45 -41: Earth’s Ambition_1
“You know,” Luo’er revealed a bitter smile, “when I was forced to do those painful experiments, you were right by my side.
Back then, if you had just reached out to hold me, comfort me, I would have chosen to forgive you.
But you did nothing.
I can forgive your helpless actions, but why would you be this cruel?
Twenty plus years and I haven’t received any affection from you.
Is this what a grandfather should do?”
“This, I…” Luo Qishan was momentarily at a loss for words, not knowing what to say.
To express his own stance, he forced himself not to care about Luo’er anymore and treated him as a research object in front of others.
Yet, he never imagined that this approach would bring such immense hurt to Luo’er.
“I’ve always understood your helplessness, understood that you don’t dare confront the nation, and I get that all of this was merely a compromise.
But are you really so heartless?
I am your grandson!
Couldn’t you offer me even a sliver of comfort?” Luo’er stared back at him, with bloodshot eyes, questioning him.
“I-I-I…
sorry, sorry, sorry!” Luo Qishan finally succumbed to an emotional breakdown, holding his head in his hands and crying out loud, filled with regret.
“Can you let me go?” Luo’er looked at the devastated Luo Qishan, speaking quietly.
Luo Qishan held his head in his hands, weeping.
The elderly man finally could no longer suppress the emotions that had built up over decades, and he started to sob uncontrollably.
Luo’er slowly went forward and took his father’s picture from the table, examining it before putting it back in its place.
He reached the door, then suddenly shouted, “Grandpa!”
Luo Qishan looked up in surprise, his eyes red-rimmed from weeping.
“Look at me, it’s time for us to part ways.
Goodbye!” Luo’er said, paused for a moment, then turned around and muttered quietly, “I hope this isn’t a forever goodbye.”
With that, he left the office, his face stony, ignoring Luo Qishan.
As he walked the lengthy corridor, Luo’er felt a sudden pang in his nose, and tears involuntarily trickled down his cheeks.
He raised his hand to gently wipe away the tears, but could no longer suppress his grief.
He closed his eyes and began to sob quietly.
When he reached the Political Examination Office, the other members of his squad had all finished their evaluation and were waiting outside.
At the sight of Luo’er, everyone turned to look at him.
“Luo’er, why are your eyes red?
Did you cry?” Seeing Luo’er’s condition, Tangmo couldn’t help but move to comfort him.
“It’s nothing.” Luo’er shook his head, forcing a smile.
“Luo’er, if you need to cry, you can look for me, okay?” Tangmo said, reaching out to wipe the tears off his eyelashes, yet Luo’er blocked his hand.
“I understand, Sister Moumou!” Luo’er said awkwardly, looking at the others.
“Luo’er, only you’re left.
Once you’re done, we’ll officially become the Advance Team!” Hu Daoke called out excitedly to Luo’er.
“What’s the rush?” asked Cheng Ziang, looking at the excited Hu Daoke beside him, not hiding his annoyance.
“That’s the Otherworld!
People get excited just to go abroad, and it’s even more magnificent to leave Earth.
But we’re going directly to an entirely different world!” Hu Daoke proclaimed, waving his hands excitedly.
Cheng Ziang sighed and said, “If you jump off a tall building, you’d also end up in a different world!”
“When people die, they lose consciousness; you’re such a heretic with your subjective idealism!” Hu Daoke argued righteously.
Cheng Ziang opened his mouth, yet he didn’t know how to respond.
It was rare for this guy to spout such philosophical words, leaving him somewhat caught off guard.
“Have all of you passed?” Luo’er stepped in to lighten the mood, looking at everyone as he asked.
“Certainly!” Hu Daoke and Tangmo nodded confidently.
“You too…” Luo’er looked at Baiyue in disbelief.
Upon sensing Luo’er’s gaze, she too nodded her head.
“Okay, then please wait for me here!” Luo’er nodded, and then turned to enter the examination room.
As soon as he stepped in, he immediately noticed Wang Xu sitting across from him which somewhat surprised him.
It seems like this guy was everywhere in the academy.
“Wang Xu, you’re the examiner?” Luo’er looked around the sparse room equipped with only one table, two chairs, and the computer on the table.
Aside from Wang Xu and himself, there was no third person present.
“I forgot to tell you,” Wang Xu motioned for him to sit down, then slowly stood up, “I am about to take on the duty as the highest commander of the United Nations Frontline Command for Otherworld combat operations, A.K.A., your future boss!”
“Didn’t expect that, you’ve got some skills!” Luo’er sat down, looking at him with a teasing gaze.
“It’s not like I enjoy it, it’s a life-threatening business.” Wang Xu shrugged his shoulders.
For him, going to the Otherworld was tantamount to a slow death, and the damage was irreversible.
Even though the magical energy near the Otherworld Gate wasn’t that dense, he could only stay there for a maximum of two months at a time before he had to withdraw and rest.
After seeing Luo’er settled, Wang Xu activated the computer’s AI with a wave of his arm: “Area lockdown, initiate level two encryption!”
