Murim's Weakest Princess-Chapter 107: Elephant or Squirrel Child?
Chapter 107: Elephant or Squirrel Child?
"Greetings," a man’s voice boomed when the door opened. Anji thought it sounded like a middle-aged man. From her corner, she could not see who it was or their cultivation level. Her brother’s poker face was unreadable, and Anji was unsure if she should activate the talismans. Judging from the angle of her brother’s neck, the person outside the door must be taller than Gu Ying.
The man who knocked on the door was rugged-looking. However, there was no mistaking that he was a pugilist. Mingshen was cautious but courteous, not wanting to alarm his younger sister. Neither of them in the room was his match, and Gu Ying was nowhere close. However, the martial artist did not seem to have any ill intentions.
"I knew there were children! My friend did not agree. She said I was crazy. Nobody sane would stay at a Fighter’s Inn willingly. The boss rarely has regular customers."
Despite the booming voice, the man at the door sounded friendly. Anji thought he was visiting out of curiosity, but her brother would not let up or invite the guest inside. Putting on his most polite smile, he did not say anything else to confirm or deny the man’s statement. It wasn’t often that he stumbled onto an illegal fight club and underground gambling lord’s establishment that did not belong to them. However, he was also no stranger to how this worked. It would explain why the inn was very shabby. The innkeeper must have thought they were here to register for the fight club as participants. This uninvited visitor was trying to assess his opponents before meeting them officially in the den.
No wonder this town was full of thugs. The civilians living here were either children of crooks born here or crooks themselves on the run. It wasn’t a safe town to be in. However, they were running a little low on supplies needed to last the next few days of travel before reaching the valley where Bai Dajin was waiting for them.
When the fighter realised the young scholar was not replying to him, he dropped the friendly uncle act and immediately stopped smiling. Ordinary children would have flinched or become close to tears. The youth in front of him remained steady with cold and unwavering eyes. He refused to let the fighter even one step into the room as if guarding something. The other child was a young girl. It was obvious how he prioritised protecting his younger sister now that their guardian was not with them.
"Relax," the fighter rolled his eyes. "I’m not here to pick a fight. It doesn’t seem like any of you are here to compete for the grand prize, either. Close the doors and turn the lights out by ten if you don’t want trouble. Don’t step out of the room until the sun rises tomorrow, and leave as soon as you can. That’s my only advice. I don’t know why rich children are travelling to such a dangerous place, but for your sister’s sake, you should heed my warning."
Finally showing an expression that wasn’t fake, Mingshen bowed slightly and clasped his hands in front of him to thank the fighter. However, in doing so, the fighter caught a glimpse of the fan in his hand. A glint of realisation of who this young master was made him back off a few steps.
"Thank you for the kind advice," Mingshen smiled and noticed the look of panic in the fighter’s eyes. "I, Zhao Mingshen, the second prince of the Celestial Dragon Sect, will remember your kindness."
Closing the door in the fighter’s face, Mingshen locked it behind him. If it were Gu Ying, she would knock on the door with the usual code. After creating a clear warning, there should not be any more uninvited guests tonight until they leave tomorrow morning.
"It’s alright now," he smiled at Anji. "They won’t disturb us again." ƒreewebηoveℓ.com
Putting the talismans away, Anji returned to the bed as Mingshen closed the windows.
"Is it wise to let him know who we are?" Anji questioned. "I thought you said keeping our identities a secret was better."
She was not wrong. Normally, it would be safer for them to blend in with the others as just some rich children travelling themselves. However, that was only in an ordinary town.
"This is a town of outlaws and crooks. The people here are all criminals who are wanted by the government and established their homes here. If they weren’t criminals, they would still be children of crooks. There is no magistrate that oversees this area, and the only rule they follow is the law of the jungle."
The law of the jungle... Anji heard about that before. It was something Bai Dajin mentioned when he shared stories of his youth with her Yihao. The White Tiger Sect was a ruthless place where they only believed in the strong. It was why, of all the sects in the Rainbow Alliance, the White Tiger Sect was the only sect exempted from manners.
According to Bai Dajin, Liu Guiya once donated some spare martial manuals from the Heavenly Phoenix’s library only to become enraged when the disciples of the White Tiger Sect used them as spare fuel for lighting fires in winter. The White Tiger sect was so ill-managed that daily duels took precedence over everything else. Nobody bothered to take care of cleanliness, cooking or chores. They spent money on more meat than anything else, and eventually, the Rainbow Alliance had to step in and collectively assist Bai Dajin with his sect’s administrative affairs.
"But neither of us are as strong as the fighters here," Anji reasoned. "They could easily kidnap us for ransom now that they know our identities."
Nodding, Mingshen agreed.
"You’re not wrong. However, like how the hyenas will not willingly enter a lion’s den, the lions here will not willingly kidnap the young of an elephant that belongs to a large herd."
Although elephants were usually gentle creatures, they were known as one of the biggest animals to exist. A herd of elephants could easily trample out even the strongest lion. Offending the family of elephants and going to war with it would not do the lion any good. No wonder her older brother deliberately showed the fighter his fan. Applauding her brother’s brilliant mind for thinking two steps ahead of her, Anji wondered if the same thing would work if she had been the one to answer the door instead of her older brother.
Clearing his throat, Mingshen advised Anji not to do so.
"It’s one thing to be the young of an elephant and another to look like one. If you answered the door, they might see you as a young squirrel and kidnap you as a toy instead."
Annoyed by how her older brother was comparing her to a squirrel, Anji protested heavily and became disgruntled when Mingshen reached over to pinch her cheeks.
"See? Only squirrels would have such soft cheeks to store away all the nuts they hoard," he laughed while Anji smacked him lightly on the chest in protest.
Knock. Knock knock. Knock knock.
The five little taps at the door made both children forget what they were doing. There was no mistaking this little code. Gu Ying was back!
Rushing to the door, Anji beamed and struggled to unlock it. This time, Mingshen did not stop his sister and sauntered over leisurely before helping her to lift the heavy wooden latch.
