Modern World Warlock-Chapter 294: The Mafia Enters the Necropolis (Part 2)
After Dante flew into the necropolis alone to scout the furthest area from the checkpoint, the other mafia members infiltrated it in small groups of two to three people.
The only people who entered the necropolis alone, apart from Dante, were Imera and Asphodel, who began flying to the other furthest points of the city.
The main objective was to figure out how much of the city had been corrupted. Several districts were covered in death's ichor, and the corruption kept growing.
While the NSS was able to discover that the necropolis expanded quite slowly, there were certain times when the growth would accelerate substantially and cover a large area in mere minutes.
Curtis, one of the GTS leaders, paired up with Zac and made their way inside the necropolis a few minutes after Dante had left.
Initially, the two of them seemed quite confident about the mission, but when they got closer to the partition of the corrupted city, Curtis nervously gulped and gently slapped his face to concentrate.
Zac had heard about Curtis and Saturio's fight, but he didn't know all of the details of what happened during the encounter, so he decided to ask and familiarize himself with one of his potential enemies.
"Honestly, Zac… It's a miracle that I got away with a broken arm," Curtis commented.
The blond man explained that, during his fight with Saturio, he was completely overwhelmed by the man's ferocity.
It didn't matter how hot Curtis' fire spells burned—Saturio seemed to endure the pain out of sheer willpower.
By the end of their fight, Curtis was lying between the debris of the building, and the only reason why Saturio didn't kill the blond man was because he "wanted him to grow and challenge him again."
"Is that what he said? He sounds like those warriors from the movies… You know? All about honor and stuff," Zac commented.
A few minutes after the duo had entered the necropolis, the other teams were infiltrating from different directions.
Megan had grouped up with Lindsey, the other leader of the GTS, and Irina, the vampire sentinel, who wanted to team up with the pair for her own reasons.
After Megan's encounter with Vesnia, where Dante hesitated to attack her, she inquired about it with the warlock, and Dante revealed that he believed Vesnia was the little sister of an old friend.
The warlock didn't go into much detail about the matter, but Megan could tell that Dante didn't want to hurt the Death Knight, so she tried to think of a way to defeat Vesnia without killing her, hoping that she could be swayed to switch sides.
When Megan talked about it with her team, Irina raised an eyebrow, reminding the women that Netherius could alter and delete memories, so even if Vesnia was the little sister of Dante's friend, she probably didn't have any attachment to them.
Moreover, they didn't have anyone on their team who could control necrotic energy as expertly as Netherius, so the chances of "bringing her back" were relatively low.
Still, Megan could clearly remember seeing Vesnia hesitate for a brief moment during their fight when Dante mentioned her sister.
Alice waited for a few minutes until all the teams were formed, and noticing that Claudia, the vampire lady, hadn't paired up with anyone, the two of them decided to team up.
The two women had shared a few words with each other during the mafia family reunions, but they weren't as close as the previous groups.
Moreover, none of them had encountered any of the powerful Death Knights. Alice had seen the first one that appeared in the underwater cave at Parton, but after listening to the stories of the other encounters, she realized that the enemies would be stronger than she thought.
Alice wanted to focus on evacuating more people from the necropolis, but her expectations were shattered when Claudia reminded her that it was impossible for someone to survive in such an environment without magical protection.
Still, the ex-detective hoped that more people could be saved, and the vampire lady thought it was admirable of her to stay positive.
'She might be quite disappointed at the end of this…' Claudia thought, but she still decided to follow Alice's plan. freeweɓnovel.cøm
Balthazar—the elder vampire and the strongest of the clan below their mother—teamed up with his little brother Ezekiel and ex-detective June.
June had been training with the Gamma Team ever since she joined the Jade Dragons, and after her practice with Master Hayato, her combat skills put her up to par with the best fighters in their faction.
Of course, June couldn't use any magic, but Master Hayato had taught her how to sense and predict magical attacks in order to avoid or deflect them, and the woman had made a lot of progress.
Laurent and Madeline, the two remaining vampires, grouped up with Maya, who had also incessantly trained with Master Hayato, and her combat skills were among the top three of the Jade Dragons.
Initially, Laurent believed that Maya would be a hindrance to his team since she couldn't cast any spells. However, when he glanced at the woman for a second time, he felt an eerie sensation that sent shivers down his spine.
He couldn't tell why, but his body instinctively warned him that the woman with no magic was dangerous, and his curiosity was piqued, wanting to see what kind of combat Maya would show him.
Madeline, on the other hand, expressed her gladness in teaming up with Maya, saying that she was a fan of her pink hair.
Surprisingly, Maya had heard that compliment a lot of times in the past, and after thanking the vampire for the praise, she sternly asked them to prepare so that they could enter the necropolis.
The last team that infiltrated the necropolis was the largest one, with both Lexia and Sami commanding twenty androids that were sent by the Azure Rebels.
Lexia seemed hesitant to enter the necropolis, considering what she went through, but it was her own idea to join the mission, and after Sami placed a hand on her shoulder as reassurance, Lexia's determination could be seen on her face.
'I can't let anyone else go through that hell…' Lexia thought.
