Madness After the Apocalypse-Chapter 44: Chu Peipei’s promise
Chapter 44 - Chu Peipei’s promise
Wei Wenbin returned home and collapsed onto the sofa, too defeated to even bother fixing the door.
What was the point? Even a rat would turn away from this place.
Beside him, Qian Ying'er continued to giggle foolishly, her incessant laughter only adding to his mounting frustration.
No! He needed to come up with a plan. He couldn't just wait around and die.
Straightening up, he sighed at the vacant expression on Qian Ying'er's face. "Stop laughing, let's go out for a bit."
Meanwhile, An Nan, having left Wei Wenbin's home, immediately headed for Chu Peipei's.
When she knocked on the door, there was a cautious pause before it opened.
Chu Peipei recognized An Nan's voice and peered through the peephole to confirm it was really her before opening the door.
"An Nan, what brings you here? Come on in."
Although An Nan had a favorable impression of Chu Peipei, she remained cautious, her hand tightly gripping the trident, ready to spring into action at any moment.
She stepped inside and instinctively surveyed the room, noting how cozy and well-kept it was. The shelves were filled with home goods, flower vases, a record player, and felt boards adorned with photographs. Though covered in dust, it was clear the owner once cherished a vibrant life.
On one wall, a bookshelf spanned the entire space, lined with a variety of books. Among them were classics, alongside numerous medical texts.
A large painting of a baby with big eyes hung on the wall behind the couch.
Chu Peipei, noticing An Nan's lingering gaze on the painting, felt a bitter pang in her heart.
She rubbed her tired eyes and quickly closed the door.
But then she noticed the small white dog from An Nan's home.
It was so small she almost didn't see it, and nearly trapped it in the door.
Hastily, Chu Peipei held the door open to let the little dog slowly waddle inside before closing it behind it.
She smiled and patted Fu Gui's head. "You little rascal, almost missed you."
Fu Gui sniffed around, nudged her hand with its head, then trotted over to An Nan.

Animals have a remarkable ability to sense people.
An Nan observed that, unlike others who had shown greed, Chu Peipei was the only one who didn't react with any such expression when she saw Fu Gui. Moreover, she was the only one not met with a growl.
"You've been starving for so long. Don't you feel hungry when you see it?" An Nan asked bluntly.
Chu Peipei hesitated, clearly taken aback by the question.
She glanced down at Fu Gui. "I once had a dog, a Pug named Niu Niu. I had her for fourteen years before she passed away two years ago. My husband was planning to get me another dog, but since we were preparing for a child, we decided not to get one because we wouldn't have the energy to care for it properly.
Dogs are the most loyal companions to humans. To me, they are like children. How could I bring myself to eat one?"
An Nan noticed a hint of sadness in Chu Peipei's expression and decided not to press the topic further. Instead, she handed her the food she had taken from Wei Wenbin's house.
"Here, I got this during a raid."
She had no interest in keeping anything belonging to Wei Wenbin or Qian Ying'er, but she didn't want to waste the food either, especially in these difficult times.
So, she decided to pass it along to Chu Peipei.
Chu Peipei, initially thinking An Nan had come for some other reason, was surprised by the gift.
She quickly waved her hand. "An Nan, you've already helped me so much. I can't take more from you."
An Nan replied, "It's not free. I noticed you have many medical books, so your professional abilities must be quite good. Consider this an advance for future medical services. If I need treatment someday, I'll be relying on you."
Chu Peipei quickly responded, "If you need my help, you don't need to give me anything. I'll help you no matter what."
Seeing that she was still hesitant, An Nan placed the food on the coffee table.
"I see that after losing your husband and child, your survival instinct is still strong. There must be something you want to accomplish," An Nan said, locking eyes with her. "But with your current condition, it's going to be hard. Health is the foundation of everything. With food, you can rest and recover your strength for a while."
Chu Peipei's heart softened. She sniffled, her eyes welling up.
It's true, when you're alone, you can be strong for as long as you need, but when someone cares about you, the tears always start to flow.
In these days, she had been holding on by sheer willpower. Her body had been steadily losing strength, and it felt like she could collapse at any moment.
But she couldn't afford to rest. Without food, she would be as good as dead.
How could she die before avenging her husband?
With the food An Nan gave her, she could finally catch her breath, rest for a few days, and regain her strength.
"I won't turn this down," she said softly. "Thank you, An Nan. I will take care of myself and keep going, no matter what."
After a brief pause, she added, "I hope I never have to use my medical skills on you. But if you ever need me, even if the sky falls, I will be there to help."
An Nan nodded, and without saying much more, she turned to leave, with Fu Gui following behind her.
"Rest well. We're heading home."
An Nan wasn't a saint, nor was she a perfect person—she was often indifferent to the suffering of others. But she wasn't merely a ruthless killer either.
Chu Peipei was different. She was unselfish, brave, strong, and grateful. She was a doctor.
In times of crisis, it was wise to maintain ties with good-hearted, capable individuals. One could never know when a kind and skilled doctor might be needed.
After leaving Chu Peipei's home, An Nan headed back to the 14th floor, only to find someone waiting at her door.
It was Zhao Ping'an.
When he heard footsteps, he turned around cautiously. When he saw it was An Nan, he smiled.
"Idol! I thought you were out. No one was answering the door."
An Nan noticed that he was holding something wrapped in a black plastic bag, looking quite bulky.
"Mm. I went out for a bit. Is there something you need?"
Zhao Ping'an scratched his head, smiling sheepishly. "It's nothing major. My mom, the old queen of the house, finished her dry rations and really loves the snacks you gave her. I just wanted to ask if you have any more."
Although Zhao Ping'an's family had a lot of stored food, it didn't include the small snacks like pickled chicken feet and shrimp chips.
He quickly added, "Of course, I wouldn't just take your snacks. I'll trade something for them."
He opened the plastic bag.
"I thought you might not be short on food, but maybe this will interest you—it's a high-tech fabric. When made into clothes, it keeps a constant temperature and can even prevent cuts."
An Nan paused.
Constant temperature? Cut resistance?
Her mind suddenly flashed back to the time she had raided Taiyu Building, where she had searched an entire floor and found nothing like this...
