Chapter 18: 17. Good student, bad student

After saying goodbye to Huo Feng, Lin Qianqian returned home with her head hung low.

As she walked, she stared down at her phone, playing with it; the screen displayed the WeChat app, with the contact name set as ’Brother Feng’.

Perhaps feeling that she hadn’t talked enough with Huo Feng, she sent him a string of four or five messages in a row.

Using all sorts of coy and cutesy words, she asked Huo Feng to invite her out again to hang out.

It was clear that Lin Qianqian was looking forward to having the opportunity to play with Huo Feng.

After all, Huo Feng, who had once been the School Tyrant at No.1 Middle School, was always a major heartthrob for these young girls!

However, her messages to Huo Feng sank like stones in the sea; she received not a single reply, all the way until she got home.

Lin Qianqian pouted, contemplating whether to send a voice message to Huo Feng when suddenly, a roar erupted from her home!

"Lin Qianqian! Come here and explain to me why you only scored four points on your English test!"

But before Lin Qianqian could even respond, her mother, Wu Cuidi, burst out of the house, furious and brandishing the test paper.

The next second, as Lin Qianqian tried to flee, Wu Cuidi, quick as lightning, caught her by the arm. Eyes bulging with anger, she shouted, "You dare try to run! With such grades, you dare run from me!"

Lin Qianqian weakly tried to explain, "Mom, it was an accident..."

"Accident my ass! Look at this garbage grade, does it justify the $5800 I spent on your tuition this term!" Wu Cuidi yelled, her spittle flying a meter away.

"How long have you been hiding this test paper in your backpack? You wouldn’t have shown it to me if I didn’t search, would you?! Are you trying to kill me with anger?!" Wu Cuidi was so mad she jabbed a finger at Lin Qianqian’s forehead.

She jabbed her three times, causing Lin Qianqian to hurriedly cover her head for protection, muttering under her breath, "That’s why I said you shouldn’t have looked..."

"What do you mean I shouldn’t have looked! With grades like this shit, shouldn’t I know about them?"

Wu Cuidi seethed, tearing the test paper in half with two quick motions, "Why even bother with school! You’re just wasting money studying! Starting tomorrow, you’re not going to school anymore!"

Lin Qianqian, pushed to her limit, retorted, "Mom, what are you doing!"

"I’m saying you shouldn’t go to school anymore! You can’t make the grades, all you care about is dressing up! Playing! Look at the kid across from us, first in the whole city for the middle school exams!"

Wu Cuidi, agitated, pointed directly across the way, at Pu Sangzhi’s front door.

Just then, Sangzhi and her daughter Chen Huifen were at their kitchen window, which was wide open, washing dishes.

The mother and daughter silently witnessed a full-blown verbal battle and were even used as an example... pointed right at them!

"Look at them! They stay home on weekends and never dress up like a peacock to go out and play! Not like you, dolling yourself up and painting your face all fancy at such a young age - going out to chase boys!"

"And look at them! Always willing to help her mother with household chores, buying groceries, cooking, washing dishes, mopping the floor! What about you? You can’t even eat without being called!"

"You need to take a good look at them! They study so conscientiously, proactively asking teachers for test papers! And you..."

For a solid three minutes, Wu Cuidi’s unflinching finger pointed at Sangzhi, hysterically praising her while vilifying Lin Qianqian.

Awkwardly standing at the window, Sangzhi and Chen Huifen considered closing it but felt it would be impolite; leaving it open, however, was extremely embarrassing...

Sangzhi had become the ’child of someone else’s family’ in Wu Cuidi’s rantings, an exemplar ’good child’.

In Wu Cuidi’s portrayal, Sangzhi was the gold, and Lin Qianqian... just a lump of shit!

After enduring three minutes of non-stop insult, Lin Qianqian’s fiery temper flared up, and she retorted to Wu Cuidi, "Then go find someone else to be your daughter! If you despise me so much, isn’t it okay for me to just leave!"

