Chapter 159: 159 hurts
“You have no idea what I really want,” a man stormed out, slamming the door behind him.
Behind him, a woman lay on the ground, weeping.
…
“Mom, where did dad go?”
The response was a cold voice, “He’s dead.”
…
“Xuanxuan, you’re all grown up now, remember what mom says, never believe the sweet nothings men whisper. They say sweet things just to trick you into their hands. Once they get what they want, they start to get bored, grow disdainful of you, until one day, they abandon you. So, you must keep your eyes peeled and only go for a man who is truly reliable…”
…
Bai Jinxuan opened her eyes, her face wet.
It was just a dream.

She felt a sense of loss, already half a year in this world, and she didn’t know how her mother was faring. Her disappearance must have hurt her mother the most.
Lying there in a daze for a while, she hadn’t dreamt of the past in a long time.
She remembered how she used to talk back whenever her mom lectured her about finding a dependable man, saying that if men were reliable, pigs would fly.
“If you met Chen Xu, you would like him. Aside from being a bit clueless about romance, he barely has any faults.”
“Actually, I was a bit worried at first. He never touched me, and I wondered if he was incapable. But one time, when he hugged me, he held me so tight it was almost painful, and that put my mind at ease.”
As she said this, she glanced subconsciously at the small bed placed at the foot of her own, seeing that Yaoyao was still asleep, then continued, “Now, he’s gone off to war, been gone for several days.”
At this point, her brow furrowed again, “The night before he left, I wanted to stay in his room, but he didn’t agree. I could tell he was worried about something, he must be afraid I won’t forget him. Sometimes I think he’s really silly, silly to the extreme.”
“He left knowing the danger was great, he doesn’t truly love me, does he?”
“Sometimes I think, is it really worth it? Going to all this trouble trying to please him, abandoning all my pride, just to make him like me?”
“After he left, I told myself, if he really dies out there, I’ll cry for him once at most, then go find a better man.”
“Who does he think he is? Can’t I live without him?”
“Even if he does make it back alive, I’m going to hold my head high, have him chase after me, beg me. Have him bring me gifts, take me to the movies, whisper sweet nothings to make me happy, declare his love for me in front of everyone…”
As she spoke, her face lit up with a wistful smile.
“Sister.”
Suddenly, Yaoyao’s voice rang out, and Jinxuan’s smile froze as she turned to the little bed at the foot of her own. Yaoyao had opened her eyes and was looking at her, “Do you miss Uncle Chen?”
“Cough, you’re awake,” Bai Jinxuan’s face flushed with embarrassment, such mortifying thoughts overheard by a little girl, “Go brush your teeth, I’ll make breakfast.”
With that, she left the room as if escaping.
Forty minutes later, Bai Jinxuan walked out the door with Yaoyao, ready to take her to kindergarten.
“Hooray!”
Walking down the street, they suddenly heard a wave of cheering, swelling from a distance and quickly spreading throughout the whole camp.
What happened?
In her confusion, she heard someone bellowing, “Victory, we’ve won. Taiji and all the robots have been wiped out. The world is at peace!”
Hearing this news, Bai Jinxuan was first stunned, then overjoyed. It meant that the war was finally over.
Chen Xu would be coming back!
She couldn’t bother with taking Yaoyao to kindergarten anymore. She picked her up and ran towards the headquarters. She was desperate to know the news about Chen Xu.
The high-ranking officials in the headquarters all knew her and knew she was part of Chen Xu’s family. Even the gatekeeper was quite polite to her. These days, she had come to inquire about Chen Xu’s situation every day, and the gatekeeper had grown accustomed to it.
Before long, a staff officer came out and told her that Chen Xu was fine, not only unharmed but had also distinguished himself again in action. This time when he returned, he was likely to be awarded another First-Class Combat Hero Medal.
Upon hearing that Chen Xu was safe and unharmed, Bai Jinxuan completely relaxed, and hurriedly asked when he could return.
“In accordance with the current pace of the troops, he should be back in two days.”
After expressing her gratitude, she left with Yaoyao, jubilantly saying, “Yaoyao, your Uncle Chen is coming back soon.”
Yaoyao, cradled in her embrace, looked at the smile on her face and asked curiously, “Are you going to marry Uncle Chen?”
“Who’s going to marry him?”
She snorted but after a while muttered softly, “Only if he proposes to me in front of everybody.”
“Ha, when Uncle comes back, I’ll tell him.”
“You dare!”
“Hahaha, stop tickling me, hahaha…”
……
Two days later, it was almost noon.
In the room, Bai Jinxuan sat in front of the mirror, dressed in the white sleeveless dress which Chen Xu liked the most.
Every time she wore this dress, his eyes would unconsciously drift towards her, particularly to her shoulders. It was really a peculiar preference.
“How strange, why has it become so quiet outside?”
A vague unease settled in her heart. She put down her eyebrow pencil and picked up the lipstick, the shade that caught Chen Xu’s attention the most. She twisted it open and applied it to her lips.
As she did so, the lipstick suddenly broke in half.
Ding-dong.
The doorbell rang suddenly outside, making her heart tense up.
Could it be Chen Xu returning?
In a bit of a panic, she put down the broken lipstick, pulled out a tissue, and wiped off the excess from her lips. After checking in the mirror to make sure everything looked fine, she went to open the door.
Opening the door, she found the camp’s top leaders standing outside, their expressions somber.
Her heart began to race as she asked, “Chen… where’s Chen Xu?”
The leaders took off their hats with a sense of grief and said, “Comrade Chen Xu contracted a serious illness on his way back and passed away this morning.”
As they spoke, they stepped aside, revealing a stretcher carried by several people behind them, covered with a white cloth.
She walked step by step towards it, her hands trembling as she pulled back the white cloth to see Chen Xu’s all too familiar face, only now his eyes were tightly shut, his complexion pale, devoid of any sign of life.
In an instant, her world lost all its color as a loud thudding sound rang in her ears, growing faster and faster. She clutched her chest, gasping for air, and after a sharp pain, her vision went dark as she lost consciousness.
Dimly, she seemed to hear noisy voices nearby, but all of it seemed meaningless to her.
………
“Ah… wah…”
Bai Jinxuan clutched her chest and began to sob loudly.
Outside, the agent Fangfang, who was communicating with the makeup artist, heard the commotion inside. Startled, she rushed in and saw Bai Jinxuan in such agony that she was taken aback. “What’s wrong with you?”
“My heart hurts so much…” Bai Jinxuan cried out, barely able to catch her breath, “Wu… it hurts so much, I feel like I’m about to die…”
“Don’t panic, I’ll take you to the hospital right away,” Fangfang said in a flustered tone.
