Modern World Warlock-Chapter 326: Maya’s Magic Detection
At the top of a tall residential building inside the necropolis, the team with Maya, Laurent, and Madeline had gathered there to scout the area from above.
Maya, the pink-haired woman who had been acting as the leader of the Gamma Team for the Jade Dragons, had also gone through rigorous training with Master Hayato to learn how to detect magic by using her five senses.
Laurent, the vampire lord, hadn't seen Maya in action, so he was unaware of what the woman was capable of, and he doubted that she would be able to take care of herself in a difficult situation.
Madeline, on the other hand, didn't care a single bit about Maya's skills. The vampire sentinel just wanted to complete the mission as quickly as possible so that she could go back to her home and play video games.
Since it was Asphodel who asked them to group up with Maya, Laurent couldn't decline, and he started to think that his mother was testing him to see if he could protect a non-magic user in a tough battle.
After the trio spent a few minutes looking down at the corrupted city, Maya showed interest in a restaurant building a few blocks away from them.
"We should check that place…" Maya muttered, scanning her surroundings with a focused expression.
Madeline didn't hear her words as she was listening to music in her headphones and bobbing her head to the rhythm of the music, prompting Laurent to ask why she was interested in visiting a random restaurant.
"The atmosphere there seems colder than in the other areas…" Maya explained.
"How can you tell all the way from here?" Laurent pondered, dubious of the woman's claims.
"Hmm, the smell, the sound… It's definitely much colder around that small building," Maya replied, but her answer wasn't detailed enough to satisfy Laurent.
"So, you can really use your five senses to detect magic?" Laurent asked, crossing his arms.
Realizing that the vampire wasn't going to move without a full explanation, Maya stood up from her crouching position and gave him a brief summary of Hayato's teachings.
When Master Hayato and Dante sparred for the first time, Dante realized that the man could block, avoid, or deflect his spells without the use of any magic.
The swordmaster could feel the "alteration" of the environment, which allowed him to guess where the attacks were coming from.
Maya and June instantly became interested in learning those skills as they were one of the few people on the frontlines of the Jade Dragons who couldn't use magic, and before they decided to ask Dante for a contract, they requested Master Hayato's guidance.
When Dante cast a spell such as "Destro," which released an invisible wave of destruction, the atmosphere around the spell would "warp," and as long as the opponent could figure out where this warp was happening, they could guess the direction of the attack.
It wasn't a skill that anyone could learn in a few days, and it required incredible amounts of concentration and awareness of one's surroundings. However, Maya and June were so determined that they managed to achieve it.
"Something I've noticed is that you guys rely on your magic sense way too much…" Maya commented, slightly surprising Laurent, as her words made it sound like she was better at detecting other presences than him.
"I see… Let's test your skills, then," Laurent replied, prompting the trio to leave the rooftop of the building with the vampire lord carrying Maya in his arms.
When the trio descended, they found themselves in front of what used to be an Italian restaurant, entirely covered in death's ichor, and just as Maya predicted, the air felt much colder than in other areas of the city.
"You were right. It seems there's a necrotic core in there…" Laurent commented, able to sense the powerful energy coming from the building now that they were closer.
After the vampire lord kicked down the door, a cold breeze blew their hair for a brief moment, along with a pungent smell of death.
The restaurant wasn't big, and they could see the necrotic core glowing in the back, where the kitchen was situated.
As the trio entered the building and made their way to the kitchen, the whispers of the dead became louder, prompting Madeline to take off her headphones with a hint of annoyance.
"I get it, I get it… Now, get out of my head!" Madeline exclaimed, rushing to the kitchen and shattering the orb with one powerful punch.
*Sigh* "I wanted to get a closer look first, Madeline…" Laurent said to his little sister, who ignored his words and placed her headphones back on.
"I guess that takes care of that-" Maya said, cutting her sentence short and turning her head to the side.
"You guys hear that?" The pink-haired woman asked her companions.
Madeline couldn't hear anything since she was listening to music, but Laurent took her warning seriously and stayed silent, trying to discern the sound she referred to.
'I don't hear anything…' Laurent thought, but he didn't say it aloud as he believed it was a bit embarrassing.
Suddenly, he felt a powerful presence approaching their location at an incredible speed, and even Madeline was able to detect it with her headphones on, prompting the two vampires to rush out of the building with Maya.
Right as the trio left through the main door, a streak of purple light came down from the sky and landed on the building, leaving a gaping hole in the roof and utterly destroying everything the light touched.
When the group looked up, they spotted a man completely covered in bandages. He was wearing a leather jacket with a hoodie and the zipper open, showing his bandaged torso and slightly tattered jeans. fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com
Even the man's eyes were covered by the bandages, but that didn't take away any of the threat the trio felt coming from him.
Madeline had taken off her headphones, acknowledging that their opponent required her full attention.
"This must be the warlock we heard about…" Laurent muttered to his team.
"Dante said his name was Udras… Not that it matters," Maya said, getting into a firmer stance and preparing herself for battle.
