Chapter 217 -206: Little Tail

The next day, Jiaxin arrived at school and Cui Zhihui handed her a portion of cart noodles, whispering, “This place makes really tasty cart noodles, give them a try.”

Jiaxin took them and noticed they were still warm. She scraped one third into her lunchbox and handed the rest back to Zhihui, “I just had breakfast, so I can’t finish this much. Let’s share!”

Zhihui grinned and replied, “Okay, let’s eat together.”

Jiaxin thought the girl looked very pretty when she smiled, and she let her thoughts out, “Zhihui, you look great when you smile. You should smile more often.”

Zhihui felt a little embarrassed but still nodded in agreement.

The cart noodles tasted delicious and after Jiaxin had finished, she gave a thumbs-up, “You really know how to pick. I’ve tried many, and the ones you bought are the best. Let’s go together on Sunday.”

In fact, due to her health, she hadn’t eaten at a street stall since arriving in Hong Kong. She said this to make Zhihui believe she often ate at street stalls too, aiming to bridge the gap between them.

Zhihui was delighted. At lunchtime, she followed Jiaxin to the cafeteria, bringing her own lunchbox, while Jiaxin got food from the cafeteria.

The cafeteria provided free soup, and Jiaxin got some for Zhihui, “From now on, you can eat in the cafeteria at noon. The soup will make it more nutritious.”

Zhihui felt like she was taking advantage and was a bit shy.

Jiaxin figured since it was free, it didn’t really count as taking advantage, although she understood that young people have strong pride. She said with a smile, “If you feel bad about it, when we start making money later, we can donate some to the school.”

Right now, Zhihui was still worried about tuition fees. Donating to the school was something she hadn’t even dreamed of. But seeing Jiaxin’s casual attitude made her nod, “I’ll work hard and, when I earn money later, I’ll give back to the school.”

As soon as she finished speaking, a boy nearby burst out laughing, “Give back to the school? You should take a good look at yourself in the mirror first.”

Jiaxin retorted, “This is our dream, and we will work towards it. What about you? You don’t even have a dream, not even as good as a salted fish.”

The boy wanted to mock further, but the one sitting next to him tugged at his arm and whispered something in his ear. Immediately, the boy took his meal and fled the cafeteria as if being chased by a dog. His friends didn’t run, though; they just changed seats.

Jiaxin smiled and said to Zhihui, “See, these people only bully the weak and fear the strong, so there’s no need to be afraid of them.”

Zhihui smiled in agreement.

Even though Senior Middle School 7 had exams the following year, they still got out at 3:50 in the afternoon. Because school let out early, Jiaxin had arranged for tutoring with her teachers on Mondays and Fridays, with classes starting once she got home. However, it was only two hours a day; she reviewed and did exercises on her own in the evenings.

When Jiaxin got home from school, she saw Su Heyuan sitting on the couch and greeted him with a smile, “When did you get here?”

Heyuan answered, “About half an hour ago. I’ve brought the fabric over; the tailor had some things to do today and will come over tomorrow morning. Do you want to take a look now?”

Jiaxin found her current house too cramped for making clothes conveniently, so she had rented another room in the same building for tailoring and storing larger items.

“Let’s go!”

Jiaxin was very satisfied with the fabric; it was the pea-green chiffon she had requested, “I’ve already prepared the pattern for the dress; the tailor just needs to follow it when she comes.”

“Ah, you’ve already prepared the pattern?”

Jiaxin replied, “I need to wear it on Sunday, so I definitely have to rush. The master tailor will work on it tomorrow, and I’ll check it when I get back from school. If there’s anything I’m not satisfied with, I’ll ask her to make changes.”

“Okay, I’ll let her know.”

Lu Jiaxin looked down at her watch, “The tutor has already arrived, I need to go back to class. I won’t keep you today, I’ll treat you to a meal next week.”

It’s important to balance work and rest, with Monday to Saturday devoted to intense studies, Sunday is for rest. This week Sunday was occupied, so next Sunday would be free.

Su Heyuan urged, “You should hurry to class, we can have a meal anytime.”

It wasn’t until Lu Jiaxin reached the door that he remembered something he hadn’t mentioned to her, “I spoke to Lawyer Guo about your situation, he said he wants to meet in person.”

Although he knew Lu Jiaxin’s background, the lawyer would definitely want to meet her in person before deciding whether to take on the business.

“Next Sunday when I treat you to a meal, please bring Lawyer Guo.”

Su Heyuan nodded and told her to hurry home for her class. After she left, he pondered and muttered to himself, “Should I also consider getting a degree to ‘gild’ myself?”

When he reached the age to attend school, the overall environment had been too prohibitive for him to attend, so it was Su Ya who taught him reading, writing, and arithmetic. Later, when Su Ya got married, she arranged for him to study with an elderly professor, which meant that despite his high level of education, he had no formal qualifications.

Su Heyuan was a man of action. When he got back to the Su family mansion, he talked to Old Master Su about this matter, seeking financial support for his goal.

But this time, Old Master Su didn’t agree, saying, “In Hong Kong, as long as you have money, that’s enough; qualifications aren’t important.”

Su Heyuan was free to go to university to ‘gild’ himself, but he would not receive financial support for it.

On Friday, as Lu Jiaxin left the school building, she was suddenly called out by a young woman. The girl was dressed in a rose-red slim-fitting long dress, with a beautiful face but a troubled expression between her brows.

Seeing Feng Lihua looking at her warily, the young woman hurriedly explained, “Don’t misunderstand; my name is Cui Meili, Cui Zhihui’s sister. I am here to express my gratitude to Classmate Lu.”

Worried that Feng Lihua wouldn’t believe her, she even took out her ID card from her bag.

Feng Lihua took the ID card and nodded at Lu Jiaxin. She had once taken Cui Zhihui home, and it was to the address on this card.

Lu Jiaxin didn’t invite her upstairs. It wasn’t because she looked down on her past as a streetwalker, but because her current boyfriend was involved with a gang, and she didn’t want any association with gang members.

Lu Jiaxin said, “Zhihui is my deskmate; I definitely wouldn’t stand by and watch her being bullied. Sister Zhihui, she really needs care, so try to give her more attention in your daily life.”

Ever since she had helped Cui Zhihui, the girl had been clingy to her at school, truly becoming her ‘tail’ wherever she went. Lu Jiaxin realized the girl not only lacked a sense of security but was also starved for love, so she let her be.

When Feng Lihua saw someone approaching, she said, “You two find a quiet place to talk!”

They moved to a secluded area where Cui Meili said, “Classmate Lu, it’s not that I don’t care for her, but she rejects me and won’t talk to me.”

At this, she became distressed, “She used to be lively and cheerful as a child, but after our family troubles, she became less talkative. She knows about my past and rejects me, refusing to talk to me, always walking with her head down. I’m really worried; I tried many methods, but nothing worked. These past few days, I’ve noticed she has started to smile again and no longer walks with her head always bowed.”

When she made inquiries, she learned the reason and felt very grateful to Lu Jiaxin, hence she came specifically today to say thanks.

Lu Jiaxin knew that Cui Zhihui had psychological issues and it happened that they had met; otherwise, the girl would’ve been ruined, “I will help her, but she also needs the care and love of her family.”

“Moreover, she isn’t rejecting you; she feels like she’s a burden to you. Have an open and honest talk with her, and the relationship will improve,” Lu Jiaxin advised.

Cui Meili was immensely grateful.
