Chapter 191: Chapter 191 - Scent tracking

The ground beneath Yunfeng’s feet gave a subtle but ominous tremble. A distant, thunderous trumpet rang out—low, raw, and echoing through the skeletal remains of the city.

He froze.

That sound... it was unmistakable.

An elephant.

He turned his head toward the direction of the zoo, his breath catching in his throat. His instincts screamed danger.

but it didn’t sound like that dangerous beasts call he had heard before.

sound of blast and bullets echoed in the empty city.

Yunfeng’s jaw clenched. He was stuck between a rock and a hard place—Kailun was somewhere behind him, maybe close, maybe close to the zoo. But Muchen had gone ahead, possibly just moments ago.

His hand hovered near his heart. What if Muchen needed him? What if he was hurt? Every second he stood there felt like betrayal.

And yet... what if he ran the wrong way?

The thought hit like a stone.

The city was a labyrinth of abandoned buildings, shattered glass, and filled with undead. Muchen could have ducked into any store, any crevice. He could be lying unconscious somewhere while Yunfeng ran straight past him.

His breath quickened. His legs tensed.

he hesitated for a second but dashed ahead. standing around desperately was useless. he had to make an effort to search for him.

soft coo broke through his panic.

The little monkey around his neck stirred, its tiny hands gripping his collar. Yunfeng blinked down. "What is it?" he whispered.

The monkey’s head nodded insistently toward the left. It cooed again, louder this time, one small arm pointing through the dusty air, down a cracked street leading toward the left highway.

Yunfeng’s eyes narrowed. "You smell something?"

The monkey let out a louder cry, bouncing slightly.

Then it hit him—of course. Why hadn’t he thought of it sooner?

Alphas and omegas, when caught in fear, danger, or desperation, released strong waves of pheromones. And Muchen... Muchen’s natural scent was like fresh rose petals, rich and unforgettable.

Yunfeng turned his head slowly and sniffed the air, closing his eyes. His sense of smell, usually kept under control, flared to life.

There—subtle at first, but it was there. The heady, floral trace of roses.

And beneath that, even fainter but undeniable—agarwood.

His heart stilled. "Muchen..." he whispered.

Without another moment’s hesitation, he tightened the straps of his bag, patted the monkey’s head, and sprinted left. "You’re right. You’re so right," he told the little creature, voice breaking with emotion.

The monkey chittered excitedly and held on tight as Yunfeng tore through the abandoned street, weaving past overturned carts and crumbling pavement. The scent grew stronger with each step.

The ground beneath him suddenly gave a violent tremble, like something massive had landed nearby. Yunfeng stumbled, catching himself against the side of a rusted car.

Then he heard it—the thunderous pounding of feet.

He hid behind a car and looked behind him.

Two elephants.

Yunfeng froze up in shock. They most likely came from the zoo. With the way they are running something must have spooked them.

They came thundered down the street ahead of him like terrified giants, barreling into the opposite highway. Their ears flapped wildly, trunks high in the air, screaming in trumpeted panic that echoed through the buildings.

Yunfeng’s eyes widened as he ducked into a hollowed-out store entrance, pulling the monkey close against his chest.

They weren’t infected.

At least—not yet.

The larger one was a full-grown mother, her dusty gray hide streaked with dried blood, not her own. Her tusks were cracked but not broken, her muscles still rippling with power. Behind her, almost hidden in her shadow, was a smaller elephant—her calf. It clung to her tail with its trunk, running for its life.

Yunfeng could barely breathe.

It was like watching a family escape hell.

But hell followed quickly.

The sound of moaning rose from behind the buildings—dozens, no, hundreds of zombies. The elephants had drawn attention with their thundering feet and anguished cries. Yunfeng watched, frozen, as the first of the undead lunged from the side alleys.

One leapt straight onto the calf’s back.

Its rotting hands gripped the small elephant’s sides and bit deep into the thick hide.

The calf let out a high-pitched, heart-wrenching scream, stumbling.

"No," Yunfeng whispered, horror widening his eyes.

The mother elephant roared, swinging her trunk and tusks to batter the creatures off her baby, flinging one zombie straight into a wall with a sickening crunch. She stomped furiously, spinning to shield her calf, but it was like trying to stop a flood with bare hands.

More and more came.

Zombies swarmed over them like ants, crawling over the mother’s back, biting, tearing.

Yunfeng clutched the monkey tighter as the calf wailed and dropped to its knees. He couldn’t tear his eyes away.

Why... why do they bite through elephant hide like that?

Elephant skin was thick—he knew that. As humans, it would take powerful tools to pierce it. But these zombies... their jaws moved like steel traps. Their teeth seemed sharper, their bites impossibly strong. And it wasn’t just one or two—there were dozens, maybe a hundred now, clawing, biting, consuming.

The calf went still first.

And then the mother.

Her last trumpet echoed through the city like a mourning song. It rattled Yunfeng’s bones. freeωebnovēl.c૦m

Then silence.

Only the gnashing sounds of tearing flesh remained.

Yunfeng leaned back against the wall, a lump caught in his throat. "The history never mentioned that the zombies would be this dangerous little one.. if I had knows I would have just kidnapped Muchen with me and kept everyone one of my loved ones safe. I was an idiot. I was so fucking stupid...." he whispered.

His chest hurt. His eyes stung.

The monkey whimpered softly, burying its face in his collar.

He wiped his face roughly with his sleeve. Why? Why were the infected evolving like this?

These weren’t just reanimated bodies anymore.

They were growing stronger.

Their instincts sharper.

They could jump higher.

Bite deeper.

Hunt smarter.

And if they could rip apart an elephant...

What would they do to them?
