Chapter 142: Tousou (The Battle) 6

Carlisle Freed stood now. "They’re doing it..." novelbuddy.cσ๓

Lysandra’s eyes narrowed. "Full-beam release."

Sylvia stepped back. "That much power in the dome? It’s going to overload the reinforcement seals..."

The Dean said nothing, his monocle glowing faintly as he subtly reinforced the barrier.

"RRRRAAAAGHHHHHHHH!!"

Tyrron unleashed it first, a near literal tsunami of emerald light roared from his hands, spiraling with inner black veins like it had a soul of magma. It warped space as it traveled, leaving a trail of broken gravity in its wake.

Kaizer’s eyes widened sharply, not in fear, but expectation.

His lips twitched. "Here it comes!"

His own beam erupted as he shouted out a grunt of exertion, a spiraling lance of blue lightning fired from his hands like a railgun shot through dimensions.

Where Tyrron’s power surged and shattered, Kaizer’s beam bent and tunneled, spinning with microscopic feedback coils that amplified with every meter.

And then...

BOOM!

The beams collided mid-air, causing a singularity of light to erupt at the center that detonated in silence first, before the sound arrived, which was like the world itself took a second to process the violence.

A spherical shockwave blasted outward from the clash point, flattening clouds, cracking the sky shield, and making the entire arena tremble like it was a canoe during a storm.

The clash of ultimate power had begun.

On the right side, Tyrron snarled, pushing with everything he had.

His arms bulged, lightning crashing from his shoulders as his feet dug into the obsidian platform. Green flames of elemental power exploded around him, his breath heaving.

"You’re dead, OVERLORD!" He bellowed.

On the left, Kaizer stood perfectly still in a focused horse-stance like movement.

His beam, while smaller, was denser, much like a compressed star.

It flickered with not just blue light, but traces of violet, as his control deepened.

And then, he did some thing crazy.

Kaizer closed his eyes.

Time slowed down in his perception as his brain’s speed suddenly accelerated by using psychic enhancement.

The roar of beams, the screaming crowd, the thunderous clash, none of it reached him anymore in this slowed time.

Kaizer stood behind the raging column of blue lightning with arms extended, his focus seemingly absolute, and in that moment—between pulses of raw power—his mind turned inward.

What is psychic power, really?

It wasn’t just a force or an element, nor was it something conjured from nowhere like a flame or a stone.

It was the byproduct of the mind.

Every stray thought, every flicker of awareness, every breath of consciousness... it all fed into something deeper.

The energy of thought itself, the weight of feelings never spoken and the tension behind every decision.

That was the fuel of psychic power.

The average human had a reservoir, akin to a quiet lake within them. A still pool of mindstuff they drew from subconsciously for everyday thinking.

They thought, they felt, they dreamed, but they never actually actively used it.

But Kaizer...

His psychic power formed a sea churned beneath the surface. It was like a miniature ocean in comparison to other humans, vast and always expanding slowly like most other psychics.

The sea of psychic power swirled with clarity, intent, and force.

But his enormous psychic power was not just because he was an esper, but because of the anomaly that made him special and suitable to sit at the top.

Endless Growth.

With every kill done by him directly, the quiet lake in every human’s mind was dragged out and absorbed by his own sea, purified by Rina’s death power to remove any residual traces and merge perfectly with his own naturally.

Kaizer had always taken this for granted but after training with the Dean and unlocking his own mindscape and perfecting his telepathy, he realized something else.

If psychic power is condensed from mental activity and mental activity is born from emotion...

His gaze flicked to Tyrron’s side of the clash, filled with green lightning spiraling violently as the fellow roared his heart out.

Then why was he still fighting his foe with cold logic?

Tyrron was rage. Tyrron was chaos. His lightning roared because his soul screamed.

Kaizer’s power had always been precision, will, intellect.

But precision wouldn’t win this beam clash because Tyrron had infinite energy beneath his feet but Kaizer didn’t unless he diverted some of his attention to go on a killing spree.

Then what would?

He dug deeper, and not into his strength, but into his feelings that were buried so deep within him that they had seemed to never be there.

The shame of being different, able to sense emotions since he was ten years old.

The loneliness of understanding the true nature of humans and that he would never have a true connection.

The fury at what happened at Al-Rafid and on the train at Beta City.

The grief that came when Rina cried on his shoulder for his safety in the hospital ward.

The fear that he felt after the car explosion on the highway that he would implicate his family, not even daring to go home until his father called to reassure him.

And the love—raw and unspoken—for those who still stood beside him anyway, his father, mother, aunt Katherine, his new friends in the Overlord Force.

Rina.

It all surged up from the depths of his mind, the placid young man who sealed them standing opposite mental image of an energetic young man with a lively nature.

Condense it. Feel it. Don’t reject it.

The two mental images touched palms, as if connected through glass and the barrier broke.

