My Husband Is a Million Years Old Vampire-Chapter 27
Chapter 27: Chapter 27
Chloe’s breath hitched as she leaned closer to Liam, her fingers clutching the edge of the table between them.
"Guess what?" she started, her voice laced with urgency.
But before she could even finish, Liam leaned back, exhaling as he cut her off with a smirk.
"You saw Valentina, didn’t you?" His tone was eerily calm, almost like he had been expecting this.
"All her burn scars are gone."
Immediately Chloe’s eyes widened in disbelief. She felt her heart drop to the pit of her stomach.
"You... you already knew?" Her voice came out in a whisper, laced with shock. "How?" She shook her head, taking a step back as if the truth itself was physically pushing her away. "How did you know, Liam?"
Liam’s smirk didn’t falter. He swirled the whiskey in his glass, his eyes gleaming with something unreadable. "Bernard," he said simply.
"He saw her first. Said it was like looking at a ghost—except the ghost was more beautiful than ever." He let out a short, humorless chuckle. "Naturally, we had to confirm it for ourselves. And sure enough, there she was. Perfect. Untouched. As if nothing ever happened to her."
At that moment Chloe’s throat went dry. She could barely breathe.
"Even my parents know?" she whispered, her voice almost shaking.
Liam nodded. "Of course. Your father is already making moves. He won’t let Valentina remain outside the family for long. Not when she looks like that." His tone darkened, his smirk finally fading.
"And not when she’s married to that nobody."
Chloe could feel the blood draining from her face. Her hands clenched into fists at her sides. "This doesn’t make sense," she muttered.
"It’s only been a week. Just one week. How is this possible?"
Liam’s expression turned calculating, his gaze sharp.
"That’s what we’re going to find out."
Chloe’s entire body stiffened, her fingers curling into the fabric of her dress as she struggled to comprehend Liam’s words.
"Even if—" she exhaled sharply, shaking her head. "Even if she got the best surgeon in the world, there’s no way Valentina’s scars would disappear this quickly. It’s only been a week, Liam." Her voice wavered slightly, but her expression remained hard.
"What if... what if she’s wearing something? Like... another skin, some kind of advanced medical covering?"
Then Liam scoffed, shaking his head.
"You think I haven’t considered that?" His voice was cold, calculating. "But Bernard saw her up close. We saw her on the footage. That wasn’t a disguise, Chloe. That was real skin." He leaned in slightly, his sharp eyes locking onto hers.
"Whatever happened to her wasn’t natural."
Chloe shuddered, a chill running down her spine.
"We have to find out," she murmured, almost to herself.
Liam nodded.
"We will."
Taking a deep breath, Chloe straightened her posture, as if gathering herself.
"I went to the jewelry store today to get the accessories for the wedding," she admitted, brushing a hand through her hair.
"But I couldn’t." She laughed dryly, though there was no humor in her voice.
"I was so shaken when I saw her that I had to leave. But I’ll go again tomorrow."
Liam exhaled slowly, studying her. Then, as if he had been waiting for the right moment, he spoke. "There’s no rush."
Immediately Chloe frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"The wedding..." Liam’s voice was even, unreadable.
"It’s been postponed."
Silence followed.
For a moment, Chloe thought she had misheard him. She stared at him, unblinking, her mind refusing to process his words. Then, suddenly, a sharp, cutting laugh left her lips.
"What did you just say?" Her voice was eerily calm, but her eyes burned with disbelief.
But Liam didn’t repeat himself.
Chloe’s breath came out shaky, her fingers curling into her palm as she took a step closer to Liam. Her voice quivered, barely above a whisper, "How... how can the wedding be postponed? How?"
Liam barely flinched, his expression calm.
"It’s postponed, not canceled."
Chloe’s entire body tensed, her lips pressing into a thin line before she let out a sharp, humorless laugh. "Postponed?" Her voice grew louder, rising with every word.
"Do you have any idea what that means? I’ve sent out invitations! My dress—my dress is already custom-fitted! The venue, the flowers, the caterers—all of it is already set! Do you think I can just call everyone and say, ’Oh, sorry, change of plans, wedding’s off for now?"
Her chest heaved, her nails digging into her palm as she tried to steady her breathing.
"I have friends flying in from overseas! The press already caught wind of this! Everyone knows I’m getting married next week!" She threw up her hands, her eyes burning with frustration.
"And now, out of nowhere, you’re telling me it’s postponed? Just like that?"
Liam sighed, clearly expecting her outburst. But his voice remained even. "It’s not my fault, Chloe. Even your parents agreed to it. This wasn’t just my decision."
Chloe’s breath caught in her throat. "You’re lying," she snapped, shaking her head.
"There’s no way my parents would agree to something like this! Not after everything they’ve done to make this happen!"
Chloe clenched her fists, shaking her head as if trying to wake herself from a bad dream.
But she didn’t wake up.
"No... No, I don’t believe it," she muttered, her voice unsteady.
"This is a lie. It has to be a lie."
Liam remained silent, his face unreadable.
Her breath hitched as she pulled out her phone. Her fingers hovered over her mother’s contact, but she hesitated. A part of her already knew the truth, but she refused to accept it. She looked up at Liam, her eyes burning with frustration. "Tell me this is a joke," she demanded.
"Tell me you’re just messing with me!"
Liam exhaled, his voice calm but firm.
"If you don’t believe me, call your mother. She’ll tell you the same thing."
At that moment Chloe’s grip on her phone tightened. Her heart pounded against her ribs as realization sank in.
"Even my mother agreed?" she whispered, almost to herself. The betrayal stung more than she expected.
Then, like a switch had flipped, another thought slammed into her mind. Her lips parted, her breath shaky. Could it be...?
Immediately her eyes snapped back to Liam, studying his face. He was too calm. Too composed.
Then a bitter laugh escaped her throat as she took a step back.
"Oh. I get it now." Her voice trembled, but not with sadness—pure rage burned behind her words. "It’s because of her, isn’t it?"
Liam’s silence was deafening.
Chloe let out a sharp breath, her whole body trembling. "That’s it, right? That’s why you postponed our wedding? Because of Valentina?"
Her voice cracked with fury.
However Liam didn’t answer. He didn’t need to.
Chloe’s heart twisted painfully, her face contorting with a mix of anger and disbelief.
"I should have known," she spat, her voice dripping with venom.
"I should have known you never got over her. I should have known you were a betrayer."
