Psychic Overlord-Chapter 86: Fear
Chapter 86: Fear
In truth, Kaizer was truly alarmed. He had not predicted that their enemies would strike so soon, not because he did not think they had the audacity, but because he did not think they would even be able to find them.
Their combat suits had anti-detection and anti-radar tech, so satellites and cameras could not pick up their traces. They dropped from the air at crazy speed during the cloudy night, Kaizer controlling their descent to be as inconspicuous as possible.
He even used Telekinesis to lift them all off the ground and zip around the city silently until they randomly chose this house, then fortified it to be a safehouse. He was 99% certain that their enemies would not be able to find them here, so he slept soundly.
However, before going to bed, he placed a psychic barrier around the women in the room not for protection, but to make sure that they did not wake up in the middle of the night and creep into his bedroll to try and tempt him.
He did this because the thought briefly passed through Maria’s mind, and she tried to hide it, but Kaizer still heard it. Thinking that Rina might also try that, he put the strongest psychic barrier around his sister and relatively strong ones around the others.
Who knew?
Who knew that his casual action brought about by the playful thoughts of his companions would end up being the thing that saved their group? Given how they were all sleeping like dead logs, if this skilled assassin had taken out Julia, he could have killed the others quietly assuming there was no barrier around them.
Kaizer was truly frightened this time.
In truth, Malek had given Kaizer too much credit. The flashy tag of ’Overlord’ along with S-class esper and the future strongest made him seem like a young genius here to gain experience in a low-level battle zone, where everyone within was in his grasp.
This was partly true. The fact was that Kaizer did not have any military training whatsoever, usually living in mansions or villas where the security and privacy were high, so he slept without any form of caution or alertness.
Sitting up from his bedroll slowly, Kaizer’s expression was grim as he acknowledged his failure and carelessness as a squad leader. Even though they were subservient to him and had easily been suppressed by him, both Julia and Maria were top-tier A-list espers who had great power and utility.
Let’s not even talk about Sophia, who was literally his mentor’s own flesh-and-blood daughter that the dean clearly cherished since his mentor sent her to ’liaise’ with him and forge a connection between their families.
The death of any of them due to his lack of foresight would come with bitter consequences. freёweɓnovel.com
And so, fear turned to anger.
Kaizer glanced at Malek, who was frozen on the spot, endless sweat forming on his forehead as his eyes were full of pleading. The man had put Kaizer on a pedestal, thinking that he was an unbeatable creature akin to a final boss, and that reverence only increased after his assassination failed.
Kaizer lifted a finger and made him float gently out of his bedroll, silently seizing Malek and dragging the helpless fellow out the window in which he came, reaching the nearby rooftop in utter silence.
Kaizer landed softly while Malek was forced to his knees, the young man gazing over the edge of the rooftop to glance at the dimly lit Al-Rafid with his hands behind his back. While Malek was breathing heavily as the silence bore down on him, glancing at Kaizer’s back, which was like a mountain before him, he felt his whole body begin to tremble as the fear of death enveloped him.
Finally, Kaizer broke the silence and spoke softly. "I will give you two choices. The first is to be squeezed into a human flesh rag with my telekinetic power and the second is to open your mind up for probing. The choice is yours."
Malek’s pupils constricted to needlepoints because the man did not pay attention to the choice itself, but rather what the meaning behind them was as well as what it indicated.
Overlord... was also a telepath??
No, it’s over...
Malek’s heart was filled with despair, now understanding why The Traveler, Dean of the Esper Academy, dared to raise this fellow to become the next strongest. With telekinesis for offense and defense, telesthesia for control and perception, as well as telepathy for submission and information gathering, this young man would be unstoppable!
Thinking of their ragtag group back at the manor, Malek realized why The Traveler would dare to send his precious student into a war zone to gain experience. Clearly, their group was not enough to threaten such a person if they utilized their power even slightly!
A plethora of thoughts rushed through Malek’s head, but then he realized if he was dealing with a telepath, then all these thoughts were no different from roaring out loud. As such, he simply decided to make the wisest choice, which was to submit.
He didn’t even have to say a word, Kaizer heard his submission loud and clear from his mind. The young man turned around and looked down upon the kneeling Malek with cold and inscrutable eyes, his hand gently pressing down atop the assassin’s head.
Kaizer did not have to forcefully break in since Malek cleverly opened his mind up for perusal, causing him little to no pain compared to if he had resisted and had been inevitably broken through.
After perusing his memories, Kaizer no longer needed to scout out their enemies’ situation because he got the most detailed report from Malek’s mind. He also understood how they were discovered and his expression became slightly more serious.
Among them was an esper who could ’pierce the veil,’ so to speak, akin to a seer. This seer had limitations on what he could see, and the stronger the esper, the less he could foresee their actions and choices.
So rather than focus on him or Rina, the seer simply focused on the slightly weaker trio behind them. Even then, rather than target them, he targeted the objects around them, like the combat suit they wore, which had lesser ’scrying’ protection compared to their bodies.
That was how he found out their location and gave it to their best assassin, who came here with a bellyful of grievances, not expecting to succeed at all. Contrary to Kaizer’s earlier thoughts, even if he did not deploy the barrier, this fellow would have fled immediately after killing Julia, sparing the rest of the squad.
Before ending his perusal, Kaizer hesitated and then placed a psychic mark within Malek’s mind, causing him to become just like Lyle, mentally under his control.
Malek felt the mark and his expression twitched, but he said nothing. For him, this was actually a fine outcome, because being tied to the future strongest, even as a slave, was better than being among the various dark espers who had no idea what kind of monster was growing up in their backyard.
Kaizer released Malek’s head and spoke coldly. "Return to whence you came and tell them you chickened out at the last minute because you noticed I put barriers up around my team. Whatever penance they make you pay, just do it for now and remain as a spy within their ranks."
"Yes, I hear and obey, Overlord." Malek responded respectfully, noticing that the telekinetic grip around him was gone, the fellow moving to kneel on one knee in subservience.
After Kaizer grunted in acknowledgment, Malek immediately melted into shadow and quickly left this area, rushing back to the manor with a heavy stone lifted from his heart. Malek was not angry, but slightly content, because he had switched teams and joined the winning group, which secured his survival for now.
In a way, he had to thank that fool who thought the world’s future was in his grasp for sending him out forcefully. Malek sneered, internally excited to see the expressions on the faces of his ’comrades’ when they were at the mercy of the mighty Overlord!
As for Kaizer who remained on the rooftop, he glanced upwards towards the bright moon, his cold expression fading into one of tiredness and slight depression.
He had almost paid a terrible price today, but it was for sure that the lesson learned was etched deep. He would never make this same mistake again, so the young man quickly returned to his bedding and placed a psychic barrier over the entire house, making sure it was foolproof before letting his consciousness drift off.
After all, implanting Malek on the other side was a new development that was not in the original plan, not to mention there was no guarantee that it would be actually useful. Kaizer also realized that he couldn’t afford to delay with an enemy like Azrael on the other side.
