“Alright. Fa Cai will protect you from now on.” Liu Yi placed the kitten in Gao Ming’s arms. “Let it chase away all of your nightmares.”

“I don’t think it can even chase away a mouse.” Even though Gao Ming said that, he still reached out to pat the kitty’s small head.

“I’ve bought many things. I’ll cook many dishes for you tonight.” Liu Yi washed her hands and entered the kitchen. Gao Ming used the old paper boxes in the house to make a simple cat bed before going to help Liu Yi in the kitchen. When he opened his eyes in the hospital, Gao Ming didn’t think he’d have this life. Due to Liu Yi’s appearance, his resistance towards this reality lowered. He was slowly walking away from the influence of that nightmare.

At the dining table, Gao Ming was visibly better than before. Liu Yi told him about the stories that had happened between them. With Liu Yi’s help, Gao Ming’s lonely world was filled with love, colours and joy. It was like a wandering boat finding a shore. They were alone but had each other.

After dinner, Liu Yi took Gao Ming for a walk in the neighbourhood. As they walked through the old buildings, they talked about nothing. Then, they rushed to the supermarket to buy some pet stuff for Fa Cai. When they returned home, it was already 10 pm. As Liu Yi used the shower and Gao Ming trained Fa Cai to use the litter box, Gao Ming’s phone vibrated.

Gao Ming clicked on the phone and sighed in relief. It was a message from Immortal Pharma. He had passed the selection. He was requested to be at Immortal Pharma’s Third Research Lab at 3 pm tomorrow for further testing.

“Finally, good news.”

Gao Ming’s worry faded away as he played with Fa Cai. He read some literature for the test tomorrow.

“Gao Ming! Can you help me grab my pyjama? It’s the black one in the left cupboard!” Hearing Liu Yi’s voice, Gao Ming opened the cupboard. He looked through the clothes before he found the ‘simple’ black pyjama.

With his cheeks burning, he reached out to touch it. The material was silky. Among all the pyjamas, this had the least amount of fabric. It was hidden in the deepest part of the cupboard.

“Did you find it?”

Gao Ming picked it up and jogged to the bathroom door. He held up the pyjama and turned around. “Is this it?”

Before Gao Ming heard a reply, he felt a pull on his arm that yanked him into the bathroom.

Gao Ming’s hair stood up. He whipped his head around and saw Liu Yi grinning at him as her prank had succeeded.

“You… Quickly put some clothes on before you catch a cold.” Gao Ming tossed the pyjama to Liu Yi and ran to the window to look out at the night. His blood boiled. Gao Ming took a few deep breaths and prepared to head to bed.

“You just came in from outside. You are not allowed to sleep before showering.” It sounded like Liu Yi only suggested the walk to get Gao Ming to shower.

Gao Ming turned around. Liu Yi was in a simple black pyjama. He immediately escaped into the bathroom, stunning Liu Yi.

Gao Ming took a cold shower to calm himself down. When he was with Liu Yi, his memory of the nightmare would be covered by the joy of the world. Reality was trying to heal him. Everything Liu Yi was out of kindness in her heart, but Gao Ming didn’t seem to want to heal fully. He still wanted to figure out who had hurt him so badly. This was very important to him.

Gao Ming returned to his corner after he had his shower. He faced the wall and thought about things. He only slept when the sun was coming up.

At noon, after Gao Ming fed Fa Cai, he grabbed something to eat and headed to Immortal Pharma’s Third Lab.

Xin Lu’s sun was blinding. Gao Ming was still unused to it after being comatose for so long. He walked in the shadows of the buildings. He followed the map on his phone and came to the backdoor of a large warehouse in Xin Lu Countryside. There was no sign around to suggest this place was even related to Immortal Pharma.

“Have I been scammed?”

He was often tricked and lied to in his nightmares. He believed it was because he was too weak. He touched the knife in his pocket. He didn’t want to hurt anyone. The knife made him more secure. He found the backdoor and keyed in the password given to him. The heavy door slowly opened. The chill hit him. The old warehouse had many futuristic machines inside.

“Please wear the communicator on the table and all the testing devices.”

The warehouse was empty. The voice came from a giant black box in the middle of the lab table.

Gao Ming walked to the black box. When he saw the black band on the table, he felt it was very familiar. He put it on without any instructions. When he tested the band, the warehouse door opened again. The other testers who passed the first selection walked in. There were 13 of them, including Gao Ming. They were of all genders and ages.

“You have 20 minutes to read the rules and get to know each other. Then, you’ll take a vehicle to the test location. Remember. The longer you can hold on, the greater the reward!” The voice from the box was genderless. The box was covered in strange patterns. It looked like an altar.

“Hello. My name is Xu Yajing. I’m a gaming host from L Streaming Platform. I’ve played many horror games. You can ask me if you encounter any problems.” The girl had a cute face. She looked very experienced. “This is my fourth time applying. They finally approved me. The information about the test is very limited on the internet. However, one thing is certain. We’ll face many tests about humanity. I hope we can all work together to reach the end.”

“Okay.” Touching the black band, a middle-aged man answered. He had on a pair of black-rimmed glasses. He looked like a scholar.

“Handsome uncle, why did you take this test? You don’t look like you lack money.” Xu Yajing was very extroverted.

“My child wants to participate, and since I was worried about him, I registered with him. However, I was selected, but he was not.” The man showed the wedding ring on his finger. “My name is Tang Qing, a prison guard from Hen Shan Penitentiary.”
