Chapter 42 -42 Minor Characters and Important Figures
Turn left at Tsinghua West Gate and then head west along the southern wall of the Yuanming Gardens.
The Land Cruiser finally stopped in front of a three-story building.
This building, which looked like it had seen some years, had no sign at the entrance, yet seven or eight luxury cars were quietly lined up along the nearby roadside.
Among these cars were either Mercedes or BMWs, with the least expensive being a lavish 2020 S500L.
Jin Baogen calmly lit a cigarette, with Chen Cheng following behind him.
Two tall men, both over 1.8 meters, dressed in black shirts, with buzz cuts and burly figures, saw Jin Baogen and called out: “Mr.
Jin.”
Jin Baogen nodded, about to step through the doorway, then turned back to Chen Cheng and said, “Send this location to Xia Yubing, tell her to hurry over.”
“And don’t forget to call Tong Jialu.”
“Okay, Mr.
Jin.” Chen Cheng replied.
As the door opened, a melodious sound of the piano hit Chen Cheng’s ears.
What caught his eyes was a giant mahogany screen, intricately carved with dragons and phoenixes, naturally dividing the space.
Around the walls of the room hung several ancient landscape paintings, their brushstrokes revealing profound artistic conception.
And in a corner of the hall, a woman dressed in a cheongsam was playing a musical instrument.
Chen Cheng suddenly felt as if he’d stepped into a five-star hotel.
But everything before him made him feel that the understated luxury here surpassed any five-star hotel he had ever visited.
A waitress in a short cheongsam brought over a tray and handed over two towels.
“It’s hot, wipe your face,” Jin Baogen said to Chen Cheng.
The faint scent of jasmine carried away Chen Cheng’s fatigue, but stoked his curiosity even more.
He had guessed this was Jin Baogen’s private club, but couldn’t help asking: “Mr.
Jin, what place is this?”
Jin Baogen put down his towel, “Just a spot to eat and chat with friends.
Come on, they should be arriving soon.”
Following suit, Chen Cheng placed the towel back on the tray and followed Jin Baogen’s footsteps to take the elevator.
…
“Mr.
Chen, President Li from the Jingfa Bank will be here in a bit,” Jin Baogen said from within the sitting room: “Xia Yubing’s issue can be resolved tonight.”
Chen Cheng sat upright, mentally linking the “Lao Li” mentioned by Jin Baogen with the big shot behind the scenes Xia Yubing referred to.
“Okay, Mr.
Jin.”
Jin Baogen’s smile revealed a trace of ease, “Don’t be nervous, treat this place like your own home.”
Chen Cheng smiled awkwardly, “This is my first time here, Mr.
Jin!”
“Ha ha ha, Mr.
Zhai used to come here often,” Jin Baogen reminisced: “Most of the items here, he helped me find.”
Chen Cheng blinked, “My grandpa has been here before?”
“Yes,” Jin Baogen looked around and walked over to an antique shelf, picking up an enameled glass cup, “Look familiar?”
Chen Cheng took it into his hands, examining it closely.
“This…
isn’t this the cup I used to drink soda from as a kid, the one that made grandpa chase me around to smack me?”
Jin Baogen nodded with a smile, “That’s the one.”
A familiar object made Chen Cheng feel a lot more at ease.
He respectfully handed it back, “I thought grandpa sold it, I didn’t realize he’d given it to you.”
“Eh, Mr.
Zhai took the money for it,” Jin Baogen said with a laugh: “Mr.
Zhai and I, we settle accounts clearly.”
“I see…”
As they were talking, there came a knock at the door.
After the waitress opened it, in walked a middle-aged man.
He was a bit overweight, belly protruding, with a benign face, and on seeing Jin Baogen, his mouth spread into a big smile like a blooming lotus.
“Lao Li, come on in,” Jin Baogen greeted enthusiastically, “Let me introduce you, this is Chen Cheng, Mr.
Chen.”
“Mr.
