Chapter 61: Holy Mission ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom

The Modern Realm, Okasa, Japan.

A young man slid out of a room, an active and loaded revolver in his hands, seemingly chasing a soul. He quickly ran through the hallway, dimly lit by the lights from neighbouring buildings.

A strange aura—the cast field—enveloped the building.

As he ran, he fired a bullet from the revolver, blue energy swirling around it. He sprinted straight ahead, then turned into the next hallway when the bullet struck the wall with a loud bang!

Before him, a disfigured soul—his target—fled. He fired more bullets charged with blue energy, but each one passed through the Grade 2 Exile soul without causing any damage.

Gritting his teeth, he muttered, "Damn, this soul. I didn’t bring my sword today. What was I thinking?" Referring to himself, he continued the chase.

The soul emitted a sound that was both crying and laughing, creating a strange noise that annoyed Haruki even more.

Suddenly, another figure burst through the window, intercepting the soul. The figure held a sword in hand and instantly swung it, slashing the soul into pieces before it turned to ashes.

Haruki groaned and scowled.

"Seriously, Shinji? What the heck? I almost had it. Thanks anyway."

Shinji grinned as he sheathed his sword. Both of them stood at 6’3" and were the same age as Yuki and Ryu.

A call came in on their phones, which they quickly pulled from their jeans pockets.

"Hello..." Haruki answered.

A strange female voice replied, "Get to headquarters now!"

She then hung up, and the two exchanged glances. They had received the same message, but from different people.

"This night?" Shinji mused, and together they walked forward, heading towards the stairs behind a door.

...

Gathering at the front of a seven-storey glass building, the two sighed in fatigue. Suddenly, four others arrived: Ryu, Yuki, Riku, and Sore. Ryu and Riku walked alongside each other, while Yuki and Sore did the same.

Arriving at where Shinji and Haruki stood, in front of the building, Ryu and Haruki exchanged a long stare before scoffing. Clearly, they remained enemies after so many years.

"You were also called here?" Haruki asked in disgust as he averted his gaze to the building.

"No, I was walking by and suddenly found my leg directing itself towards this building. As you can see, I have no connection to this place and only came to sightsee..." replied Ryu, sarcastically.

The others ignored their silent battle. Both felt as if they could draw weapons and start a fierce fight.

Rude jerk... Haruki cursed inwardly.

"....." A long silence lingered for couple of minutes.

Fortunately, Yuki broke it.

"Okay, Okay! Let’s head inside, I’m sure Mr is awaiting us."

The six instantly began walking towards the building entrance without a conversation. This is the Exorcist building, which stood like an ordinary corporation.

The expansive lobby of the glass tower.

Its polished chrome and dark granite floors reflected the myriad glowing screens lining the walls – a constantly shifting arras of data streams, security feeds, and holographic projections that displayed multiple informations about souls.

The air was subtly scented with something clean and almost antiseptic.

Scattered clusters of sleek, minimalist furniture provided seating for the occasional employee, but the overall impression was one of purposeful movement rather than relaxation. The ceiling was impossibly high, and had a mirrored expanse, reflecting the activity below and amplifying the sense of scale.

The six Exorcists walked through the throng. Each passing employee met their bows with similar courtesies.

The digital display above the elevator counted down from 7 to 1 –The brief period of waiting felt charged; the silence was punctuated only by the gentle tap-tap-tap of Yuki’s fingers on her phone screen, a small island of personal distraction in a sea of professional dedication.

The arrival of the four Exorcists from inside the elevator, each equally composed, and the subsequent exchange of bows, felt like a flawlessly executed routine.

With a soft whir and a gentle closing of doors, the elevator ascended, carrying the six Exorcists towards their destination on the sixth floor, where Ryu had selected. Yuki continued on her phone with Sore staring over it and exchanging low conversations with her.

A few minutes later, they all arrived on the sixth floor, which was a bit quiet and scarce of any Exorcists. They stepped out of the lift and took a left turn, walking down the passage, brightly lit by fluorescent lights fixed to the ceiling.

The sound of their shoes thumping against the ground echoed around.

Arriving at a wooden door, Riku knocked gently.

A deep male voice called out, "How many series of flag heads are standing outside? Get your flat brains in here!"

Riku instantly turned the door handle, opening it into the office as the six of them stepped inside. Yuki quickly tucked her phone back into her pocket.

A single, bare buld hung precariouslyfrom the ceiling over a single figure. The dominant feature was a massive, heavy oak desk, its dark wood was scarred.

Papers overflowed from neatly stacked files, creating precarious towers that would surely topple at the slightest touch.

A half-empty, chipped mug, stained a murky brown, sat amongst them. The walls were bare, save for a single, faded photograph tucked into a corner, its subject was obscured by dust and age.

Behind the desk sat a man of imposing stature, his face was slargely obscured by the shadows. His silhouette suggested a broad-shouldered, powerfully built frame, clad in a dark suit with subtle wrinkles at the elbows and knees.

His hands, resting heavily on the desk, were large and calloused.

"...And what are we here for?" Ryu asked flatly.

The man, rather than replying, threw a file to Ryu and nodded for him to go through it. The others moved closer to Ryu to catch a glimpse of what was written.

The file contained urgent details about a holy mission: the six of them were to save the Holy Priest, the ninth Chief Exorcist of the three clans, along with his three dedicated followers. The document explained that he had been kidnapped by unknown assailants, though clues had been left behind to track them down.

There were ten Chief Exorcists, each possessing unique abilities that allowed them to enter the Ki Domain—a realm where all the Ki pillars stands, not just anyone can go into it. Among them, L was the second Chief Exorcist, the head of the Kuroyami Clan was the fifth, and Shadowkai held the position of the seventh.

It was shocking and almost unbelievable that someone had managed to capture one of these powerful Chiefs, whose abilities were deemed unranked. (Don’t compare to Gojin; he is on another scale!)

The Holy Priest ran a large Catholic Church, executing eight sinners each month—those linked with souls. Rather than merely exercising the souls from their hosts, he killed both the host and the soul together, earning him a reputation as a ’psychopathic priest’ among exorcists. His hands were said to be drenched in blood, cleansed only through worship.

Now the pressing question remained: who were these individuals capable of capturing the priest? It seemed impossible!

The six of them exclaimed in shock upon seeing the Holy Priest’s name. "Holy Priest!? This can’t be true!!"

The strange man slowly brought his face out of the darkness and into the light. His features became visible: a sharp jawline, piercing blue eyes, and a furrowed brow. His dark, slightly dishevelled hair framed a face that was both intimidating and compelling.

"Listen carefully," he began, "the Holy Priest’s capture is no mere coincidence. There are forces at play that we have yet to fully understand. The clues left behind are our only hope of locating him.

"I will divide you into pairs to expedite the search.

"Ryu and Yuki will work together, Riku and Sore will form another pair, while Shinji and Haruki will be the last team. Each pair must investigate the clues and report back with any findings.

"Time is of the essence, and the sooner we act, the better our chances of rescuing the Holy Priest."

The man was known for assigning special missions to Exorcists, his reputation for orchestrating complex operations preceded him.
