Chapter 124: Predicament

The Yogusho village was bathed in a rosy glow, the sun’s first light of the day casting long shadows across the roofs of the houses, stores, and shops alike.

The sky was already a mix of colors, the red and orange hues of the sunrise painting the sky in a beautiful canvas.

Despite the early hour, the village was already beginning to stir, the sounds of the villagers starting their day reaching Coco’s ears as she made her way through the town.

She ended her day a little early yesterday due to her shock seeing a child mediator who was to the village to be Chief Salamandara’s assistant— in other words, he was cast aside, never to bat an eye on again.

Coco felt bad for the child, but he seemed like he was desperate to make her stay.

Coco was tired and needed to rest so she ended up running away like usual, leaving a trail of dust in her wake as she sprinted back towards Red Horse Inn.

Does she feel bad? Absolutely.

Would she do it again? Hell, yeah!

Befriending people her age is one thing, but befriending a child? She’s not sure if she would be able to keep up with him in the long run, she is a busy person after all.

Coco let out a sigh and tightened her robe around her body, her hands going straight to the bag in her right while she tightened her grip on the basket on her left, a much smaller one compared to the basket she usually carries.

She’s on her way to the house of Coco Hughes and her mediators because Heiren strictly told her to.

Zaque and Heiren drilled it into her head that she must stop at the house before she gets out of the village or she will receive more than just a sting in her wounds.

She’s glad that she’s slowly mending whatever was broken between her and mediators because she wants to befriend them, having told them that she wasn’t from this world and knows the existence of her fairy companion.

On her way to the house, she had also stopped by the pub where the chef was already waiting for her.

The chef handed her the bag and the basket before he went back to his kitchen, the usual stoic and furrowed eyebrows on his face which seems to be permanent due to how that was the only expression she has seen on his face so far.

"Coco!"

The familiar childlike voice reached Coco’s ears, making her body grow stiff from hearing it.

Before she knew it, she made a run for the house, leaving the little boy behind, not caring if she was being disrespectful towards him.

She doesn’t even know his name!

"Zaque! Zaque! Heiren? Heiren?! Zaque?! Open the door please! Whoever’s awake!" Coco exclaimed, her knuckles smacking against the wood continuously and banging on the door without remorse.

Her knocking must have woken up someone because she heard footsteps descending the staircase before the door slammed open.

Quizen’s eyebrows were furrowed, sleep clouded his blue irises and his lips were twisted into a scowl, which only deepened when his gaze landed on the person who was the one on the other side of the door.

"Coco..? It’s too early for thi—" Quizen couldn’t finish what he wanted to say because Coco was quick to push him inside further into the house and close the door behind her, her eyes wide in panic and she was breathing heavily.

"I’m so sorry for barging in here like this and waking you up like that, but I was in a predicament and this was my original destination so I had no choice, but to go here!" Coco explained in one breath, her hands tightening around Quizen’s hands as she took a deep breath.

".. O.. Okay..?" The fourth husband said, his voice dripping with reluctance.

Coco looked like she had seen a ghost and she was as pale as paper— whatever she had seen outside must have scared her so badly that she didn’t know that she was clinging to him.

The commotion they have created must have woken up someone on the second floor because another pair of footsteps had echoed in the hall.

"What’s with the noise..? Isn’t it too early for all of this.. Goodness, Coco? Quizen..? Oh, Quizen. Thank you for opening the door for her." Zaque smiled at the fourth husband, but his smile didn’t reach his eyes.

"You’re welcome..? Well, whatever. Just take this woman off me!" Quizen hissed and glared at Zaque.

The first husband didn’t think twice of grabbing Coco’s hands from Quizen’s and stirring her away from Quizen, letting her hold his hands instead.

Zaque was quick to notice the panicked state of their wife and raised an eyebrow.

"What happened?" Zaque asked, turning to the other mediator to answer his question, "Why is Coco shaking like a leaf?"

"Beats me." The fourth husband shrugged his shoulders and turned in his heels, his head held up high as he ascended the stairs to go back to his room.

He was still annoyed that Coco ruined his beauty sleep with all that knocking so he would sleep some more.

Zaque merely shook his head and looked back at Coco, calling out to her softly as to not startle her out of her inner stupor. "Hey, look at me."

Coco blinked. "Zaque..?"

"Yeah, it’s me." Zaque smiled and gave Coco’s hand a reassuring squeeze, "What’s up? What happened out there?"

"A kid happened." Coco quickly answered, her face draining its color once more. ƒreewebηoveℓ.com

Zaque’s eyes went wide when he heard Coco’s words, his mouth going dry and his face turning white as well.

"You.. Wh.. What?" He gasped, his hold on Coco’s hands tightening when he realized what Coco’s words meant, his heart beating fast anxiously.

How could she..? She haven’t done it with us yet—

Zaque could only bite the inside of his mouth, already knowing the answer.
