Rebirth: Revenge of the abandoned heirress-Chapter 71: A setup
Chapter 71 - A setup
Just as the glass was about to touch her lips, it slipped from Amelia's hands, hit the floor, and smashed into pieces. Luckily, the place where they were standing was not crowded, and the music was still playing in the background, so no one noticed.
"I'm so sorry," Amelia stepped back with wide eyes.
Violet looked like she was about to cry. She had used up all the drug given by Caroline Anderson's manager and put it in that glass. With a face full of helplessness and despair, she walked away without even looking at Amelia. Under the desperation, she shed the mask of kindness.
"You could have just declined the drink."
"That would have been impolite." Amelia grinned and followed behind Violet. With an amused face, Jazmine Harrison also followed her out of the hall.
At a distance, Amelia caught up to Violet.
"Violet, you made the right decision," Amelia stopped her.
"Huh...?"
"I know they've been hard on you. But trust me, I'll never let Caroline's company hurt you. You've proven your worth to us — putting your safety aside for the sake of me and my company and going into their territory. Our company will never forget your sacrifice and will provide you with the best compensation." With sheer sincerity in her eyes, Amelia said those words and left Violet befuddled.
Her acting was top-notch. Violet, who was already at the brink of a nervous breakdown, could not possibly understand Amelia's intentions.
But standing at a distance, Jazmine understood everything.
Because not far from them was one of Caroline's company spies. He quickly conveyed those words to Caroline's manager. Caroline's manager went red with anger.
"Violet!" she roared, gathered a few men, and marched to catch Violet.
Violet was on her way to flee after realizing there was no way she could stop Amelia. Violet was paid well as Amelia's makeup artist. But when she saw Amelia rolling in money and enjoying such a famed status, she could not stop the envy from appearing in her heart. Over the years, this envy accumulated into deep hatred and resentment. So when Caroline had contacted her with such a glorious offer, her heart was filled with joy.
At first, she didn't want to betray Amelia. After all, Amelia had always treated her like a sister. But later, her greed won. So what if Amelia treated me well? She could never be in the same status as her. She was just a mere artist.
So she accepted.
First, they asked her to do small things. In fact, Amelia's scandal was also made possible with her help.
Later, they asked for bigger things. Violet was afraid that she might get caught, so she refused. But they started to blackmail her. So after increasing the amount of money for the dirty jobs, she started to provide inside information on Amelia.
"Fuck it. Open up!" With trembling fingers, Violet tried to open her car door. But just the next moment, she was surrounded by a group of men.
"Violet, I've to admit... I admire you," Caroline's manager sneered. "To be able to have fooled me for so long. So you've been with them all this time. But in the end, you made a mistake... You assumed you could keep fooling me forever. And the bigger mistake? Thinking that they could protect you from us."
"W-What..."
"Grab her."
A couple of men put a black cloth over her mouth and shoved her into a black van.
"W-Wait! Listen to me! I didn't know... W-Wait..."
She was reminded of Amelia's words that she couldn't understand at first. Now she understood.
She set me up... Violet clenched her fists. That bitch!
She was over.
Amelia walked back to Jazmine. Her best friend was evil.
"When did you know?" Amelia asked as they headed back into the hall.
"After you warned my manager, he ran an investigation. We had already been suspicious of her." Amelia looked a little sad, but it was quickly replaced with anger and determination. Amelia wasn't one to spare her enemies.
"She wasn't the only one they bought up. Thankfully, after your warning, my manager — he dealt with them all."
"You sound very proud of him."
"You must have mistaken. Why would I sound proud of that old man?" Though Amelia said that, there were sparks of admiration in her eyes.
When they re-entered the hall, the host was on stage, vehemently introducing the chief guest of the fashion show. Everyone was as quiet as an inanimate statue, and an overwhelming coldness dominated the surroundings. All the heads were turned toward the stage to get a glimpse of the rumored 'Devil' of Hong Kong.
Jazmine raised her head to look up at the stage.