Chen, this is President Li Zhida from Jingfa Bank’s head office.”
Li Zhida nodded to Chen Cheng, “Mr.
Chen, a pleasure to meet you.”
Chen Cheng responded politely, “President Li.”
“Just call me Lao Li,” Li Zhida said with a smile.
“It feels more intimate!”
Jin Baogen gestured for both of them to sit down, then said to Li Zhida, “Lao Li, there’s a bridge loan coming to your bank soon.
Keep an eye out for me when it does.”
“Mr.
Jin, rest assured, I will personally oversee it.”
Jin Baogen took out some cigarettes and offered one to each of them.
Then, he changed the topic, “The reason I asked you here today is actually for another matter.”
“Please, go ahead.”
Jin Baogen, holding his cigarette, said, “There’s a credit officer named Xia Yubing from one of your sub-branch departments who will be coming over too.”
Chen Cheng tried to read Li Zhida’s expression, sensing that his guess was off once again.
Upon hearing this name, Li Zhida showed no change in expression, as if he didn’t recognize the person at all.
“Mr.
Chen, which department are you talking about?” Jin Baogen asked.
Chen Cheng replied, “Zhongguancun.”
Jin Baogen nodded, “She was helping us with underwriting for wealth management, and now she doesn’t want to do it anymore.
Call and find out who her superior is and have him come here too.”
Li Zhida put down his cigarette, “Mr.
Jin, give me five minutes.”
With that, he stood up and walked over to the window to make a phone call.
Seeing this, Chen Cheng seemed to come to some sort of realization.
Jin Baogen could easily have someone check Xia Yubing thoroughly; the fact that he didn’t was because she wasn’t important enough for him to delve into.
“We’ll have an outcome shortly,” Jin Baogen said.
Chen Cheng nodded and cupped his hands as he lit Jin Baogen’s cigarette.
After it was lit, Jin Baogen patted the back of his hand.
“Mr.
Jin, they will arrive soon,” said Li Zhida, returning from the phone call.
“Come, have some tea.”
Approximately twenty minutes later, the door was knocked upon again.
Chen Cheng looked up and saw Xia Yubing and Tong Jialu.
Their faces were filled with nervousness and unease; it was clear they, like Chen Cheng, were in such a high-end place for the first time.
“Is it them?” Jin Baogen asked, even though he had seen the recording from Chen Cheng.
“Yes, Mr.
Jin.”
Xia Yubing and Tong Jialu stepped into the reception room.
The faint scent of tea and the sophisticated decor in the room, however, made them feel rather uncomfortable.
Their gazes wandered around, trying to draw some comfort from their surroundings, but then Tong Jialu noticed Li Zhida.
“Sister, it’s President Li from the head office!” she whispered, tugging Xia Yubing’s arm.
Xia Yubing, however, was focused on Jin Baogen, the person she had been eager to meet.
Sitting on the sofa, Jin Baogen had a faint smile on his lips, and his eyes carried an indescribable presence that was hard to face.
He didn’t seem like a stern person, but the innate authority and composure exuded from him made Xia Yubing involuntarily tense.
Compared to Jin Baogen and Li Zhida, the only familiar person present for the siblings was Chen Cheng.
“Please, take a seat,” Jin Baogen invited them to the sofa with a gesture.
Xia Yubing and Tong Jialu carefully sat down, trying to make their movements look less rigid.
Jin Baogen, smiling at them, said, “I’ve heard you’ve run into some trouble recently?”
Both sisters nodded at the same time.
“Don’t worry,” Jin Baogen emphasized again, “since I’ve promised Mr.
Chen, I will give you both a satisfactory answer tonight.”
Xia Yubing tensed up even more upon hearing Jin Baogen’s reference to Chen Cheng.
“Sis, did he just call him Brother Cheng, Mr.
Chen??” Tong Jialu muttered.
Jin Baogen turned to Li Zhida and asked, “Lao Li, how much longer until your person arrives?”
