Love Affairs in Melbourne-Chapter 62 - 59 Melbourne’s New Year’s Eve Dinner (Seeking Tips, Seeking Contract)
Chapter 62: Chapter 59 Melbourne’s New Year’s Eve Dinner (Seeking Tips, Seeking Contract)
At the Melbourne New Year’s Eve dinner for five people, the composition of the group was actually a bit strange.
It wasn’t strange that Yan Yan’s family of three was using someone else’s kitchen; it was the other two people who were peculiar.
Bao Bao and Shen Xi, this year, had both not gone home for the New Year.
Bao Bao had told her family early on that she would not return home for the Spring Festival this year.
After the New Year, Bao Bao’s parents would come to Melbourne, so she didn’t particularly feel the need to go back.
However, Shen Xi’s home was in Melbourne; she should have been more likely to spend the New Year at her own home.
Shen Xi and Bao Bao had already submitted their marriage application. If Shen Xi wanted to go home for Chinese New Year, she would definitely have to bring Bao Bao with her.
But because Shen Xi hadn’t graduated on time, and because she wanted to register to marry another woman, a few months ago she had completely fallen out with her family.
Since she was young, Shen Xi was a girl who loved beauty. Although she didn’t have many friends of the opposite sex, there was nothing about her that was "different."
Shen Xi effortlessly "turned" Bao Bao, but she could never get her family to accept the fact that she had already come out.
Families of Chinese descent living in Australia are often even more traditional and have more rules than families back in China.
In any case, Shen Xi’s family was like this, at least.
Shen Xi had an older brother and an older sister. The brother was born in China, while the sister and Shen Xi were born in Australia.
Both her brother and sister were exceptionally traditional "good children," strictly following the life paths planned for them by their dad and mom.
Including Shen Xi, the three siblings of the Shen family had always been the "children of other families."
The success in educating her three children was Mrs. Shen’s proudest achievement.
The Shen children were especially self-disciplined, both academically and in daily life, never causing their parents any worry.
As a result, Shen Xi, while telling her family that she hadn’t graduated on time, also proposed to marry another girl.
This dealt a heavy blow to Mrs. Shen, who didn’t even want to call Shen Xi back for the New Year.
Shen Xi was educated in Western ways and believed that marriage was her right. If the law already allowed same-sex marriage, her family shouldn’t have any reason to oppose it.
Since childhood, Shen Xi had always been "the little daughter most doted upon by her parents." No matter how she felt inside, and regardless of who was right or wrong, not being able to spend Christmas and Chinese New Year with family would surely cause a sense of loss.
So, Shen Xi, who was usually the most lively and sweet-talking, was quiet throughout the evening.
Without her parents’ blessing for her marriage, Shen Xi had a hard time getting through this New Year.
.........
Yan Dabang and his wife had actually never encountered women marrying women in China either.
Luckily, both had seen much of the world, and their own daughter hadn’t developed any such inclinations as a result.
Without any peculiar looks, Mr. and Mrs. Yan naturally accepted the "special circumstance" of their daughter’s two roommates.
Before Yan Yan’s parents came to Melbourne, Bao Bao hadn’t met them.
However, Lu Bingran, while in China, had already spoken to Bao Bao on the phone several times and had met her when they picked her up at the airport.
Bao Bao very graciously invited Yan Yan’s parents to their home for the New Year’s Eve dinner, which allowed her and Shen Xi to bask in Yan Yan’s glory.
Unlike Bao Bao, Shen Xi had never had any interaction with Yan Yan’s dad and mom before this day.
When Shen Xi went out to buy cooking ingredients in the morning, she worried that Yan Yan’s parents would, just like her own, turn their noses up at her upon learning she was a lesbian, thinking she was not mentally sound.
To her surprise, when they first met and greeted each other, not only did Yan Yan’s parents not look at her any differently, they also expressed their heartfelt gratitude for Shen Xi’s care of Yan Yan.
"Mom, Dad, have you got it wrong? She takes care of me? She’s doing well not to bully me! Shen Xi, this little girl, is best at personally attacking me, you know!" Yan Yan immediately raised an objection.
"I think it’s pretty clear you’re the one attacking her. Shen Xi looks like such a refined and well-behaved good child," Lu Bingran chastised Yan Yan.
"Mom, how could you be like this? How could you be so easily deceived by someone’s appearance? Aren’t you being a bit too naive for your age?" Yan Yan spoke to her mother without any respect for elders, just as if she were talking to a friend.
Shen Xi felt both envious and sad.
If only she could get along with her parents the way Yan Yan’s family did, how wonderful that would be.
"If a person could remain naive their whole life, that would be the happiest thing," Yan Dabang suddenly blurted out a piece of life philosophy.
"Dad, haven’t you outgrown the age for public displays of affection? Could you tone it down just a little?" Yan Yan expressed somewhat speechlessly.
"If a person could show affection their lifetime, that truly is the happiest thing. Uncle and Auntie, thank you for preparing such a sumptuous New Year’s Eve dinner," Shen Xi finally spoke up, looking particularly well-behaved and understanding, even raising her glass for a toast.
Yan Yan began to doubt whether the person who had just spoken was really Shen Xi.
Bao Bao, with one hand holding Shen Xi’s and the other raising his own cup, said, "Happy New Year, Uncle and Auntie. I’m going to strive to learn from you and learn how to show affection for a lifetime."
"Yan Yan, why can’t you be serious for even one day during the New Year? When did your dad and I ever show off our love? Come on, let’s all wish each other a joyful Spring Festival," Lu Bingran responded somewhat embarrassedly before quickly changing the subject.
Lu Bingran felt that it didn’t matter what Yan Yan said in front of the two of them, but today after all, there was an "outsider" present, and it was their first meeting.
"It’s the first time we’re celebrating the Spring Festival while having to turn on the air conditioning. Let’s all drink to our summer Spring Festival," Yan Dabang suggested, defusing his wife’s awkwardness.

Grandpa:
Answer =>
Xiao Qizi, aren’t you overthinking it? Ever since I officially took you under my wing, which girl in our class would have fanciful thoughts about you?
They probably think that, firstly, your taste is horrible for choosing to be with me, and secondly, far too intense. They’ve already turned up their noses at you.
I don’t know whether my mom and dad like celebrating the New Year in Melbourne, but I do know that they definitely love spending it with me.
After all, people celebrate the New Year, not the other way around.
And when did you, grandpa, learn to predict the future? It’s only February, and you already know whether this August will be good or bad?
Perhaps you might as well add "May the wind be smooth, the rain timely, and the nation peaceful and its people safe" as your summarizing phrase?
Ha ha ha~
You’d better not spend too much time helping me find application materials.
Otherwise, you work so hard, and then because of my lack of skill or insufficient conditions, it doesn’t happen.
Wouldn’t I have to throw my face from the Southern Hemisphere all the way to the Northern Hemisphere?
I think there shouldn’t be any fear of running out of topics to talk about between us~
Back when we used to be together every day in class, during breaks, on weekends, we always had plenty to say. Now, when even meeting has to be scheduled a year and a half in advance, are we still worried that we might run out of things to talk about?

If not, you don’t have to treat fashion as an equation that needs to be solved.
Because~ fashion is unsolvable.
As for that solvable equation you wrote me, when I have time, I’ll seriously give it a try.
It’s been so long, I can’t even remember how to write the word ’mathematics.’
Question =>
When did I say I didn’t like the word ’Love’?
