Chapter 2494: Betrayal

“There’s no need to be so angry, Monster Lord. I come in peace.” A figure slowly emerged from the hole in the tent.

Manager Pi and the War Priest narrowed their eyes. Even they would have struggled to deal with the Monster Lord’s earlier attack, but this fellow overcame it with such ease. This told them how powerful he was.

Hm, he’s wearing our uniform. Whose subordinate is this? Why don’t we know about him if he possesses such strength?

They scanned the intruder from head to toe. The latter was astonishingly emaciated for a monster, and he wore a mask that covered his appearance. It was also impossible to figure out his background from his aura and cultivation technique.

Needless to say, the intruder was Zu An. He was shocked when he saw the people inside the tent. He hadn’t expected them to be familiar faces. Manager Pi was one thing, but he hadn’t known that the War Priest served the Monster Lord as well.

“I find it hard to believe that someone who refuses to reveal his identity bears no ill will.” The Monster Lord was alarmed, gazing sharply at Zu An. He hadn’t put his full strength into the earlier attack, such that a fair number of top-notch experts could have dealt with it, but he couldn’t think of anyone who could neutralize it so quietly.

“Skin is superficial. I didn’t mean to deceive you, and I seek your understanding. I came here today to discuss your future.” Zu An had put on a mask because the Monster Lord didn’t recognize him in the future, so he figured he had to not reveal his true face now.

“Our master doesn’t need the likes of you to discuss his future. Men, capture this scoundrel!” Manager Pi roared.

Monster guards rushed up and surrounded Zu An.

“Step down!” the Monster Lord suddenly roared. That surprised the guards, but they quickly bowed and backed off.

Manager Pi didn’t look awkward despite having his order superseded. Instead, he exclaimed with a fawning smile, “Our master is wise and farsighted.” He then glared at Zu An. “Our master has given you a chance to talk! You better cherish it!”

The War Priest rolled his eyes. This bootlicker.

The Monster Lord, however, was satisfied with Manager Pi’s bootlicking. He turned to Zu An and said, “Tell me what your earlier words meant.”

Zu An first cast a glance at the crowd before saying, “What I’m about to say might be improper. Would it be fine to speak openly in front of them too?”

The Monster Lord could roughly guess what Zu An was going to say. “It’s fine. Go on.” He wasn't a patient man, but he thought that the intruder was strong enough to be worth listening to his words.

Zu An calmly spoke, “The Incestuous King’s army has been destroyed, and the Lord of Slaughter has lost his most loyal subordinates. This is a good opportunity for you to take his position.”

The War Priest, Manager Pi, and the others turned to look at the Monster Lord. They were ready to kill the intruder on the spot as soon as the Monster Lord gave the signal.

The Monster Lord coldly sneered, “What a crude way of sowing dissent. Did you think it would work?”

Zu An smiled. The Monster Lord’s decision to not kill him right away spoke volumes. “You misunderstand. It doesn’t matter whether my motive is to sow dissent or not. What's more important here is what is aligned with your interests.”

“I can guess your background,” the Monster Lord sneered. “We were just discussing the decimation of the Fiend races’ resistance army and capturing the Saintess when you suddenly appeared and made such a suggestion. You must be the Fiend races’ ally, though it baffles me why I have never met you before.”

Zu An didn’t deny it. “Yes, I have ties with the Fiend races’ Saintess. As a token of my sincerity, I can tell you that I was the one who defeated Incestuous King Mojard and his army.”

The War Priest, Manager Pi, and the Monster Lord straightened up in shock. “It’s you!”

“Indeed. That’s why we have a common enemy,” Zu An explained. “The Incestuous King is the Lord of Slaughter’s aide. If he learns about this matter, the Lord of Slaughter will not spare me. That’s why I wish to forge a partnership with you.”

The Monster Lord sneered, “You’re mistaken. I am loyal to my master. Men...”

Zu An sighed. “The Lord of Slaughter has secluded himself in the Fiend races’ Imperial Tomb to decipher its secrets, so he doesn’t know that you have usurped his power. If he hears about the Incestuous King’s death, he will investigate the matter and learn that you have removed his men from important positions and replaced them with your aides. How would he respond to that?”

The Monster Lord was startled. “My master is wise. He can distinguish between a normal reshuffling of manpower and an attempt to usurp power. I have never done anything disloyal. I shall take you down right now to avenge the Incestuous King!”

Terrifying pressure suddenly crashed down on the tent. The War Priest and Manager Pi, having received the Monster Lord’s signal, blocked Zu An’s path of retreat.

The Monster Lord rushed up to Zu An at an incredible speed and thrust his palm down on the latter's head, causing Zu An’s figure to shatter as if it was an illusion.

“A teleportation formation?” the War Priest exclaimed in shock.

The Monster Lord’s complexion darkened. “It’s no ordinary teleportation formation. It bears some resemblance to our world’s technology.”

“Is he from the Monster World too?” the War Priest asked, but he couldn’t think of anyone who had those unique traits.

Manager Pi stepped forward and volunteered himself. “Master, I’ll lead our men to capture him!”

The Monster Lord shook his head. “Don’t bother. Given his cultivation and aptitude in teleportation formations, you won’t be able to capture him.”

“Are we going to let him off just like that?” Manager Pi was indignant.

The Monster Lord fell silent.

The War Priest suddenly remarked, “To be honest, his proposal is an appealing one. Should we accept it first?”

The Monster Lord sneered, “You don’t even know his background. The Lord of Slaughter could have sent him here to test us. We can’t give ourselves away that easily. But he delivers a timely reminder. It looks like we’ll have to bring our plans forward.”