“Understood, initiating lockdown encryption!” A synthetic voice came from the computer.
Shortly after, the doors and windows in the room were sealed off by soundproof panels.
The AI activated a secure communication channel to headquarters and locked it tight.
“Alright, it may be a political assessment, but it’s actually just a chat!” Wang Xu turned off his computer, stood up, and walked towards the now sealed window.
“Chat about what?” Luo’er wasn’t feeling on edge when facing Wang Xu.
“Chat about the international situation and things like that.
You know, what I’ve been reciting to you!” Wang Xu replied, laughing.
Luo’er bowed his head in silence for a moment before slowly asking, “So, what’s the current situation?”
“Alright, since you’re at this point, let’s talk about it.
Not just about Earth, but also the Otherworld.”
Wang Xu walked over to the table, turned on the screen, and a map of the Aels Continent was displayed.
Because the Otherworld Gate replaced the Aels boulder, people from Earth habitually referred to the Otherworld continent as the Aels Continent.
“To the north of the continent, in the Aud People’s Kingdom, a kingdom has experienced severe internal strife.
That is the Masaya Kingdom in the northeast.
Six months ago, Gudelv I, the orthodox King of Odelanqi in the northwest who represents the Aud people, petitioned the United Nations headquarters, hoping that the United Nations could send peacekeeping forces to station in the Otherworld and stabilize the internal strife in the Masaya Kingdom.”
“What does internal strife in the Otherworld have to do with Earth people?
Could it be that there really will be countries sending troops to the Otherworld?” Luo’er asked confusedly.
“Of course,” Wang Xu smiled and then continued, “There are plenty of them, you should understand one thing.
Since the Second Otherworld War, the countries of Earth are constantly coveting the land of the Otherworld, hoping to complete the second age of exploration before colonizing the universe.” ƒreewebηoveℓ.com
“The Otherworld is rich in mineral deposits and resources, which are indispensable for mankind to start the era of cosmic migration.
At the same time, the Otherworld has also become a perfect place to divert Earth’s conflicts.
Our relationship with the United States has become tense since the early twenties of this century, and it continued to escalate in the fifties.
If it had not been for the appearance of the Otherworld, it is hard to ensure that World War III would not break out on Earth.”
“At present, each country on Earth is trying every means to expand its sphere of influence in the Otherworld and choose partners for cooperation.
The most conspicuous of these are the five permanent member nations of the UN Security Council.
If we can take this opportunity of the revolt to station troops in the Otherworld and expand our sphere of influence, then the new Cold War era will start for us on Earth, and the contradictions between the major world powers can be transferred and resolved in the Otherworld.”
“Sending troops for garrison, expanding spheres of influence.
Isn’t that colonization?” Luo’er suddenly asked.
“Of course not, the colonial era has passed for a century.
Non-interference in other countries’ internal affairs has always been our principle.
Our method is cooperation, cooperating with various countries in the Otherworld to expand our sphere of influence.”
“Since it’s already decided to deploy troops, dispatching the so-called Otherworld advance team seems redundant, not to mention the hasty selection process this time!” Luo’er couldn’t help but complain about the monotone of the selection competition.
“It’s not that we can go if we want to,” Wang Xu shrugged and said, “There are always unstable factors in the Otherworld.
A strength is constantly resisting the stationing of Earth’s military forces in the Otherworld.”
“Strength?”
“Yes, the Church.
The largest religious power of the human race in the northern part of the Otherworld.” Wang Xu opened the information on the Church Court, then said, “The full name of the Church is the Church of Light, a religious organization that worships light, worships the sun.
Their organization structure is similar to the Vatican, and there are rumors that Western Christianity originates from the Church of Light in the Otherworld.”
“The Church controls all the mages in the northern countries of the human race, and stipulates that only nobles can study magic.
Aside from this, they also have two major military organizations, the elite Temple Knights and the Heretics Judgment Group.
They also control public opinion and have considerable influence among the human kingdoms.”
“What are they resisting?” Luo’er asked.
“Earth’s military!”
“Why?”
“The Church is an extremely conservative organization, they are against the disruption of the existing order in the Otherworld by the appearance of Earth’s military forces.
For them, maintaining the existing order is of utmost importance.
Once the Otherworld kingdoms secularize with the help of Earthlings, the Church will lose its current influence and become of no standing.”
“Isn’t that supposed to be the case?
Earth’s military will disrupt the order of the Otherworld, harming their interests; so isn’t it natural for them to resist?” Luo’er spread his hands and asked.
“That’s from the standpoint of the Church that you’re thinking, so it’s only natural.
You should understand one thing, no Otherworld kingdoms want to be ruled by the Church forever, and they will ultimately achieve religious reform; it’s only a matter of time.
What we should consider is not this issue.
What we should consider is whether or not to deploy troops to the Otherworld at this perfect moment of time, and expand our influence and sphere of control.
In the face of tangible benefits, rather than sticking to righteous clamors, it is better to seize the opportunity to gain more benefits, which is what a qualified government should do.”
“So what is our mission exactly?” Luo’er couldn’t help but ask.