Kaizer exhaled and allowed every one of those thoughts to pour into him, churning up the stagnant, still sea within his mindscape that boiled upward and then fed the stream of lightning before him.

The beam shimmered then sharpened, its hue deepening from pale blue to a near-violet blaze as new force surged through it.

’I am Kaizer Lunin... and this is my mind.’ Kaizer’s thoughts were clear, embracing all of himself for once.

And with that, the battle immediately shifted as the Overlord had stopped thinking and started feeling.

BOOOOOOOOMMMM!!!

His beam surged forward with doubled power that smashed against the focus of the clash hard.

So hard in fact, the central point of the clash began bending backward, Tyrron’s side faltering as his own body started cracking under the return force.

"NO! NO, HOW CAN THIS BE?!" Tyrron screamed, planting his feet harder, lightning exploding from his mouth to add to his own beam.

But Kaizer’s beam kept pushing forward, like an unstoppable force for power.

In the stands, the instructors stood as one.

"His beam... it’s dominating!" Lysandra gasped.

Dean Rochester said nothing, but his hand clenched faintly. "He’s finally doing it."

Kaizer’s entire body was now encased in spirit-shaped lightning, each muscle perfectly outlined.

"Push past!" He roared with an expression of effort, his eyes uncharacteristically wild rather than calm.

His psychic field shrieked, far eclipsing Tyrron’s roar, until finally...

ZZZHM!

The green beam shattered into spirals and was consumed by the blue wave.

Tyrron shouted in anger as the last of his power was overwhelmed, his body struck by the cannon like a divine decree.

He was blasted backward, flung across the arena and into the far wall, embedding there in a smoking crater.

........

The world blurred.

One moment Kaizer stood at the center of a superstorm of lightning and fury, his thoughts surging with emotion.

And the next, he found himself... somewhere else.

A breeze passed, calm and fragrant, like the sigh of a planet that had never known war.

He opened his eyes, revealing himself to be within a meadowland.

This place was verdant and endless, with sunlight the color of gold and a wind that carried the scent of ancient forests.

Above him, a giant tree stood that was towering and endless, with roots that reached the horizon and leaves that seemed older than time itself.

Seated atop one of its lower branches was a woman.

She had skin like rich loam and hair woven from moss and stars, flowing down her back like vines given life.

Her gown was spun from petals, bark, and glowing pollen, yet shimmered like glass. Her ears curved to fine points, and her gaze was deep enough to drown the world in.

She looked down at the two of them with eyes the color of dew on morning grass.

Kaizer knelt instinctively, bowing his head.

"Greetings, Lady Gaia." He whispered respectfully.

Beside him, Tyrron stood with arms folded, looking away, a faint blush on his face. "Tch! Not this again."

Gaia smiled softly, the kind that could calm storms.

"Rise, child. Both of you." she said, her voice like rivers over stone.

Kaizer obeyed.

"I have watched your journey from the earth, Kaizer Lunin. You are more than you appear and far more than you understand." She continued.

Her eyes softened with something between sorrow and pride. "But beware... for while I cradle this world, Terra has awakened. The Earth as humanity dreams it, formed from industry, despair, and cold design."

Gaia shook her head. "It is a consciousness born not of nature, but of collective human will. And unfortunately, it has marked you, Kaizer. When your strength blooms fully... it will come for you."

Kaizer’s breath caught. "Why me?"

"Because you are a vessel that grows without end. And Terra..." She trailed off, lowering her gaze.

...Well, she seeks a body strong enough to carry all of mankind’s sins." Gaia finished sadly.

The winds stilled as Kaizer’s breath caught, understanding the stakes had been raised to the highest level all of a sudden.

Then Gaia turned her attention to Tyrron.

"My son," she said warmly.

"Don’t say it like that! Makes it weird." Tyrron muttered, rubbing the back of his neck.

"You were born of my blessing and a powerful esper who loved the soil more than his own name. However, the world needs more than raw force now, it needs balance." She reached out, stroking the tree’s bark.

She glanced between them, eyes sparkling.

"So I ask this not as a goddess, but as a mother."

Her words slowed, softened.

"Take him in Kaizer, bring him into your fold. Let my son stand as your strength and shield. Let him govern the wild places and remind your kind what it means to live WITH this Earth, not just on it."

Kaizer looked to Tyrron. The brute was still scowling... but his stance had shifted.

Less guarded, and more willing.

Kaizer nodded slowly. "I’ll accept him, if he will have me."

Gaia smiled. "Then let the storm pass. And return to your path."

She waved a single finger, and the world unraveled like a ball of yarn.

..........

Silence.

The arena didn’t breathe.

Then, the dust cleared.

Kaizer stood there, shoulders heaving, his fists lowered as his eyes were coming back into focus, blue lightning still dancing faintly on his back.

And Tyrron... was out seemingly out cold.

With that as a backdrop, the announcement was made for the second match of the gauntlet.

Kaizer Lunin wins.
