Chapter 27: All hope is lost?

The Extremats cast a stern look at the superheroes now, who were still shocked.

"Honestly," the Extremat who had brutally murdered Molten Vigil said, "fighting us is a waste of energy. Our technology is from the future. Nothing ever seen. We may not possess powers, but we are far stronger than you clowns."

Dan was breathing heavily now. He was also sweating, his gaze shifting occasionally from the high-tech guns the villains were holding to their faces, which seemed ominous.

"Who's next?" the second Extremat said. "Who wants to die next?"

Dan had to ask, "Can't we surrender?"

Royal Cloak cast him a stern look for saying that.

The Extremat smiled. "You see, I'm a truthful creature. Not only me but my brother also. What is the use in deceiving you to surrender when, in the end, we will later defeat you?"

He paused and twisted his neck sideways.

CRAKK-KK-KK!

It sounded like his neck was breaking, but it wasn't. Like his throat was disengaging and crumbling down his neck to his lungs.

But it wasn't.

For a second there, Dan had thought that it was, and for that brief moment, he had sort of been elated.

"We fight with nobility. We don't take corners or do something that, after victory, we will know we didn't deserve it. We want to conquer valiantly and with an open mind so that when we celebrate, deep down, we know that we deserve all the praise. It's like not writing a book and being credited as the author. Deep down, you'll know you don't deserve the praise."

'Deep,' Axel thought.

Suddenly, they seemed like good guys, and for a moment there, he believed that.

'They will kill us all.'

"You guys are in luck that we are even exchanging words with you," the first Extremat said. "We are more, actually, but the others went to destroy two cities, leaving us to guard our base."

He laughed now.

"Seriously, I was expecting a competition, being that we are the weakest of the Extremats."

Axel gasped.

'Being that we are the weakest of the Extremats...'

'We're cooked.'

He was tense now. They all were, actually. The words had crept fear into his bones. All the bravery left in him was suddenly gone. Not one bit remaining. All the 'wanting to battle,' the 'I will fight till my last breath'—all gone.

Hell!

He himself was currently out of breath.

He could hardly breathe now.

The Extremats paused and waited patiently for about ten seconds. Seeing that none of them would budge and fight irritated them.

"Scared superheroes," the first Extremat said.

"Well, I guess we'll have to make you fight by force."

Axel didn't see it coming. In fact, if someone had told him the day before that a bulky clenched fist would lace itself and enter the side of his jaw, he wouldn't have believed it. Even if he had been told that, due to that punch, he would hit his back on the ceiling and fall so hard onto the ground, he would have said it was an alluring fairytale.

Well, the above-mentioned was happening to him now. He was down, on the floor, his face bloody, weak, and out of breath.

He had been punched in the side of his jaw, thrown up to the ceiling, cracking it, and then falling hard onto the floor.

They went at the others, not even slowing down. Their breathing was so silent that Axel wondered if they had even done the act at all.

They punched Pierce, slapped Iron Root, kicked Aura Strike in the stomach, and used the back of their gun to hit Astra Hound on his forehead. And then, they shocked Axel. Not only Axel but everyone.

They murdered Luminara.

It was a brutal action.

The two of them held their guns and blasted her brain out of her skull and then her head.

Lifelessly, she slumped to the ground.

Royal Cloak opened his mouth in shock. He was paralyzed from the sight. He could hardly move himself to breathe.

Massacre!

The Extremats continued, and soon, one of them gave a blast from his high-tech gun.

It immediately killed two superheroes.

And so, Silken Veil and Nova Champion were gone.

"No!" Dan shouted. "Stop this madness! Don't kill us! Let us just leave. Please! Spare our lives and take over Superpolis while we live, please!"

The Extremats paused and looked at Dan, the expressions on their faces indifferent. To them, a tiny mosquito had just spoken. The words meant nothing, absolutely nothing at all.

They were about to kill him too when Ember Lancer threw heat-like things from her hands. They caught it and, with a grimace, shot her in the chest. Ember Lancer tried to suppress it, to stop the bluish thing wrapped like an electric current coming out of it, but it was nothing. Nothing at all.

And so, she couldn't control it or suppress it either.

It spiraled through her chest and left her dead.

Axel was stunned at that. That was apparently the last straw, or at least the obvious one.

They didn't relent, the vicious Extremats. They didn't stop one bit. They were at the superheroes, who were now fighting back. Even Dan was starting to throw them punches now.

But it wasn't enough to stop them. It wasn't enough to stop the almighty Extremats.

They clenched their fists, and that made their hands into daggers (with the help of their high-tech technology).

SWOOSH!

The first Extremat had chopped Gearforged's head off, which fell instantly on the floor.

Axel was about to puke now. He thought Superpolis was safe. Apparently, this was worse than the apocalypse-looking Earth.

THOOOSHHKHHHH!

Ferroshift's head had also fallen off his neck. This time, it was the second Extremat that cut it off.

Axel felt like crying. He didn't know superheroes could die. They always won.

But then he realized—these dead superheroes weren't the main characters in his story.

It was then he truly realized.

He was the main character.

This was his story.

He was the one to save Khaos Realm and Earth from their impending doom.

And now, the lost bravery returned to him.

It was time to be a hero!
