But even as I smiled at the sight, a thought nagged at me.

Where was Seraphiel?

And the elves?

Seraphiel led the elves deeper into Lumi Forest.

They were awestruck.

Wide, tear-glass eyes took in the towering trees, the birdsong echoing through the wilderness, the vibrant green leaves fluttering like tiny flags of life. For elves who had spent years shackled in cages of the lionkin ranches… this was salvation.

A young elf, barely more than a girl, reached out and brushed her fingers over the bark of a tree, as if unsure it was real. An older woman dropped to her knees with her hands trembling as she cradled a flower blooming by a root.

Her tears flowed freely.

A few of the younger ones, who tended to be more playful than the older folk despite everything they'd endured, glanced toward Seraphiel as they walked.

"You won the lottery, didn't you?" one of them teased. "Freedom, an amazing healer class, and a powerful man who loves you dearly?"

Seraphiel smiled, brushing a blonde strand of hair behind her ear. "I did," she admitted softly.

Another chuckled. "Seriously though, how'd you meet him? Someone like that doesn't just fall from the sky."

"I was a sex slave," she said in a quiet, unashamed voice. "Quinlan bought me."

They all froze.

Gasps rang out like birds startled from trees, and more than a few looks turned confused… or worried.

"He didn't—" one of the older women began, eyes narrowing in protective instinct toward a young girl like Seraphiel.

"No," she interrupted, shaking her head, eyes twinkling with something fond and warm. "He never touched me without my consent. He's too proud for that. He's…" Her smile deepened into something secret. "He's a 'certified gentleman.'"

The way she giggled after saying it drew out surprised laughter. The kind that only came after too much pain and too little joy.

A few more minutes of walking brought them into a wide clearing. The air smelled of earth and fresh growth. It was quiet. Peaceful. Sacred.

Seraphiel turned, glancing at the group behind her. "I think you'll love it here."

Letting them explore to their heart's content, she slowly made her way over to Elirya, who stood near the edge of the clearing, clutching her daughter's body like it was her only tether to this world. Her eyes were red, but no tears fell, for she had cried too much already.

Seraphiel placed a gentle hand on her back.

"Elirya," she said softly. "Back when he lifted all of us with the wind… you saw it, right?"

The woman didn't look at her, but her chin dipped slightly. A nod.

"No human can do that. Not like him. That much control over the elements? That kind of grace in casting? He didn't even intone any words… That's something else entirely."

Elirya's voice was hoarse. "What is he, then?"

Seraphiel looked out over the clearing, then back to the mother beside her. "He's like a human version of Luminara."

Elirya recoiled. "That's heresy!" she hissed, looking like she was afraid the trees might hear.

But then her brows furrowed.

Memories flickered in her eyes—of spells cast with unnatural ease, of air that obeyed without being summoned, of a presence that felt too vast to belong to a man.

"Are you being truthful…?" she asked with a shaky voice.

Seraphiel nodded.

"Yes. And more than that," she whispered, leaning in close. "He's her son."

Elirya blinked. "Her… son?"

"Luminara is alive, for she is a primordial, a race that enjoys eternal youth. But she'd been sealed away where us mortals can't reach her… But Quinlan can. He's a newborn of their mystical race, which prompted the motherly Luminara to adopt him when he first met her. They have a truly fond bond with each other. He named this forest Lumi Forest after her. So…

It was the mother who finished it for her. Elirya's lips trembled as she muttered, "My daughter can rest here… in a forest blessed and protected by none other than Luminara's blood."

She clutched her daughter tighter.

And then, she let herself cry again. It was as if her body had found a way to produce new tears for her to shed despite her being unable to cry before.

However, these weren't hollow sobs of despair, but something deeper. Heavier. A release of grief kissed by grace. Sorrow, at last, met with meaning.

And as she wept, the wind threaded gently through the trees, curling around her like an unseen embrace.

"Here, she'll never be alone again," Seraphiel whispered with a trembling, emotional tone. "The forest will carry her breath in the wind, cradle her memory in its roots."

Elirya choked out a question between her sobs. "Is this… the Eternal Forest?"

Seraphiel shook her head slowly. And before the mother could spiral further into sorrow, she added:

"No. This is something far greater."

She turned her eyes upward, to the canopy above, where the sunlight danced through the leaves like sacred fire.

"The Eternal Forest only carries Luminara's blessing… but this place?"

She gestured around them, to the vibrant trees, the gentle river's murmur in the distance, the life that pulsed beneath the soil.

"This forest is blessed by Luminara. Its people are blessed by the human Primordial, Mearie. Its river is blessed by Katalin, Quinlan's trueborn mother. And all of it—all of it—is guarded by the Primordial Villain…"

She looked back to Elirya, her voice was steady now.

"… Who is a man ready to kill millions to save a single person he cares about."

The grieving elven mother was silent for a long moment.

Then she leaned down and pressed a kiss to her daughter's forehead.

"Perhaps…" she murmured in a voice so soft it was barely more than a breath, "perhaps what this cruel world needs… isn't a hero preaching lofty dreams and ideals, but a villain willing to do whatever it takes… no matter how deeply he must dirty his hands."
