Modern World Warlock-Chapter 271: The Secret Agents’ Contempt
The following day, after the handlers spoke with the director of the Novarian Secret Service, Dante, Megan, and Android 16 were sent to the checkpoint on the outskirts of Limsa.
The checkpoint had been built using large, thermic tents, and they had placed a few metal platforms that could be climbed to overlook the city in the distance.
The trio was taken there on a helicopter, and when they arrived, Dante noticed that all of the field agents present were ignoring them or trying to avoid them, which gave the warlock a somewhat nostalgic feeling.
Back in his old world, people would try to avoid him or, in some cases, try to assassinate him for the simple fact of being a warlock.
However, he knew those customs didn't exist on Earth, making him wonder why the agents were treating them with contempt when they hadn't even spoken a word.
As the helicopter left the area, the trio started walking to the tower to get a better view of the city from above, but they were halted by two agents.
"You must be the guys the mafia sent…" The man said in a slightly sarcastic tone.
The agent was as tall as Dante, wearing a black suit and dark sunglasses like the others. Beside him, a woman with short, black hair stood with her arms crossed, scrutinizing the trio.
"I'm Megan, the leader of the Jade Dragons," the brunette introduced herself, her eyes sharp and her tone clear.
The two agents seemed surprised for a brief second as they weren't expecting one of the leaders to show up. Nevertheless, they kept acting with indifference.
"I'm Moe Lambert, the senior agent leading this mission's squad…" The male agent said with his chin up.
"And this is Paula Mason. She is a field agent, but she is working as my assistant for this assignment," he continued.
"This is Dante, and this is Android Sixteen. Let's cut to the chase," Megan said, walking away with her companions towards the tower.
As the trio left the agents behind, Dante could see their negative umbra growing slightly, and he began to get irritated by their disdain, which was directed not only at him but also at his entire group.
After climbing the tower, they could see a part of the city that seemed to have a perpetual overcast above it. Even though it was the middle of the afternoon and the day was bright and clear, that piece of the city was darkened.
*Tch* "That's much worse than I thought…" Dante commented.
"My scan results are showing the presence of highly toxic substances on that side," Sixteen said.
"Should we get closer to check it out? What do you think?" Megan asked Dante, knowing that he was the most experienced with magical stuff.
"You got your talisman?" Dante asked back, prompting Megan to nod affirmatively. frёewebnoѵēl.com
When the trio went back down the stairs, they were halted by Moe and Paula again, who inquired about their plans.
"We are going to take a closer look," Megan replied, instantly getting cut off by the senior agent.
"I can't allow that. Nobody can enter Limsa," Moe said with a severe tone.
"Hmm? And you are saying that applies to us?" Megan pondered, raising an eyebrow with confusion.
"Of course. I don't know what the chief was thinking when he asked you criminals for help, but we can deal with this," Moe continued.
'Criminals?' Dante pondered. He was aware that a mafia faction wasn't supposed to be saints, but he didn't feel like he had been committing any crimes.
"Megan, speaking with these people is useless," Dante commented aloud, surprising the two agents, who seemed indignant at his choice of words.
"Is that right?" Megan pondered, her tone sarcastic.
"They have no intentions of letting us help, and they all hate us for some reason—even though they don't even know us," Dante replied.
"Ah, so that's how it is… Alright then, let's just do our thing and let them do theirs," Megan said with a nonchalant tone, turning around and walking away.
"W-wait! We have orders to keep watch on you," Moe commented, trying to stop the trio from leaving.
"Besides, it's not that we hate you. We just don't want to put citizens in danger," the senior agent continued.
*Sigh* "You are lying… You have absolutely no reason to hate us, yet you still do. It's the same with that girl beside you," Dante replied, sharpening his gaze and pointing at Paula.
"You can't be serious! You are just making that up!" Moe exclaimed.
"Trusting this random man over an NSS agent… How pitiful!" he continued.
At that moment, Megan turned her gaze back at the agents with a fierce look that made them clench their fists as a sudden chill went down their spines.
"Random man? I would trust Dante with my life… The only random man I see it's you, dumbass," Megan said, taking a few slow steps towards Moe.
"Why are you trying to stop us from doing our job? Are you working with the necromancer?" The brunette asked, standing less than a meter from the man.
"What!? Of course not!" Moe replied, taken aback by her comment.
Megan glanced at Dante, who nodded in response, confirming that Moe was telling the truth at that time and that he wasn't actually working with Netherius. He was simply an asshole.
"Don't fucking distract us again, or I'll call Noria myself and tell her how much time you made us waste," Megan muttered.
Dropping the name of the director of their entire organization left the two agents petrified, as they were wholly unaware that Noria herself had spoken with the mafia.
Realizing that they couldn't stop the mafia trio, Megan and her group walked away from the checkpoint and began traveling towards Limsa.
"Erm… Are you okay, Meg?" Dante asked, noticing the strange aura of displeasure around the brunette.
"I'm fine. That agent was just an idiot… I suppose his comments made me a little angry," She replied.
*Pfft* "Ahahah!" Dante loudly chuckled while holding his stomach.
"What…?" Megan pondered.
"Nothing, nothing. I just think it's funny when people try to defend me," Dante replied, still laughing about the matter.
In his past world, there were very few people who would've jumped in to defend the warlock. Among them, his party and his old lover came to mind, and seeing that Megan was almost a carbon copy of Beatrice made the whole exchange feel strangely nostalgic to him.
