He lounged in his office, the afternoon sunlight streaming through the windows, stretching shadows over the tiles. Other than the muffled noise from the city outside, the office was completely still. His hands were clasped tightly together, his elbows resting on the edge of his mahogany desk. He lowered his head, rubbing his temples like he was trying to chase away a headache.

He wasn't his usual calm self; for the first time in ages, he felt... off-balance. A name reverberated through his mind—Axel. The image of Raelynn holding that damned rose and smiling softly as she talked about how kind and funny the man was. Elion's jaw clenched tightly, the memory stirring something deep and unpleasant within him.

He exhaled sharply and straightened, reaching for his phone on the desk. He turned his phone over in his hands, its cold surface grounding him as he searched through the contacts.

Finding the name he was looking for, he tapped it and raised the phone to his ear.

The line rang twice before a voice answered.

"Elion," the familiar voice rumbled on the other end. "What is it? You don't usually call during these hours."

Elion leaned back in his chair, his gaze fixed on the sprawling view of the city skyline. "Did you wrap up the investigation?" he asked, cutting straight to the chase.

There was a pause on the other end. "Which investigation? You'll have to be more specific," Kade asked cautiously, though he sounded like he already guessed.

"The man from the Weston party," Elion said impatiently. "The one who saved Raelynn."

Another pause, this one longer. "Not yet," Kade admitted. "We're still working on it. These things take time, Elion. Why the rush?"

Elion's grip on the phone tightened, his knuckles whitening. "I don't care about your timeline, Kade," he snapped. "Just tell me what you know so far."

Kade let out a slow breath, clearly trying to gauge Elion's mood. "Alright," he gave in. "His name's Axel. Works as a librarian at the city library—an odd job, if you ask me. He came to Weston Inc. as a representative, Arthur's one of the big investors there. Other than that, he's clean on the surface. He's got an older sister. No criminal record, no obvious ties to anything suspicious, so far."

Elion's eyes narrowed, his mind latching onto every detail. A librarian? A representative? The details didn't completely line up, but nothing outright screamed guilty. Yet there was just something about Axel that rubbed him the wrong way, though he couldn't say why.

"And?" Elion pressed, his tone cold.

"And that's it for now," Kade replied, his voice tinged with irritation. "We're still digging, but there's nothing alarming so far."

Elion exhaled sharply through his nose, his frustration barely contained. He leaned forward, his free hand raking through his dark hair. "Do you think he's kind?"

There was a long silence on the other end. "What?" Kade finally asked, sounding genuinely puzzled.

"Don't pretend you didn't hear," Elion said, his voice dipping into a growl. "Do you think he's kind?"

"Elion," Kade began, a hint of hesitation in his voice, "why does that matter?"

Elion ignored the question, his mind racing. "What about funny?" he demanded. "Is he funny?"

This time, Kade's irritation was impossible to miss. "What the hell are you talking about? Why are you asking me this?"

Elion's lips pressed into a thin line, his irritation mounting. He pushed himself out of his chair, pacing across the room. The faint sound of his footsteps filled the room. "Never mind," he said through clenched teeth. "Just keep digging. I want to know if he's connected to that... organization." The disdain in his voice was clear as he referred to the name indirectly. "Make sure he's clear."

"You're acting weird, Elion," Kade muttered. "But fine. I'll keep you updated."

"Good," Elion said shortly and ended the call without another word.

He lowered the phone, his fingers curling around it tightly as he stared out the window. The skyline turned golden as the sun set, with the first city lights starting to appear. Despite the gorgeous view, Elion felt nothing but unease.

Axel.

The name echoed in his mind, bringing with it an unsettling mix of emotions he couldn't identify. Jealousy? No, that couldn't be it. He had no reason to be jealous. Raelynn was nothing more than the mother of his child—a practical arrangement, nothing more. And yet...

Her smile haunted him. The warmth in her voice and the glow in her eyes when she mentioned Axel said it all. She'd called him kind. Funny. And that smile...

Elion's jaw tightened as he turned away from the window. His office felt too small, too confining. The phone landed with a quiet thump as he rested his hand on it briefly before pulling back.

The feeling of disgust hit him hard, sharp and uncomfortable.

The thought of Raelynn enjoying someone else's company, someone who wasn't him, was... unbearable. His lips curled into a slight sneer at the realization, though he quickly wiped the expression away.

"Ridiculous," he muttered to himself, shaking his head.

But the feeling lingered, gnawing at him like an itch he couldn't scratch. No matter how much he tried to reason it away, the truth stayed firmly lodged in his mind. He cared. More than he wanted to admit, even to himself.

And that infuriated him.

With a heavy sigh, he lowered slowly into his chair as if trying to regain control of the storm raging within him. He rested his elbows on the desk, his hands clasped together as he stared blankly at the surface.

Axel.

The name was a thorn in his side, a source of irritation he couldn't seem to ignore.

But he would find out the truth. Whether Axel was connected to the shitty organization or not, whether he was truly as harmless as he seemed... Elion would uncover everything.

And then, perhaps, this unsettling feeling would finally fade.

Or so he hoped.
