RE: Perverted Sugar Daddy System-Chapter 247: No one
"The initial plan was that we would direct you from a distance so you could go in and retrieve the governor, but now it seems we both have to go in."
Driving the van into an alley, Betty and her team swept it clean of our presence, and then we fled the scene, moving on foot and heading closer to Isol Street.
I raised an eyebrow at the fact that Ninja Momma confidently expected me to get past a gathering of enemies, reach the governor, and then bring him to safety.
It sounded absurd, but then I was sure that woman was aware I was the one responsible for the deaths of Mike and Bettany.
"I work alone."
"Not this time," Betty confidently pushed.
"Despite the explosions, everyone in the area is still asleep. What do you know about that?" I commented, disengaging from Betty and looking at the dark windows around us.
Deciding to move through the alleys to avoid detection from above, we had a limited view of the main road, but a broad feel for the houses we passed.
"I'm just as surprised as you..." Bettany started, but I shook my head.
"Don't do that. You expect me to believe that you weren't aware those were witches back there?
If you're going to come with me, then you need to start sharing truths."
With us were Farak and Diego, and while I could place Farak's strength on the lower end, I decided to be unbiased about Diego and kept my mind open.
Though I had yet to see Betty in action, I didn't have any mind-blowing hopes for her either. Looking at the team I'd been sent with, I couldn't help but wonder if this whole thing was a sham.
I mean, surely there was no way these three were the best Ninja Momma could find to come save the governor.
Any single one of the men who had been with her back in London would tear through this team and the opponents ahead.
The only thing I could think of was that despite all my strengths, there was something more to Betty I couldn't pick up on.
"We are in a Grade 3 City-Wide Isolation Barrier," Betty started without much reluctance.
"As you must have guessed from the name, this barrier is used to cover wide regions, possibly even a city, if the right resources are supplied.
The functions a Grade 3 barrier can carry out vary, but this particular one—based on my observation, puts anyone not awakened to sleep and also jams communication.
It seems to focus solely on isolation. That explains why the governor has not been able to call outside for aid.
While trying to survey, I reckon the governor is also attempting to make contact with the outside world, but remember, that is something we don't want.
We need to rescue him before that happens."
With this show of faith, it didn't take Betty and me long to detach from Farak and Diego and begin jogging toward our target.
Anyone who saw the two of us at the moment would be confused, because while Betty had a utility belt that carried guns and knives, the woman even possibly wearing a bulletproof vest, I remained casually dressed.
It wasn't like the team hadn't offered me a kit.
The amount of space that had been taken over just for the silent capture of the governor was quite large, and it took us jogging past two streets to get close to the enemy ground forces.
"The building on the right, beside the white car. Third floor, the window facing us. There's a sniper there, his presence cloaked under an illusion and he's sweeping the area with his rifle.
Stuck to the wall on the right. He's spotted us, but he won't be able to see us clearly."
Betty asked no questions. Slowing her pace, she did as I said as we passed the first hurdle.
From here on, every step of the way had one or two soldiers hidden in buildings and scouting the area. Following my lead, Betty and I smoothly avoided them.
"How many men does Kyle have with him?"
"Six."
"You mean just six men are the reason for all this?"
"Six Black Elites. You were once a Black Elite, you should know how hard it is to kill someone like them."
I was once a Black Elite. I wanted to ask what a Black Elite was, but I was wary of exposing too much of my ignorance to Betty.
She sounded like she respected Black Elites, and I saw no reason to make her think less of me. That would only give her stupid ideas.
Heading closer to Isol Street, the sound of gunfire began reaching our ears, and we became more alert as we advanced.
"Seems they're still putting up strong resistance. How do we approach?"
Filled with old, dilapidated homes, some of them uninhabitable, Isol Street was a good place for such a scenario to unfold. But that wasn't the only reason.
"We'll go direct," I told Betty.
The sounds of gunfire came from a tall, seven-story building surrounded by lit streetlights and filled with rooms lit by electric bulbs.
Several windows were broken, and surprisingly, all the floors except the ground floor and those beneath it were empty.
I counted twenty-seven people in the building, and of those, twenty-one were against seven.
"Something's wrong here."
"Any particular reason why the governor chose to come here?
If he had gone to a more prominent residential area, he would've gotten help much faster."
"I've also been wondering the same thing. Perhaps he was coerced into coming here."
"No, he wasn't. And you're lying. All of you are lying," I muttered in my head.
Yes, Kyle Benedict was inside the building ahead of me, but there was no way his being there was a coincidence.
The man wasn't just seeking refuge in a room beneath the basement, he was in a bunker. And not just any bunker, but one shrouded in nature energy.
Betty said he had six men with him, and while I could identify six people being ganged up on inside the building, none of them were familiar.
Rather, within the bunker, along with the governor, I could spot three individuals who had been with him earlier this night when the cars in his convoy had erupted in explosions.