Wu Cuidi’s eyes grew even wider as she yelled back, "You dare to shout at me! You score four points and still dare to yell at me!"

With tears in her eyes, Lin Qianqian shouted back, "That’s right, I can’t score well! I am just dumb! So what! If you can’t stand me, well, I don’t need you either!"

After shouting, Lin Qianqian ran into the house and straight to her room, slamming the door with a loud ’bang’.

Wu Cuidi also stormed inside, cursing as she chased after Lin Qianqian’s retreating figure.

The whole scene left Sangzhi in stunned silence.

Sangzhi had always been a good girl, a good student, and had never once fought with her parents. Because of this, she found it hard to believe that parents and children could ever argue like this.

Only after both mother and daughter had left did Chen Huifen slowly close the window, bowed her head to continue washing dishes, and said, "The girl across the street is in her third year of junior high. Her grades are terrible. That kind of quarrel is common in their house. I’m used to it."

"Is it because of the poor grades that they’re fighting like this?" Pu Sangzhi was shocked.

"Yeah."

Chen Huifen nodded, "She’s a nice person normally, often comes over to chat with me, brings gifts. It’s just that her daughter’s grades are so poor, she doesn’t like studying, and spends all her time out having fun. They’ve spent a lot of money on tutoring for her, but it hasn’t helped, so that’s why she’s become so desperate."

Upon hearing this, Pu Sangzhi began to understand Wu Cuidi’s shrewish behavior. She nodded, still somewhat puzzled, "I really don’t get it, why don’t these kids just study? Even if they don’t like it, isn’t it a student’s duty to learn?"

Chen Huifen agreed, "Right... I don’t know what these children are thinking."

Chen Huifen’s words unintentionally made Pu Sangzhi think of Huo Feng.

She wondered what on earth was going on in Hu Feng’s head?

She wondered how Huo Feng, such a bad student, was treated at home?

Would Huo Feng’s parents also be this harsh with him?

Huo Feng was so terrifying, did his parents... dare?

...

However, Huo Feng’s father, every second of every minute, never stopped thinking about wanting to slaughter Huo Feng!

At midday, on the 12th floor of Mingzhu Building, Huo Mingshan, carrying his briefcase, returned home.

The first thing he did after taking off his shoes was to ask his wife Shen Yu, "Where’s that little brat Huo Feng?"

Shen Yu calmly took the briefcase from Huo Mingshan, responding as if it were nothing new, "Playing on the computer in his room. What, has he provoked you again this week?"

Huo Mingshan squeezed his tie, loosening it as he spoke fiercely, "Call him out for me, I have to give him a good lesson today!"

Shen Yu found him a pair of slippers, "Don’t you know your son? Once he’s started a game, not even the end of the world will get him out."

Huo Mingshan asked, "League of Legends?"

Shen Yu nodded.

Excellent!

Clapping his hands together, Huo Mingshan didn’t even bother to change his slippers, and went straight to grab a chair and rush to the door, locating their house’s circuit breaker.

With a "click", Huo Mingshan turned off the main power switch!

"Hey..."

Shen Yu stood in the doorway, looking helplessly at Huo Mingshan’s childish antics.

Huo Mingshan, with his corpulent body, climbed down from the stool with some difficulty, and casually grabbed a pair of shoes from the doormat, one for each hand.

He tiptoed to the door, gesturing "shhh" to Shen Yu, then waited in ambush.

One second, two seconds...

"Mom! Why is the power out?"

A frantic voice came from inside, it was Huo Feng.

Without blinking an eye, Shen Yu replied, "The power must have tripped."

"What’s going on? I’ll check..."

Huo Feng rushed over in a panic, getting closer to the door, and closer to his doom...

Just as he reached the door, Shen Yu stepped out of the house, and Huo Mingshan took her place, pouncing forward!

In that instant, Huo Feng, unable to stop in time, charged forward and was smacked hard by the shoe in Huo Mingshan’s hand!

"Smack"...

So crisp, it was as if the sound of Huo Feng’s nasal bone breaking could be heard.
