Reborn as the Last van Ambrose-Chapter 98: Huangyan vs Grim Van Ambrose
Chapter 98: Huangyan vs Grim Van Ambrose
"When mana fails, technique prevails."
The memory surfaced with crystal clarity — The mountain where he had trained for the last twelve years.
------------------------------------------------------------------
"Your mana is depleted, Grim," Cassius van Ambrose said, his weathered face stern but his eyes kind. "Yet your opponent remains at full strength. What will you do?"
Young Grim, barely fourteen, stood panting in the center of the training circle, practice sword hanging heavy in his hand. "Yield?"
His grandfather’s expression hardened. "An Ambrose never yields. Try again."
"Fight until I fall?"
"And guarantee defeat? No. Think, boy. When mana fails, what remains?"
Grim frowned, considering. "Technique?"
Cassius nodded, a slight smile appearing beneath his gray facial hair. "Precisely. Perfect technique requires minimal mana. Watch."
The old man took a practice blade and moved through a series of forms so flawlessly executed that they seemed effortless. "I’m using almost no mana," he explained. "Just enough to enhance my speed fractionally. The rest is pure technique—positioning, timing, efficiency of movement."
"But without mana, how can I generate enough power to defeat a stronger opponent?"
"You don’t need to overwhelm them," Cassius replied. "You need to outlast them. Force them to expend their energy while conserving your own or make them maske a mistake. Make them defeat themselves."
------------------------------------------------------------------
The memory faded as Huangyan closed the distance, her blade wreathed in golden flame. "Fire Heart: Dancing Embers," she announced, her technique evolving to its second phase. The golden glow around her blade intensified, fragmenting into what appeared to be dozens of tiny flames that trailed her sword’s path. A few landed on Grim, as they did he could feel the heat of the flames as smoke started coming off his wounds.
"Lost in thought, Lord Ambrose?" she asked, never slowing her attacks. "This isn’t the time for daydreaming."
Grim didn’t respond. Instead, he let his grandfather’s lesson sink in. Perfect technique. Minimal mana expenditure. Conservation of energy.
He stopped trying to match Huangyan’s power and speed directly. Instead, he focused on his movement, each parry and counter executed with precision. He used just enough mana to enhance his reflexes, abandoning flashy techniques in favor of fundamentals.
Huangyan noticed the change immediately. Her next sequence of attacks met resistance that, while not overwhelming, proved frustratingly difficult to break through. Her brow furrowed slightly in concentration.
In the stands, Chen Xing leaned forward, recognizing what Grim was attempting. "Back to the basics"
Lord Orvannis, seated nearby, overheard. "What do you mean?"
"Watch his movements," Chen Xing replied without taking his eyes off the match. "Perfect form. No wasted energy. It’s how the previous generation of House Ambrose fought when conserving mana for prolonged engagements."
On the arena floor, Grim had found his rhythm. Each of Huangyan’s strikes was met with the minimum necessary response, each counter designed not to overwhelm but to force her to expend more energy on her next attack.
For several minutes, they continued this dance, Huangyan attacking with increasing power, Grim defending with remarkable efficiency. The crowd, initially confused by the apparent stalemate, gradually began to appreciate the extraordinary display of swordsmanship they were witnessing.
"He’s making her work for every inch," Princess Liona remarked.
The Empress nodded thoughtfully. "Especially in his condition. Most impressive."
Across the arena, Julius Luminaris watched the bout. Max sat beside him, his wounds from his match with Grim still bandaged, his expression dark with resentment.
"He’s weakening," Julius observed quietly. "The technique is sound, but unsustainable."
Max nodded. "Huangyan will break through soon. No one can maintain that level of precision indefinitely."
In the center of the arena, Grim knew they were right. Despite his perfect execution, fatigue was building in his muscles. Each movement required increasingly conscious effort as his body approached its limits.
Huangyan sensed it too. "Fire Heart: Eternal Pyre," she announced, her blade now radiating intense heat that could be felt even several paces away. As she stomped her foot into the ground, the floor began to dhatter around her foot as Flames rose from the ground.
Another memory flashed through Grim’s mind.
------------------------------------------------------------------
"When facing a superior opponent," Cassius demonstrated, moving with surprising agility for his age, "don’t try to win all at once. Set small goals. Survive this exchange. Force them to make one more move than necessary. Create tiny inefficiencies in their technique that compound over time."
"And if that’s not enough?" young Grim asked.
Cassius smiled grimly. "Then you make them underestimate you. You show weakness where there is strength. You let them think victory is assured, then strike when their guard drops."
------------------------------------------------------------------
In the moment the ground began to shatter, Mist erupted from Grim’s blade.
"Celestial Mist: Drifting Steps," Grim whispered, infusing his movements with the barest minimum of mana.
The shift in tactics caught Huangyan by surprise. Her Eternal Pyre strikes, designed to overwhelm through sheer intensity, found themselves meeting empty air or glancing blows instead of Grim’s blade directly. Before she could adjust, Echo flashed in a simple cut that scored a thin line across her forearm.
A murmur of astonishment spread through the crowd. For the first time in the tournament, someone had landed a clean hit on Huangyan.
Her amber eyes widened briefly, then narrowed with newfound respect. "Impressive," she acknowledged. "But insufficient."
"Fire Heart: Phoenix’s Cage."
The evolution of her technique transformed the area around them into what appeared to be a dome of flickering flame. The tempature began to rise as the mist slowly vanished.
The air shimmered with heat as she launched her next attack—a combination of thrusts and slashes that seemed to come from every direction at once, as though the very air within the cage had become her weapon.
Grim knew he couldn’t defend against all of them. Even with perfect technique, the Phoenix’s Cage was designed to overwhelm any defense through sheer multiplicity of attacks.
He made his choice.
"Celestial Mist: Seven Sword Strike."
Committing his remaining mana to a single, desperate counter.
For a breathtaking instant, they stood frozen in the aftermath of their exchange, their blades locked against each other. The arena fell silent, witnesses the high level of display of swordsmanship.
Then reality reasserted itself. Grim’s legs buckled as his mana reserves hit zero. Echo clattered to the arena floor as he fell to one knee, physically unable to continue. Than passed out shortly after.
Huangyan remained standing, though blood now seeped from multiple small cuts on her arms and torso. She had weathered his final attack, but not unscathed.
The crowd erupted in thunderous applause. Not just for the victor, but for both competitors who had delivered the final match.
Huangyan sheathed her blade.
The Empress stood, signaling for silence. When the arena quieted, she addressed the champion.
"Lady Huangyan, you have proven yourself the finest warrior in this tournament. As promised, you may name your reward, and if it is within my power to grant, it shall be yours."
Huangyan knelt, head bowed. "Your Majesty, I ask for citizenship within the Celestis Empire, with all the rights and privileges thereof. I wish to be judged not by my heritage, but by my actions and loyalty."
Murmurs spread through the crowd.
The Empress considered briefly, then nodded. "Your skill and honor have earned you this right. From this day forward, you are a citizen of the Celestis Empire, equal under imperial law."
"Thank you, Your Majesty." Huangyan remained kneeling. "I have one more request, if I may."
