Re-Overlord: I Can Acquire Anything!-Chapter 57: Hunting The Alpha
Chapter 57: Hunting The Alpha
The wind blew with an eerie stillness as Igaris stepped off the Skeletal Bridge, each of his footfalls echoing against bone and stone.
The graveyard spanned ahead like a battlefield carved by gods. It was desolate, yet brimming with dormant fury.
The hill-like mounds before him were massive, unnatural structures. Jagged and rough, they pulsed faintly with residual magic. The ground around them was scorched black, claw marks engraved into the earth, proof of violent past conflicts.
Atop those hills rested the nests.
Massive, fortified pits woven from scorched trees, stone debris, and old wyvern bones. Some glowed with molten heat, others with pale frost, but one in the center stood out—silent, dark, and surrounded by withered vegetation. It was the Alpha Nest.
Igaris narrowed his eyes.
Crackling fire lit up in the distance.
Several figures were locked in battle near the base of one of the outer hills. Likely human silhouettes struggling against the swooping form of a lesser wyvern. The beast’s scales shimmered dark green, wings tattered but fast. It dove, mouth ablaze, spewing a line of flame that incinerated the path below.
"Ooh, we have more fools as spectators," Evernight said behind him, her tone unbothered.
"Ignore them," Igaris replied flatly.
He advanced toward the to a different nest.
As he moved, the graveyard responded. Bones rattled beneath his feet. Red eyes blinked open in the shadows. Ghostly roars echoed from beneath the hills.
The Mountain King stepped protectively behind Igaris, and Malthius whispered a warning. "Master, Something powerful dwells nearby. I can sense it through my Earth perception."
"I want it," Igaris said.
"Fufufu... Then we’re going for the stronger one? This is going to be tough, though," Evernight said with a giggle.
Igaris glanced at her sweet, captivating face, unable to understand how someone so innocent-looking could be a demoness.
Despite her constant blabbering, he found her presence oddly pleasant. For a long time, he had been alone. But now, with her beside him, he felt a strange sense of hope.
Hope not just for revenge, but maybe even for a family.
For a long time he just wanted to live for revenge, but now he wished for a family as well.
But was he allowed this kind of bliss? He couldn’t help but doubt himself.
Evernight, on the other hand, noticed his lingering gaze but didn’t understand what was going through his mind.
She wasn’t aware that her master had fallen for her.
The idea that a human boy, thousands of years younger than her, could harbor feelings for her had never crossed her mind.
And how she would respond if she ever found out... only time would tell.
"Hey, look... some people are heading toward the Alpha Nest!" someone whispered from afar, watching Igaris’s group.
"Huh? You’re right. Are they mad?" another said, baffled.
"Tsk... let those fools seek their own death."
The murmurs of the distant onlookers faded into the wind as Igaris stepped closer to the Alpha Nest, the obsidian-scaled wyvern now fully emerged, wings half-unfurled like shadowy sails. But for a brief moment, he turned his gaze toward Evernight.
She stood beside him, arms behind her back, head tilted with a curious expression. Her violet eyes glowed gently in the moonlight, lips curled in a faint smile that never seemed malicious—just mischievous.
"Fufufu... This is going to be fun," she whispered again, eyes now fixed on the beast ahead, but she sensed his hesitation.
Igaris quickly averted his gaze, unsure why his heart had skipped. "She’s a demoness, an ancient one," he reminded himself. "She probably sees me as a child..."
Igaris turned his focus fully on the dark silhouette resting atop the tallest hill.
A guttural snarl echoed, low and guttural.
The Alpha Wyvern rose—longer than a house, its wings beating once to scatter loose boulders. Horns curved like ancient blades from its skull, and faint crimson patterns glowed beneath its obsidian scales like volcanic veins.
It had sensed a challenger.
Far below, the observers couldn’t look away.
"Wow! They’re actually doing it!"
"Aren’t there just four of them? Can they really subdue it? I heard it just hatched babies. It’s probably extra alert right now."
"Yeah, they’re definitely going to die!"
ROARRRR!
The wyvern’s thunderous roar shook the very air, sending vibrations across the canyon.
Igaris responded by stepping forward, unfazed.
His voice was calm and steady. "Evernight, Malthius, and you Mountain King, follow me. But don’t use your mountain form."
The Mountain King let out a grunt of acknowledgment and dropped to one knee in respect.
Evernight simply hummed, her smile unreadable, though her gaze remained locked on him.
"Gale Wings!"
Igaris leapt into the air, and then conjured a Rock Boulder and threw it on the shadowy silhouette of the wyvern.
And then—
BOOM!
The Alpha Wyvern struck the boulder with its tough tail, swatting it like a fly.
Next, its predatory eyes landed on Igaris as if provoked by the audacity.
"Woosh!"
It started descending from its nest with terrifying speed.
Its talons gleamed like obsidian swords.
More importantly, its mouth had begun to conjure a torrent of fire, ready to incinerate the challengers to ash. freewebnøvel.coɱ
"Swoooosh!"
But in that moment, a piercing rock-like bullet shot toward the Alpha Wyvern.
It was a surprise attack from the Mountain King.
However—
Crunch!
The Alpha Wyvern twisted its head mid-charge and bit down on the rock bullet with its razor-sharp teeth.
It was terrifying.
But it wasn’t over yet.
"Slash!"
Malthius came crashing down with his greatsword, leaping onto the wyvern like a Herculean warrior from legend.
"Screech!"
The wyvern shrieked in pain as a chunk of its right wing was cleanly severed. It lost balance and came crashing down onto the rocky terrain.
"Bang!"
The earth trembled as the massive creature slammed into the ground, brought to its knees in mere seconds.
And it was all because of one person’s flawless planning.
"You’re sharp, I admit. But even you didn’t see that coming, did you?" Igaris muttered coldly, his eyes fixed on the fallen beast.
Evernight stared, her heart skipping a beat for reasons she couldn’t quite understand.
"He’s making that face again... but why does that excite me so much?"
